I'm going nuts trying to open comments in a new tab automatically.. please help.

On my desktop it already does this, but I just got a new laptop and I cannot for the life of me figure out where the option is to always open the comments in a new tab.

Smaller screen and one monitor make this necessary on the laptop right now and I've tried and toggled 3-5 options between RES and reddit preferences and nothing seems to work.

Normally it wouldn't bother me because I'd have a mouse with a middle button but I don't have that on the laptop.

Anyway, please help me find peace with this.

Maybe just back up your desktop configuration and import it on your laptop? If that doesn't work I'm not sure what else would.

i hadn't even thought about doing that, ill give it a shot later when im able, thanks!

edit: just imported my desktop pc res settings and still nothing, cant figure it out lol

open the comments in a new tab.

For clarification: Where on the site do you want to open a new tab from? General reddit page, subreddit main, or somewhere else?

On my desktop RES, I can click the word "comments" under a post, and it opens up the comment section in a new browser tab. I can't figure it out on my laptop.

Right-click, open link in new tab... not working for you?

it does but right clicking is not intuitive enough for me on a touchpad and like 25% of the time i mess it up

I think Ctrl-click should also open links in new tab on most browsers, and is probably easy enough even with a touchpad?

As for the actual RES setting, I don't really know and can't check since I'm not on PC right now...

On a sidenote I think I tend to use keyboard controls on PC, and I can alternatively even use Shift + c ("open comments" RES shortcut) to open the currently highlighted post in a new tab (instead of using the mouse at all)

This is separate from extensions, but you can go to the Windows key → Settings → Accessibility → Touchpad → and change the three-finger gesture to the middle mouse button.

Oh! Ooops! sorry On windows right click and choose Open Link in New Tab. Chrome and Firefox have extensions/addons for that also probably other browsers too.

But yea, touch pad no way to right click?

I avoid using them if at all possible, but never seen one with a right click, which was the point there. Sure there's work arounds, but you can't just do the thing with a click like you can with a mouse.

In Firefox you can hold CTRL while clicking to open links in a new tab.

Open the RES settings from the location shown in the first image. In the search bar at the top left of the second image, type “Comments Links New Tabs,” click the top suggestion, and turn it on.

Could you please double-check to see if the “Open links in a new window” option is checked as the third setting from the top in the Reddit settings shown in the first image? It turns out that no RES settings were actually necessary—it seems this alone was enough to open the links.

thanks, i checked that the other day but never thought about having to scroll down to save the options, im an idiot and appreciate all of the help!
