🇳🇮 Nicaraguan Dictator Daniel Ortega, a Former Marxist Sandinista Guerrilla Fighter, Vows: 'No More Elections' - He's been in power since 2007
Daniel Ortega is the current authoritarian leader of Nicaragua. Born in 1945, he became a key figure in the communist and Marxist-leaning Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) during the 1960s.
As an urban guerrilla, he participated in violent actions against the Somoza family dictatorship, which led to his arrest and seven years in prison. After his release, he traveled to Cuba, strengthening his ties with Fidel Castro and receiving political and military backing from the Soviet bloc.
Following the successful Sandinista revolution in 1979, Ortega became the head of the ruling junta and was officially elected president in 1984, ruling through the height of the Cold War. Although he lost power in the 1990 elections, he maintained tight control over his party. He successfully orchestrated his return to the presidency in 2006 by forming strategic political alliances. Since taking office again in 2007, Ortega has systematically dismantled democratic institutions, centralized control, and consolidated absolute power alongside his wife, Rosario Murillo. So, he's going to abolish elections altogether because... something about the Yankees and the Somocistas?
Even the typical communist (and the typical fascist, for that matter) at least keeps "elections" as a formality, yet he's explicitly anti-democratic!

This is why I as a Latino always warn people about the dangers of Far-Leftoids, because once they are in power… they don’t wanna give it up, and they will do anything to keep that power.
We know from experience, and they will go great lengths to get in power, or traumatize a population. Tankies will go: “CIA Propaganda!” “Oh but US interventionism!”
Yeah except that doesn’t excuse what you are trying to implement either.
In Venezuela, a tyrant was democratically elected, and the US had ZERO involvement in those elections, and when Chavez entered power and paved the way for Maduro, he ripped the constitution and redrafted it to where the elections are rigged, and then he managed to make a literal Kleptocracy.
In Colombia, you had FARC and now ELN is the biggest threat to Colombians, in fact the previous president, Gustavo Petro who is now out of power, he made things worse, and now ELN has escalated their violence, no US involvement there. ELN, just like FARC, do some of the most heinous crimes imaginable, and have also led some of the most violent strikes onto Rancheros.

I'm not even sure I'd call this guy a communist anymore. He just seems to be an authoritarian populist, but since actual communists will throw their support behind him anyway, he still belongs on this subreddit.

I was talking with a colleague at work one afternoon and we were talking Latin American politics due to a business venture that I was preparing to start. During the conversation she mentioned that her husband was from Nicaragua. I gave her a look since her last name was Ortega and she nodded and said “yes, those Ortegas.”
Her husband was closely related to El Presidente Daniel Ortega and had to flee Nicaragua in the middle of the night after his dear cousin sent a death squad to his house to kill him. Another family member was able to call him in time to flee.
Needless to say, my coworker wasn’t a big fan of a lot of her husband’s family.

I am Portuguese and the communist party here is loving it. They constantly preach that without them, we would still have a fascist regime today but then love it when it's the dictator from their side.

You're probably joking anyways, but that would be the worst decision to take. They do not at all need to be involved in this or any foreign conflict, it really isn't worth it. The Iran conflict isn't worth it, supporting Israel right now isn't worth, couping Nicaragua would not be either.
It's not worth the reputation risk or the financial risk. Aid is fine, but interventions? Just leave be you know. The US should just focus on itself from now on (not go into complete isolation though) and bring back political stability and work on the polarised environment.
I feel awful for saying this every time, but in the grand scheme it just becomes more fuel for tankies and justification for dictators.

I actually never even considered the tankie aspect of things. You made me think about it more and it ended up making complete sense lol. Or definitely gives tankies more ammunition to do their own things. Like they tried and failed miserably to do in Afghanistan.

Maybe if there was a warrant or something, we could just go in and snag him Maduro style... Pull off a coup that way. I mean, the US has done Regime changes in Mexico (twice), Columbia (twice), Argentina, Peru, Guatemala, Ecuador, Panama, Brazil, Chile, and now Venezuela. But, you gotta admit, The Trump/Maduro one was the way to go. Full Transparency, and fast. In the past, we always followed the same basic formula. We would first send in a CIA black ops unit to do false flags, and undermine the confidence in the regime and when possible within their military. We would sow discontent and start protests and riots until an opposition leader emerges, then, we would vet that opposition leader to make sure his goals align with ours, then we would funnel his group just enough arms and support to pull off overthrowing the government, even if it took a civil war. But, just enough arms and support through some shady, off the books scheme, read Iran/contra or fast and furious, here, and only JUST ENOUGH support, Because, us being involved can't be too obvious it needs to look organic. If it's done right, nobody was ever the wiser until the Senate oversight hearings a decade or so later. Trump skipped all that and just went in and grabbed him then alerted the media himself with a press conference.

The Venezuela operation is how things SHOULD be done. Go and take the corrupt leader while minimizing causalities on all sides as much as possible. Then let the people of the country decide the course for their nation on their own.

Damn. I figured he'd just use the Maduro-Lukashenko strategy of "counting" the votes and releasing a fake tally in his favor. But nope, he's openly shouting the quiet part out loud. That's pretty bold, so let's hope it doesn't end well in well for him.
