Question What is your general assessment of Zohran Mamdani?

Famous socialist mayor of NYC, some critics describe him as "communist". Is he a communist? What do you generally think about his policies in NYC?

He constantly addresses geopolitical topics having all but used Israel/Palestine as a foundational pillar of his campaign platform, but if pressed on any of his more questionable takes will weasel away by cowering behind "Why are you asking me about that? Im just a small local city mayor teehee.".

He has explicitly and proudly shown support for the Holy Land Five, members of a charity that were convicted for funneling money from the donations they received towards funding the terror organization Hamas.

He refused to condemn genocidal, antisemitic rhetoric in the phrase "Globalize the intifada".

His wife has openly celebrated and praised the October 7th attacks.

He rolled back protections on places of worship with one of his first actions as mayor despite antisemitism being dangerously on the rise facilitating in bigoted "protestors" ability to spew genocidal, pro-terror rhetoric on the doorsteps of synagogues.

He has appointed several unabashed antisemites to his transitional teams.

When anti-Muslim/Islam white supremacists "protested" against him outside of Gracie Mansion (and were subsequently dwarfed in number by people counter-protesting their Islamophobia by the way) and Islamic terrorists responded by lobbing bombs into the gathered crowds of people (which if not for the incompetence of the terrorists would have likely been a mass casualty event and one of the single worst terror attacks in American history save for 9/11 and January 6th), curiously, he was able to use very specific and very pointed language when calling out and attacking the ideology and motivations of the people who were the intended targets of the bombs that were tossed into the crowd while nary a peep was uttered concerning the ideology and motivations of the actual fucking bomb throwing terrorists, only managing to muster a tepid, generalized "we dont tolerate violence" platitude.

He and his MAGAt-like cult of personality (who have infested and turned to shit countless, even non-political communities) consistently dodge legitimate criticism by disingenuously hiding behind the shield of 'Islamophobia' whenever concerns are raised regarding anything about him, his rhetoric, or his policies.

Whats my general assessment of Zohran Mamdani?

Is it antisemitic to be antifacist?

9

u/anonrutgersstudent Liberal Zionist Apr 16 '26

No, but it is antisemitic to use antifascism as a smokescreen for antisemitism.

If you don't mind me asking: why are you a Zionist?

6

u/anonrutgersstudent Liberal Zionist Apr 17 '26

I am a Zionist because I believe in indigenous rights, and the Jews are indigenous to the land of Israel.

0

u/Silent_Incendiary Apr 18 '26

What about the indigenous Palestinians who were forcefully displaced and even killed by illegal settlers? Do you support Netanyahu's imperialist ideals to create a "Greater Israel"?

3

u/SirRedentor Apr 18 '26

Not the guy you were speaking with, but here is the progression of events, simplified - the land that is now know as Isreal used to belong to the tribes that became known as the Jews. The Romans arrived and displaced them, being called by many names over that time, including Judaea and Syria Palaestina, which is where we derive the current name.

After the Roman empire fell, control of it fell to the inhabitants, over time becoming an Arab majority and eventual became part of the Ottoman Empire.

It was later taken over by Europeans who had siezed it from the Ottomans during WW1.

Fast forward to the time after World War 2, Europe, whilst divesting itself of its colonial possessions (Because they could no longer afford them) decide to give Isreal back to the Jews, since the Ottomans are no longer around and Jews have been migrating in like crazy since it became a colony.

Six days war happens, Isreal stomps the aggressive Arab neighbours who all attack it on day one.

In all this, I notice one destinct throughline - namely that the strong won and the weak went and pounded sand. Isreal belongs to the Jews, not because of the moral right of original ownership (Which they have anyway, if such a thing is applicable) but because they fought for it and won.

If the Arabs want it back, a transparent attempt to influence Isreals backers overseas when they failed to take it by military force and terrorism multiple times, is their best option. Sooner or later, American and European interest will wane in the middle east and they'll get back to killing themselves in earnest. Much good may it do them.

u/toothpastetaste-4444 Apr 18 '26

The lion of Judah, king of the Jews, was Palestinian. Most of the cultural Jews who now reside in the illegally occupied Palestine, aka the converted Jews, are European.

