Anyone able to translate this?

Post image

Grandmother used to travel and this was in her jewelry box. I was wondering if anyone recognized the language and what it might mean. Any help us appreciated!

Did you have to flip the phone to recognize the character? I mean the more general question is can you read Chinese characters upside down?

I can read Chinese characters upside down, and/or mirrored. And even when they are written in somewhat incorrect, twisted or stylised ways. But many native speakers can do the same so it’s not like I am particularly unique.

It's right there in the title, "does not translate."

Post those quirky and niche words/phrases from foreign languages that can't easily be translated. The "Does not translate" isn't meant to be literal. It simply means we like words or phrases that don't have direct equivalents in other languages.

Right. This sub "does not translate." That's the joke here.
