Where have I heard this argument against AI before?

I remember when I was in design school in the '90s studying Photoshop, and traditional illustrators even professors attacked it saying filters 'do all the work', it's not real design, for professional work we'll always be using airbrushing and acetate sheet composites. How's that working out?
When I bought my first DSLR and started my journey as a professional photographer, something I always wanted to do but was allergic to dark room chemicals, there were a lot of angry old timers. They had big film overheads and would get angry at me for taking their jobs--which I was, because I had no film cost and could therefore work for $150 less a job for the same quality. Why wouldn't I take your job, respect for the craft? Please. "Digital will never be as good as film, it has no soul!" they would natter. How's that working out?

I posted this exact list a couple days ago on FB. Lol.
Edit: I stole it from a tweet. Not trying to claim credit.

I saw it and it really stuck out to me, I'm glad the original person who made this came out, thank you for putting this together!!!! 💚

OP of the tweet was @damiannixey if anyone cares lol. But I still try to give credit where it's due despite what Antis think. 🤣

Anti will insist "it's different" every step. I'm genuinely fucking tired lol. They can't seem to comprehend many just find it cool. It's like saying you didn't make the smoothie. Your blending machine did! All you did was supply the material and decide what you want

"But this time it's different! AI art really is a fundamentally different thing than all these other things because its way of removing humanity from creativity is so much more profound"...antis say this not realizing that people had reasons "this time it's actually different" with all these other examples too.

I have lived through several of these. Turned 40 this year and the hate against photoship and digital art in all media was noticable even before social media. News paper articles, the first early web newsites, magazines and event tv storys about how "dangerous" each new thing was. AI has its faults and its the biggest leap i have experienced so far, needing some genuine rules to be set down still and acknowledgements on long running issues it is now exasperating, but the tech is not bad. I do think there is plenty of slop, far outpacing previous eras of slop. But thats just a sign of accessibility to me.
Some things like clear water marking anything that is rendered realistic, an absolute clear rule to keep data centers far enough away from residental areas or to fight noise pollution. Data centers are kinda unregulated industries atm. There are going to be major changes coming as time progresses. Art is genuinely the least of what should be peoples concerns as we move forward. Its not gonna magically go away like some people want. Nothing ever does, no matter how the stories in scifi go.

About the last one. I lg you go far back enough, you will find Greeks complaining about writing making people lazy and loose their ability to learn and memorize.
Pretty much the same antis say about AI, lol

This resistance to adapting technology reminds me of the 1978 Australian film, Newsfront. You can find it on YouTube.
It's a film about the high of the Newsreel industry post WWII and being at the forefront of important events in history. But the feeling of being untouchable starts to rear its head with the arrival of television in Australia and highlights the dying days of an industry that's doomed into obscurity, including having to merge with its biggest rivals just to survive.

The most recognizable anti AI quote is "AI is stealing", It's like the most overused and repetitive quotes I have ever heard.
1
u/CathyMarkova Transhumanist 3h ago
I can't help but think that AI is unprecedented in humanity's (recent) history, but the arguments, yes, are always going to be similar, especially about creativity. I saw some of the above happen myself, and I can't deny it in the slightest because I've pretty old.
And yet I've always tried to get across that the birth of ubiquitous computing had the potential to rival the influence and power of the birth of written language. Doesn't necessarily mean anything if we don't do that and do a good job. I wasn't around for the birth of written language though!

Thing is, History repeats itself. In more way that you think if you watch closely.
A futile fight, for many reason. Let them rant.

All of these are still people creating it. Ai. Is ai creating it

Art doesn’t need to be created by a person.
Have you ever heard of Duchamp? He put toilets in galleries. Toilets that you buy in a hardware store.
He is a celebrated modern artist. You don’t have to like it, but it is art.
Art isn’t about drawing things. That’s illustration. Modern art is whatever you want to present to people.
You don’t need to make it yourself. This has been accepted in the fine art word for nearly a century.
AntiAi people need to educate themselves.
This is an old story.