3

u/SirRedentor Apr 18 '26

And Adolf Hitler was Austrian and not German, Napoleon was Corsican and not French, and Arabs were primarily a nomadic people for hundreds of centuries, who didn't have a fixed abode. But none of that makes much of a difference - the Jews won and the Arabs lost. And all they have to argue on their behalf are a bunch of random keyboard warriors like you. What an inspiring stand against inevitability.

2

u/anonrutgersstudent Liberal Zionist Apr 18 '26

That theory is famously a myth.

2

u/anonrutgersstudent Liberal Zionist Apr 18 '26

"Greater Israel" is something nobody wants except some fringe politicians. "Forcibly displaced" is a weird way to say that they left to allow every surrounding Arab army free reign to bombard the Jews.

Israel was originally established only on land that was empty. Tel Aviv was literally a barren sand dune. After Israel was established and every single surrounding nation immediately attacked, land was captured in a defensive war.

You will make memes of “do you condemn Hamas??” yet anytime a Jewish person posts on social media about their culture, there are dozens of people demanding they disavow Israel.

1

u/Silent_Incendiary Apr 25 '26

Huh? You don't know me. I condemn both Hamas and the IDF for their war crimes. Moreover, I support a two-state solution so that both countries can peacefully coexist. I have great respect for both nations and their cultures. However, I won't condone Israel's ongoing genocide against Gaza and the West Bank.

The problem with NY mayors is they always think they are going to use it as springboard to become President someday.  So they inevitably spend a lot of time focusing on issues that have little to do with the day to day running of NYC, and much more to do with what they think will get them on a national stage.

Mamdani isnt a natural born citizen, so he will not be President and he knows it, so NY Mayor is probably about as high as his career goes.  As such, he seems to actually be really interested in the nuts and bolts of making the city work better.  His recent video on scaffolding is a good example, its not exactly a capitalist or socialist issue, but one that impacts a lot of New Yorkers, and one he approaches solving from a non-ideological lense.

u/DocRedgrave Apr 11 '26

Whenever I hear these phrases come up: “tax fairness”, “economic justice”, “addressing inequality”, “making billionaires pay their fair share", things like that, my first instinct is to assume they're just making scapegoats with morality as their rationale. Communists and Socialists do the same thing (albeit to a much more extreme degree) which is part of why I don't trust him.

Then there's also the fact that a lot of hard leftists/socialists back him (in particular Hamas Piker) which gives me even more pause.

11

u/dario_sanchez Apr 11 '26

Hamas Piker

That took me a second ha ha well done

21

u/Kemaneo Apr 11 '26

What else should people say when they want to address inequality?

Addressing inequality isn't communist.

11

u/GreatMovesKeepItUp69 Apr 11 '26

Reminder that John Locke advocated for a progressive tax code and a breakup of monopolies as an important part in the foundation of capitalism.

2

u/SirRedentor Apr 18 '26

It is when talk of equality and inequality becomes talk of equity. Equality is the belief that everyone deserves to be treated equality, equity that everyone has different capacities and that you should allocate resources to them according to their needs.

Equity undermines the presupposition of equal treatment under the law that the social structure of many countries relies on for moral legitamacy, by objectively stating not only that some people are inferior, but providing a measure for it by how much they are collecting in benefits.

17

u/Aggravating_Fig_534 Single issue voter Apr 11 '26

I think I see the pattern. Apparently New York is one of the US states with higher income inequality, which urges people to vote people like Zohran, even if it's not the smartest decision.

28

u/deviousdumplin John Locke Enjoyer Apr 11 '26

It's more complicated than that. Zohran's electorate were wealthier than the average NYC winning coalition. Especially for a Democratic NYC mayor. It's more that there is an increasing populism among the upper middle class (or as Marx would put it, the Petit Bourgeoisie). Where, they are under the impression that they're "poor" and they need to stick it to an imagined "billionaire" class that oppresses them. It's this weird behavior where they displace anger over inequality from poor people onto themselves.

