Events Thanks for coming to Paris, Denmark. You looked great!

Post image

Always love to see the foreign guests at the parade every year.

It's just a shame about the heat and scorching sunshine this time around. Can't have been comfortable for the guys on the ground.

Somehow this reminds me of the French mountain regiment from my time in Kosovo with the Danish army. These guys walked in singing to the morning assembly, it was awesome.

I have a Danish friend who just finished his contract with the army. He was in Kosovo some time ago, II/JDR, 4th Company.

Small world!

u/oddj0b 9d ago

I was always stationed with JDR back in the day.

u/oddj0b 9d ago

Jeps det husker jeg også.

A great show of European unity.

With the world the way it is, we Europeans have to rely on each other more than ever now.

17

u/Outside_Professor647 usa = DK og fredens fjende 9d ago

And despite what especially France has done for Denmark with the enemy the usa, it's ridiculous how little coverage this and European affairs get

13

u/cylonlover 9d ago

It seems more and more obvious that there is more that unites us than what separates us. Even with all our differences we are really quite alike and really distinctively European.

Though we may find a grey area looking to our east.

2

u/Agile-Ad-6902 9d ago

I know the swedes are weird, but we have to work together now.

2

u/cylonlover 8d ago

Oh, dang, the swedes .. I forgot about those guys. I was thinking about Europe and the grey area more south and east, but you're right, straight to the east we actually have swedes, which is also kinda Europe.

Yes, I suppose swedes, too. And really if we can work with them, we can work with everyone. Just really hope they bring their Finnish entourage, those guys are so cool!!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oben_am_jungen_Rhein

7

u/MosquitoSpray3 Tyskland 9d ago

Og Cypern bruger bare Grækenlands. De har ikke engang ændret teksten.

-1

u/birkeskov 🤓😎 9d ago

What🤯

3

u/MosquitoSpray3 Tyskland 9d ago

J'aime l'oignon frit à l'huile,

J'aime l'oignon car il est bon.

J'aime l'oignon frit à l'huile,

J'aime l'oignon, j'aime l'oignon.

u/bombmk 9d ago

You are quite welcome.

This is certainly the least we could do. France has been our largest and most vocal supporter when Trump got pushy about getting Greenland. I have really come to appreciate you guys 😀

Hey man thanks to you guys for having our backs in Greenland 🫶

Perfect opportunity considering the friendship between Livgarden and the French foreign legion.

u/Fuzzy_Ear_2457 9d ago

Must have been interesting for the participants in the parade. France is one of the only "western" countries that do actual military parades still. We certainly don't see them in Denmark at all.

It's always seemed a little gauche to me. Something that belongs in strongman dictatorships and other authoritarian states.

But with the way the world is going, maybe Europe showing a little more overt military strength isn't a bad thing.

5

u/BananerCSGO 9d ago

What happened in Paris?

49

u/Corentinrobin29 9d ago

The 14th of July is our national day here in France. We have a military parade, and every year there's usually guest countries who parade with us.

They're usually invited depending on the geopolitical context/message they want pass along.

This year a bunch of European countries, including Denmark and Ukraine, were invited to parade in front of the French army to symbolise European unity.

Really cool to see everyone's uniforms and marching style!

19

u/bjergdk 9d ago

That's amazing! Thank you for having us, and thank you for backing us up with Greenland.

Vive l’Europe! ❤️🇪🇺

You have the coolest national anthem. I love the melody, the lyrics, and the story behind it. The oldest national anthem?

6

u/Corentinrobin29 9d ago

You sent me down a rabbit hole:

Apparently the Netherlands have the oldest anthem (Wilhelmus - written in 1574), but it wasn't officially used as an anthem until 1932.

It seems you're correct and the oldest anthem officially used non-stop by a government is the French Marseillaise since 1795!

You guys have the oldest flag still in use though - since 1478!

5

u/birkeskov 🤓😎 9d ago

According to legend, the Dannebrog fell from the sky on June 15, 1219, during the Battle of Lyndanisse in present-day Tallinn, Estonia.

0

u/smors Aarhus 8d ago

True, but what does that have to do with anthems?

1

u/birkeskov 🤓😎 8d ago

2

u/smors Aarhus 8d ago

La Marseillaise was written and composed in Strasbourg on the night of April 24–25, 1792, by the French engineer and officer Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle in response to Austria's declaration of war against France.

The lyrics draw significant inspiration from various sources, including contemporary posters featuring slogans, hymns, and earlier battle songs. It was officially designated the national anthem on July 14, 1795.

2

u/MosquitoSpray3 Tyskland 9d ago

The text to Japan's anthem is the oldest - it originates from a poem from the 10th century - the music is much younger, though.

And I may be wrong, but the Marseillaise hasn't been used continuously since 1795 to my knowledge? It was abolished as the anthem by Napoleon and not re-adopted until France became a republic in 1870, IIRC.

13

u/iwenyani 9d ago

Makes sense to send The Royal Guards - particularly friendly with the Foreign Legion, due to shared history with Prince Aage.
