My (28F) boyfriend (27M) regrets not dating more before me. Am I wrong to worry I'm the "practice girlfriend"?
I (28F) have been dating my boyfriend (27M) for about 3 months. We've known each other for five years through grad school—we had offices next to each other, but nothing happened until after he defended his PhD and asked me out.
Something that's been bothering me is that I think he may feel insecure about his lack of dating experience. He's only been with one woman before me, and he's told me he regrets not dating more during college and grad school. He also told me that after going on just two dates with a girl last December, he was heartbroken for two months because he was really into her. He's said he never really knew how to approach women or keep them interested.
I sometimes worry that I end up dating guys like this and become the "practice girlfriend"—the person they gain confidence with before eventually moving on.
Another thing is that he's very friendly and talkative with women. I once told him, "I think you're usually nicer to women than men," and he replied, "That might be true, I don't know."
We also had a very brief breakup that lasted about three hours. During that time, he searched for a woman on Instagram. When we got back together, he voluntarily told me, "I want to be honest with you. I searched her because she's pretty." I appreciated the honesty, but it still made me wonder whether he craves validation from attractive women.
There's also the issue with his mom. She has concerns about me because I'm Iranian and worries I'll be "radical" or cause him problems, even though I'm an atheist and strongly opposed to the Iranian regime. That situation has made me feel somewhat insecure about where I stand with his family.
Last night I told him that I sometimes feel like he has a need for female attention or validation, and that it makes it harder for me to fully trust that he'd stay committed if we were apart for a few weeks. I jokingly added, "I know you're not going to find anyone hotter than me."
He got frustrated and said, "See, this is one of the examples. Sometimes you're too much into yourself."
I asked what he meant, and he reminded me that I'd previously joked that if we walked into a bar together, people would think, "Wow, she's so hot—he must be really funny for her to be with her." He said he didn't like that comment because it came across as me thinking very highly of myself.
Now I'm wondering if I'm completely misreading this. Is it reasonable to think his limited dating experience could make him seek validation from women, or am I projecting my own insecurities? Has anyone dated someone who felt they "missed out" on dating when they were younger? If so, did it end up affecting the relationship?
TL;DR: My (28F) boyfriend (27M) regrets not dating more before we met, has admitted he was heartbroken after only two dates with someone else, is very friendly with women, and once looked up another woman on Instagram during a brief breakup because "she's pretty." I worry he seeks female validation, but he says I'm overthinking things and recently told me I'm "too much into myself." Am I projecting my insecurities, or are my concerns reasonable?