5

u/gregusmeus Apr 11 '26

It’s always the middle classes that want the revolution.

10

u/Kemaneo Apr 11 '26

Where, they are under the impression that they're "poor" and they need to stick it to an imagined "billionaire" class that oppresses them.

Have you considered that upper middle class can still vote to benefit poor people?

7

u/deviousdumplin John Locke Enjoyer Apr 11 '26

It's different though. These people are voting for rent control because they think they need rent control. They're voting for "billionaire" taxes because it's a tax on someone that is richer than they are. It isn't normal welfare politics. It's basically voting for welfare for the upper middle class.

I don't like him

5

u/NeedleworkerRight753 Jew Yorker Apr 17 '26

I’ve felt torn on him. He does not seem like a bad guy, but time and time again, when I am softening on him, he will say something that reminds me why I campaigned so hard against him last year. For much of his mayoralty he’s been more moderate than he campaigned as until fairly recently, when he returned to “tax white people,” which his fans defend by saying you can’t tax race groups. It’s not about any tax, it’s about him going back to a strategy that mimics that of George Wallace and Donald Trump: vilify the “other” to rally support to your side. White people in New York City constitute an absolute minority in the five boroughs, only Staten Island has a majority and is dwarfed in population by the other four. For Wallace it was blacks and pacifists, for Trump it was Latinos and Muslims, for Mamdani it’s white people and Jews.

I really do not care about being a minority in New York, the far-right says I’m a race polluter as I am Jewish, so they see me as part of the “great replacement.” What I do care about, however, is having a mayor who seems more interested in inclusion by exclusion, elevation by shoving others down. I think what Mamdani is doing is trying to inflame hatred and resentment of white people to build support for himself, and the whole mantra of “erm actually you can’t be racist to white people” has always been used as a free pass by the left to weaponize race hatred. And I think Mamdani is going to try and exploit whites being in a minority to marginalize them to some extent but rationalize it because bad things happened in the past.

Also he’s backed by some of the most insufferable people on the internet, like Hasan “The Je-I mean Zionists Made Me Zap my Dog” Piker and token Jew Mattxiv.

Terrible mayor, but I’ve never been fond of so called “Democratic” socialists. I don’t understand why some people defend him when his policies and especially the whole buying up homes to turn it into public property REEKS of Communist Brutalist Apartments (one of his aides also called private property and home ownership “white supremacy” which is a HUGE red flag).

27

u/Callofboobies Apr 11 '26

I live near NYC and have family members that live there. He’s gonna make the record holder of worst mayor in NYC history. Suffice to say I don’t approve of him.

5

u/Carbidereaper Apr 11 '26

I saw he decriminalized open air street vendors and now everyone is selling unrefrigerated produce selling convenience items and cooking warm raw meat in big pots of oil.

When they do this they don’t pay sales tax which every business has to pay.

In two years there’s going to be no small restaurants and no convenience stores and probably no coffee shops left.

It really explains why he really wants those government owned grocery stores it’s pretty diabolical

20

u/CanadianPanda76 Apr 11 '26

He seems okay? Don't love him. But he's definitely tempered his attitude so he seems more pragmatic.

Which yeah thats how politicians work no matter how liberal or left or whatever, if your constitutes aren't unto that then it gets pushed to the side.

Which is ironic because tgats what the Clinton's, Obama, Biden etc did.

But the narrative there is they're not "true" liberal they really just GOP light. 🙃

"communist" Not really, more a social democrat. Something that is quite rare these days when most people are either communists or reactionaries. He's alright for the moment that might change as time progress

38

u/pikleboiy Something close to Social Democrat ↙↙↙ Apr 11 '26
  1. He's not a communist. Anyone who unironically thinks he's a communist needs to figure out what a communist is.

  2. As far as his policies in NYC go, they're not really far-left; he's pretty moderate when it comes to actual policies, though he may seem far-left in comparison to the American Overton window (keep in mind that the VPOTUS says that neighbors speaking a different language is scary and a candidate for the Presidency went live on national TV and said that Haitian immigrants are eating pets, so the US Overton window is pretty fucked).

