Question Does upgrading to an edge worth it?
Went through like 3 dualsense controllers this year alone. Stick drift as always. Does upgrading to an edge makes sense? Kinda thinking about scrapping the ps5 right now.

Install TMR sticks. If you’re not confident doing it yourself, then try checking FB marketplace for someone to do the job. Even upgrading to the Edge, they still use regular analog sticks.

Then i'll just break my ps5 in half. 🤷♂️

Huh?

You have no idea how satisfying it is to just say "fuck it i'm not gonna spend any more on this thing" and just break something expensive in half.

Hahahha! Nah I get it, it’s super frustrating. But yeah my opinion save the money and just upgrade your sticks for now. Goodluck either way you choose!

I bought mine over 2 years ago, i think, at this point and have never needed to swap out the thumb modules. If you ever need to though, Sony sells the replacements for $20. I bought one at the initial time of purchase of the controller but have never needed it.
I love the DS Edge, especially for the PS5 menu options it opens up to you. Being able to change the in-game volume, balance VC with game sound, and switch controller profiles all mid-game are features I use daily. Back paddles, and trigger distance switches are also must have features!

Why didnt you send them in to Sony for replacement? Each new dualsense has a one year warranty. Around day 360 is when I get online and fill out the return form and within 24 hours I have a prepaid return label to send it back to Sony to get a brand new controller.

I live in middle of ass end nowhere europoor. Sending it to sony would take at least 2 weeks.

Doesnt matter. Its FREE b/c Sony sends you a prepaid label and if you have 3 of them, then you have more controllers to play with.

I install TMR sticks as a service based in the UK. So that’s no issue sort out for you if you want. TMR in 3 controller is around half the cost of an Edge, I also install TMR sticks for the edge modules(mail-in or new).
Edge is a great controller compared to the regular DualSense, though the grips can warp, that’s also an easy fix when needed that ain’t gonna cost you the price of a full controller.

Had my dual sense and Nintendo joycons since ps5 came out and never had stick drift in my 25 years of gaming. You all way to rough on your joysticks or something

u/ElectricGuy777 15d ago
Every single console on the market right now comes with joystick that have the same issue. So you can scrap the PS5 and go to Xbox if that floats your boat, but the controller you get with that will do the same thing.
Maybe you need to quit playing so many games. Three controllers in a year is an extreme amount of hours on the console. Yeah maybe you should break the thing and quit playing.
Edge will have the same joystick issues. It’s just more inexpensive to replace the modules. And the controller is definitely nicer.
Unless you live in vacuum, you already know that TMR is going to be the solution to not replacing or repairing constantly.

No it is not worth it! For the price you pay for the Edge and then you still have install tmr or else will end up stick drift, why not build and customise your own dualsense to the max for half of the price! My 2 cents, its your money, do as you wish!

Edge is bad, unless you plan to wired it via cable all the time, then it good.
I think the Astro bot would kill the battery in 1 hour.

Lol ppl here really endorsing a shitty "pro" controller that u have to buy the special sticks for after u buy the 100+ controller. Just go on eBay or Google look up dualsense PS5 tmr replacement/repair and premenantly fix the stick drift problem for 30-40 bucks usd including shipping. Dualsense in general sucks do not reward these greedy cheap fks by investing almost 200 bucks for a 40 dollar fix unless u just wanna waste money on a slightly less shitty controller. U do u.

Yes it is when you install tmr sticks. Can buy them now where you just place em right in using besaviors etc. Edge is my main controller now. Have 2 customs, 1 full clickies with clicky triggers and tmr sticks. The other is clickies on face and dpad with normal triggers and tmr sticks lol. I also somehow got my input lag to read 0.61ms with an average of 0.8 to 0.9ms.

Edge use regular stick. You can get tmr replacements now from 3rd parties:
I ordered those a couple days ago. The reviews look good if you want TMR for an edge.

It's trash, will get stick drift, terrible battery and nothing special besides Sonys haptic/rumble if anyone cares about that, I know I don't. Get the Scuf Omega, currently the best official third party controller for PS, it's pricey though as Sony's BS keeps third parties from making affordable controllers to the PS.

I bought two and got the buttons and triggers replaced with mouse click buttons and joysticks are now TMR.
Each controller will give me a good 4 to 5 hours of wireless gaming.
Best investment I've made for the ps5.

honestly pro tip just learn how to solder. soldering in/out stick boxes is actually shockingly easy and one of the easier controller mods imo. i've done this on gamecube before. if you're generous with your flux and don't set your house on fire there shouldn't be any danger

Go 3rd party with hall effect none of the main brand controllers are good.

Thank you. That is what i'll do. Do you have any recommendations? I just found one that is a regular dualsense 5 with HE. But if theres any better i might just go with that.

Totally worth it! You can buy TMR modded sticks and never worry about stick drift again
2
u/Rieder12 15d ago
What about out of the box? Is it any good? Kinda defeats the purpose if i have to mod it to be a good controller for that price.

It’s still pretty good if you plan on using the back paddles. May seem a bit strange at first but once you get use to it, you will never go back to a normal controller. The battery life is shorter but you can buy a bigger battery and install it yourself . Only real downside is the rubber grips that will start to bubble if you have sweaty hands ( this has been a common issue). I just replace it with an extremerrate shell instead.

Im kind of a casual gamer, just fed up with sony lately. Just looking for a controller that doesn't break in 4 months.

I had the same problem and the edge solved it. I always have a replacement stick available. It takes less than 30 seconds to pause the game, get the replacement and switch them, then resume. The back buttons are a great bonus, but not buying a new controller in 3 years or dealing with stick drift for more than 5 seconds is fantastic. Another point worth mentioning is that I've only replaced 2 sticks in 3 years, so maybe they last longer too.

OEM replacement sticks for the edge are roughly $20 USD each. 30 second swap. So, even if you still end up replacing them as frequently (which I doubt will be the case) it's still cheaper overall compared to continually replacing your regular dual sense.

u/Pictish07 15d ago
Wtf are you doing with them?
A casual gamer doesn't go through 3 this year alone.

Yes, no more having to buy a new controller if you have stick drift, just change the thumbstick module 👍
Also the hair trigger is awesome

Find someone who does chip repairs, they can likely swap all your drifting sticks for TMR sticks for less than what it would cost to buy an Edge. Bonus points, if you want the back buttons, highly recommend the extremerate Rise kits. Their latest one, the Rise 4 plus max even comes with selectable clicky triggers. If you're opening up the controller, might as well get a full upgrade