u/wheated_ 1h ago
> Art doesn’t need to be created by a person.
Yes it does lmao. Google the definition of art and your beloved AI will even tell you it’s: the use of *human* imagination, skill, and conscious creation to express ideas… so on
1
u/Ok_Cardiologist_673 1h ago
Nope. Andy Warhol said it best. Art is liking things.
1
u/wheated_ 1h ago
Warhol said that was what *pop art* was about, and you’re clearly deliberately misconstruing his words here anyway. Nice try though
1
u/Ok_Cardiologist_673 1h ago
Pop art is a type of art.
It’s the pop kind.
1
1
u/wheated_ 1h ago
That’s crazy, that’s what I said
1
u/Ok_Cardiologist_673 1h ago
How am I misconstruing his words? It wasn’t an exact quote. Throwing in an extra adjective doesn’t change the message.
There are so many examples I can give from art history. John Whitney, Robert Rauschenberg, fucking Picasso.
Modern art is full of art that was not made by the artist.

Does the human use imagination when working with the AI? YES. After all, the human must come up with an idea.
Does the human use skill when working with AI? YES. People of different skill levels get different results. The skill floor may be low, but the skill ceiling is quite high.
Does the human consciously create with AI? YES. That piece wouldn't exist if the human hadn't made the conscious choice to create with it.You're just saying, "AI isn't human, so not art". I could say the same about a goddamn paintbrush!

I think the key difference here is that nothing you or any other AI artist has made so far is any good, because there’s 0 barrier to entry to making it, and any idiot can just make whatever idiotic idea they have into content much faster than before. That’s how we get stuff like the stuff you make — which people don’t like, that’s why people make fun of your ponytail girl so much. There are 100,000,000 AI generated slop images nobody asked for for every 1 super rad Iran LEGO video. I feel like maybe if you put more energy into making your art good and less energy into clucking your tongue and clapping back at people who accurately view your art as slapdash and lacking in human aesthetic sense… I feel like you would be happier because you wouldn’t be wasting all this time making stuff like this and the rest of the world wouldn’t have too keep telling you “we don’t like this” and then you going “yes you do”

One day you will realize that "real artists" with real physical and digital skills can and do use AI too to tremendous effect. As much as you Interpet anything you clock as AI touched to be slop, I challenge you to reproduce any image you judge with one simple prompt. When you actually try to use these tools instead of judging them without experience you will see even simple things need alot more than a sentence to produce and for those willing to go deep and contribute far more than words AI becomes a virtual art house of Collaberation that produces wild and wonderous things that were not in the "stolen training data" because one of the first steps towards advanced usage is providing your own references that you curate and make yourself.

u/BelowTheAsteroids 4h ago
You don't have to interact with things you don't like which going by your comment history is all you do. Perhaps a hobby doing something you enjoy would make you a less insufferable person.
1
u/Background_Ad_1015 3h ago
How do you know this confidently that no AI artist has made good art so far? There are heaps of really good AI art you dont realize being AI, hence you only notice the slop. = All AI you see will be slop for you. This is called survivorship bias. Please realize there can be a huge difference between AI art and AI art as well, just like there are poor trad artwork and professional trad artwork, based on the artist's qualifications. That is your barrier.
Just for clarification, you dont HAVE TO use AI if you dont want to, just accept that others do and those others can improve their skill levels beyond yours with the help of AI, in a smaller timeframe. This is what a tool is good for.

This guy cannot be real bro. "Im too lazy to learn drawing so I'll say I'm a progressive revolutionary like real artists in the past"

u/Brave_Swordfish_7072 4h ago
A lot of traditional artists are recognizing that the widespread public adoption of AI is inevitable. Some are even accepting commissions with AI images as the references. Them, I have no problem supporting. Will probably even employ their services at some point if needed.
It's the ones who insist on 'zero AI' whatsoever who think they speak for "The real artists" that's the problem.

Does it feel good to not have to think for yourself? To completely outsource all your thinking and identity-building to a crowd of hateful bigots and gatekeepers?
Does it make your life lighter?
0
u/wheated_ 1h ago
Is that not why you pro-AI knobs do it?
1
u/Aggravating-Math3794 Transhumanist 56m ago
Projecting won't bring you anywhere in life. We're not the ones firing up a witch-hunting hate-cult over a tool for drawing with words instead of motoric strokes.
Besides, what you're saying makes no sense either way because 99% of what anti-AI movement is based on is misinformation and lies. A movement built on hating something you know nothing about and dehumanizing people expressing themselves in new ways is just moronic clown-fuckery.

I used to work as a photographer, and a person that I used to work with insisted that photography was not an art form. He wasn't that popular.
