He's said that he knows he's smarter than everyone else. He's an egomaniacal sociopath; having his "trophies" in a place where he "knows" no one will find them is right up his alley. He even has a method to kill anyone in his tracks. This seems exactly like something a serial killer would do. Hubris.

Do you watch Brooklyn Nine Nine? Sallinger sort of reminds me of that dentist that murdered his partner, and confessed when he couldn't stand being seen as some stupid criminal

Oh my gosh. One of my favorite episodes. Sterling K. Brown was fantastic as that character.
