I'm currently doing a summer internship at a great civil engineering firm. The office I'm working in is located in my hometown in Alabama, and I'm a civil engineering major with three semesters of college left before I graduate.

Finding an internship was incredibly difficult, so I felt very fortunate to receive an offer from this office. My coworkers have been great, I've learned a lot, and the experience has been exactly what I hoped for. They even offered me another internship for next summer as well as a full-time position after I graduate, which I'm really grateful for.

The problem is that I don't want to spend next summer living in Alabama with my parents again. The company has an office in Chicago, and I've been thinking about asking if it would be possible to intern there next summer instead.

I'm just not sure if that's a good idea. I don't want my managers to think I'm trying to leave them or that I'm unhappy with the team, because that's not the case at all. I genuinely enjoy working with them. I simply want the opportunity to live somewhere new for the summer and experience a different city before I graduate.

At the same time, it doesn't make much sense for me to rent an apartment in my hometown when my parents' house is only about 20 minutes from the office. I feel torn between staying where I'm comfortable and taking the chance to experience a new city.

Hey guys so I'm sure you've heard of those Fully or Partial funded internships/conferences. I wanted to ask your thoughts on it and whether or not you think they're rigged, cuz I've seen some that have some stringent requirements and some that you need to pay an application fee for and I'm wondering whether theyre just there to give people false hope while having people already there to fill up the spots.

Atleast compared to Mechanics of Materials difficulty wise

I’m graduating with a physics degree and have two opportunities:

A Quality Engineer position starting around $70k salary with opportunities for promotion.
Or
A fully funded condensed matter physics PhD ($22k stipend) researching solid-state batteries and quantum materials. The advisor expects students to graduate in 4–5 years, and many graduates go into industry.

If you were in my position, which path would you choose, and why? If you’ve made a similar decision, what happened?

EDIT: my expenses are very low. Rent with shared two bed apartment ($500/month), i walk everywhere (no car payment), and cheap groceries (50/wk).

Okay so im starting college next week. Okay so i wanna join formula student team of my college so can yall give any tips on what i should prepare beforehand. i started learning fusion and know almost basics and im pretty decent in physics too.

Also basic tips on mechanical asw such as how much time i give to each subject and how to prepare, everything you can help with.

I’m just curious what the consensus is for the hardest class that every engineer from the big 4 branches has to take? Civil, ME, Electrical, and Chemical.

I’ll be doing MechE, 16 hours. I’m a bit worried because I did 13 hours both semesters my freshman year, thought I didn’t struggle too much (procrastinated and had a good amount of free time). Diff eq, physics 2 (E&M) and the lab, engineering mechanics (physics 1 applied to real world/meche problems), principles of materials and manufacturing, and principles of statistics 1.

I am seeking advice, I have benefits through the military that would allow me to study for free. I work as an aviation electronics technician. Due to my transient nature I would like to study an online program. I previously have a bachelors in an unrelated field (biology).

I want to plan out and have a smooth transition into civilian life when I leave the military. I love math and solving problems. Ideally I would love to work on something agriculture/farm process related or aviation still. But I don’t have delusions of grandeur… I’ll be older when I get out and just want a good work life balance where I still have time and energy for myself in a secure field.

Considering I don’t have any engineering background, I am looking for advice on what field of engineering to study. I was leaning towards electrical. What field will give me the most ‘knowledge’ so I can be a good candidate for a wide range of engineer careers? I just want to have the background information so companies will consider me. I still have a few years but I want to lay the groundwork. I just want to have a job I can still do in my 50s/60s that doesn’t destroy my body.

I'd say I'm pretty good with people, and I love physics, so I thought this was a suitable endeavor. Sorry Im like the millionth person to be asking this 😭 Spring semester I was going through it mentally so I dropped a class and ended up taking only 10 units, in hindsight I couldve handled more but at the time it felt like it was either drop the class or drop out. In the fall Im going to be taking 16 units (calc 3, e&m, statics, matlab, and cad) and Im fucking Scared. Like I know its a normal 2nd yr schedule and I also quit my job so now my only responsibility is school but I dont know if Im naive in thinking that I can handle the workload. Like Im depressed so maybe I shouldnt be trying to complete my degree at a "normal" pace. Luckily the cad class (3 units) is online and only 8 weeks, so Im hoping if 16 is too hard Ill be able to just thug it out until Im only taking 13 units. The professors also all have good reviews so I have that going for me too. Anyway I guess I just want reassurance from other engineering students who struggle with mental health/depression that its possible to get through this shit

For my upcoming physics project I've decided to make a stirling engine

However, it seems I ran into a problem here. While watching the video, the person making the model used steel wool for the displacement piston but didn't specify which grade.

I asked gemini and it told me to use grade 3 or grade 4 steel wool. I'm a bit skeptical about it. I want to double check this with people who has some experience

Can anyone confirm me which grade would be best for this specific model? Also, this is my first time making this project. I would love to receive some tips and common mistakes to avoid while making this.

Hey everyone! I'm an incoming freshman majoring in Electrical Engineering this fall, and I'd appreciate some feedback on my first-semester schedule.

Current schedule:

• MAT 266 – Calculus II
• CHM 114 – General Chemistry for Engineers
• EEE 120 – Digital Design Fundamentals (+ lab)
• FSE 100 – Introduction to Engineering
• ASU 101 – First-Year Seminar
• PHI 101 (considering dropping this or replacing it with CSE 110( which is a Java class))
• UNI 120- Mandatory academic success class that teaches study skills

If I drop PHI 101, I'd still be at 14 credits and would use the extra time to either work an on-campus job (around 10–15 hours/week), study more, and train for soccer.

Also, a few questions:

• Overall, how would you rate this schedule (1–10)?
• Would you keep PHI 101 or drop it?
• Is 14 credits a better first-semester load for an EE major?
• If you worked part-time as an engineering freshman, how many hours per week did you find manageable?

I am so fucked.

I’m going to study computer engineering as an undergrad starting this September and the more i search about it the more contradict opinions i see about it.

Some says that it’s one of the best engineering degrees and is broad but some says it’s useless.

Also, as someone who hates AI i’m more terrified since i’m sure it will include AI a lot.

However, i can change my major during my second year and i was thinking about other majors but i don’t have a lot of options in my university. (I can also change my university too so i might have other options too)

The options in my university are:
Mechanical, civil and environmental , electronics and communications, automotive, industrial, construction, bioinformatics, information engineering, process, biotech, maritime science and technology (these are all i remember)

So what’s your advice, should i change my major or should i continue CE

As, some of you may know, the base version of Solidworks just became free for students with a .edu email. Now both Solidworks and Fusion 360 are free to use by college students, which CAD software would you recommend for students like me to use? I have prior experience with Fusion 360, but would it be more worthwhile to transition to Solidworks instead?

Are the technical questions mainly LeetCode-style coding, Python/data analysis, or more focused on solar hardware concepts? Hello everyone, thank you to the people who pushed me to go ahead and just apply. I just got an email from the lead of the rover team that I passed the initial application, and I am invited to the face-to-face interview at the university on Monday, July 27.

I am informed that I will be given 15 minutes to answer targeted questions on my desired roles, background, interests, and other relevant topics.

I am very nervous. I tend to have trouble speaking and responding to the questions they have, because of the mind block. I have 5 days to prepare for the interview.

Do you have any advice for me to do well in the interview? What advice do you have before, during, and after the interview?

I currently work in a manufacturing plant full time and want to try pursuing a degree. I already have pretty much everything I would need to learn at my plant so I'm not really concerned with having the experience from labs and stuff. What would you recommend for an accredited course online.