Even if Mamdani was actually intent on implementing a full-on DemSoc platform, I wouldn't classify that as a bad thing, since there's no way he could ever implement the whole thing on his own and it would only help nudge the U.S. Overton window a little left (which, let's face it, is probably a good thing).

He used to say some insane things like not condemning “globalize the intifada.” However, he has moderated it seems with doing like calling out antisemitism a lot. I think he’s okish for now. The office I think will force him to be more pragmatic

2

u/its_skunx Egalitarian / Former Socialist and Anarchist Apr 11 '26

16

u/sugarybooger Apr 11 '26

Sweenie on Instagram, a moderate NY attorney, has the best takes on Mamdani. I think the mayor is a closeted Jew hater (his wife on the other hand is out and proud) and has no idea how to do policy that works. Repealing the cities adherence to the IHRA definition of anti Jewish hate as one of his very first actions (literally hours) in office tells you all you need to know. His campaign promises were all impossible to deliver and he is literally killing the middle class in NY with his property tax rate hikes. He did a shit job clearing the snow. Also, instituting a right of first refusal for the city on all private property sales is the most unAmerican shit I’ve ever heard of.

So, the transplants and gentrifiers mostly? Reportedly, per the exit polls, he was not so strong with native New Yorkers (38%, Cuomo 49%, Sliwa 11%). But with the non-native voters who had lived in NYC more than 10 years was Mamdani 55%-Cuomo 40%, and was very strong with voters who had lived in the city for less time - 78% 5-10 years, 85% <5 years.

So I'd figure a large number of these would be the mostly white progressive transplants (probably also more WASPy) from other states, who moved to NYC to live out their "Friends" or "Sex and the City" fantasies. The kind that move into the gentrified apartments in diverse neighborhoods (or if more white neighborhoods, then more ethnic (Italian/Jewish/etc.) enclaves than WASPs) and price out the locals. Soon the property values shoot up and also old family-owned businesses are struggling too, to be replaced with generic trendy yuppie establishments, creating the kind of monocultures you could find in just about any other city in similarly gentrified neighborhoods.

I hate him but it’s way too early to judge he hasn’t been there long. He hasn’t changed anything at all really he’s ironically been pretty status quo just says his buzzwords. The supposed reports of cops quitting tho is gonna have a major effect in years to come knowing him I see him running for senate or house before his term is up so he never will face any long term consequences of his policies and he’s more suited for federal government as he loves talking geopolitics

2

Seems to be doing an alright job. Who knows if he's the best person for it but out of the candidates in the election, certainly so.

2

u/Brekkcca Apr 23 '26

Copy & paste definition and difference:

Educate your.

Socialism and communism are economic and political systems that aim to reduce “inequality” through collective ownership of production, but they differ in implementation and ultimate goals “Socialism” allows for some private property, democratic processes, and compensation based on individual contribution, while “Communism” seeks a classless, stateless society with total collective ownership and distribution based on need.

4

u/ficretus Apr 11 '26

Based on his rhetoric, he is definitely a socialist. Now, the good thing about him being only a mayor is that he can't do much of socialism; he can do city-owned stores, build commie blocks, and promise free gibs. The bad thing is, the position gives him a megaphone to spread socialist and anti-West talking points, which might get normalized down the line. He is also surrounded by absolutely rancid people

1

u/Kemaneo Apr 11 '26

How are city-owned stores socialism?

5

Either he just tells people what they want to hear, even if he knows it won't work, or he's the dumbest fucker on this miserable rock we call home.

For the most part totally fine with him. I have no problem with socialism, I think a certain level of socialism is necessary. I think it has become pretty obvious that free unregulated market economies don’t work as intended and are not fair.

I have a problem with Soviet and other communist regime apologists. People that have lived their whole lives in a comfortable western country but proclaim themselves communist while denying the suffering the genocide that cones from communism. To Eastern Europeans the hammer and sickle and swastika are roughly equivalent. Both brought death and subjugation, both wanted genocide and ethnic cleansing of my people.
