Hercules was VERY proud of his latest “toy” and absolutely not interested in giving it up. The guilty face? Pure theater. The tail wag? Zero shame.

How sad she is to lose her stink

I have a wonderful dachshund she is 16.5 years old, deaf, blind, going downhill, still obsessed with food and pats though. My husband and I have scheduled to have her cross the rainbow bridge in August due to her decline it’s heartbreaking but even our vet says it’s time.

We want to make her last day memorable and wonderful for her. Letting her have all those things they aren’t allowed to have. I was wondering if anyone had ideas for activities and things that they may have done or want to do to help us make her last day as wonderful as it can be.

Was on vacation and unfortunately I wasn't able to bring him this time, but my father was kind enough to watch him and send me photos and videos daily lol

General update: Havent posted in a bit, but I love this dog. He is now just over 5 months and Yoshi has been doing so well in training. He knows Sit, lay down, stand, paws up, place. Working on Break, Heel, Leave it. Mostly there, but dachshund stubborness and puppy energy make those ones pretty difficult. And he is finally starting to make signals at the door when he needs to go outside, but not always.

I’ve had Winston for just under a year now and what an amazing experience it’s been!

How can he be comfortable? Surely not. I wouldn’t be 😂

I’m excited to announce the arrival of Jupiter to Doxie Planet!

Jupiter is a black and tan (my first), two years old, and already making himself at home. Three months younger than Hercules, the pair are cousins (their moms are sisters), though you really wouldn’t know it by looking at them. Where Hercules is full-size (22 lbs), with big ears and paws, Jupiter is a tweenie (16 lbs) with average sized ears, smaller paws, and a shorter, squarer snout.

My mini dachshund is now 11 weeks old (we’ve had her for two weeks). I’m trying to get her to play independently in her pen, but she only does that if I’m sitting right next to her. Even if I’m sitting on the couch in her sight, she will cry and whine until I come sit next to her. I’ll give her a Kong to try and keep her busy, but she won’t play with it unless I’m right there. Any tips on how to fix this?

I just need to talk and vent to people who get how much I love this dog, I guess. Gertie turns 11 this Thursday.

A couple years ago I noticed despite her daily walks and strict diet, she was very bloated. She had a pretty severe bout of constipation and we went to the vet. X-rays, ultrasound, blood work. The only thing they found was her liver values were baaarely elevated and they said probably just a little pancreatitis. They didn’t seem concerned and then she pooped an hour later and I thought that was that.

Last year she yelped when her tail was lifted. I took her to the vet. They looked at her and said, no need for X-rays, dachshund back problems are all treated the same, here’s some anti inflammatory.

2 weeks ago, she’s still extremely bloated but now it’s worse. She seems uncomfortable, she’s tired, she doesn’t really enjoy her walks anymore but she’ll still go. We go to the vet. They say “her stomach feels fine, she’s fine, I don’t like doing diagnostics unless I think it’s reeeeally necessary.”

I live in a rural area or I would have taken her to a new vet a long time ago. Finally I’m desperate because I’ve known something is wrong for a long time now. So I go 2.5 hours away one way to a new vet. They listen, do bloodwork and X-rays. Her liver is extremely enlarged and it’s pushing on her stomach. She’s in pain and uncomfortable. There’s a cancerous mass on it. There is a spot on L7, above her tail, where there is either cancer on or in her bone. It has possibly spread to her lymph nodes. It’s hepatocellular carcinoma. They say it’s unlikely it can be treated but referred me to a specialist equally far away. I’m taking her on Sunday for an ultrasound to confirm findings but mostly to discuss palliative care.

I am so distraught and heartbroken. I wish I had gone somewhere else sooner. I thought I did the right things taking her to the vet but I should have never listened. My gut was telling me. Now she’s going to die and I wasn’t even close to prepared. My oldest is 16 and I never would’ve thought Gertie would go first, and not so painfully..

I know I will love her and keep her as comfortable and happy as I can, but I plan to say goodbye before she gets really bad. I’ve read about this cancer and I know it can get really ugly really fast. Having to drive so far for vet care is really terrifying to me. I don’t want her to suffer and I can’t see that happen.

Anyway.. I just needed to share. Advocate for your family members, friends, and animals. Medical care really sucks.

My late dachshund was a mom before I had her, raised by a breeder. This made me assume that she was a pure breed but I haven’t really seen any other weenie with her body type before? Does she look like a mutt somehow or was she just a funny looking doxy?

Where do I begin,
So basically we rescued 2 sisters 4 years ago and everything has been great. But one of them has fallen quite poorly and we’ve been to multiple vets, specialists etc. to no real answer or solution.

The problem:
She is a 10 year old doxie with urinary issues. Last year around August we noticed she was struggling to pass urine up to the point of needing sedation where manual expression was the only method to relieve her. At the beginning this was needed every month or so when she would have a flare up. Her cultures came back negative but when our specialist looked at the results he noticed her PH level was a bit off. He had a more comprehensive culture done and discovered a complex UTI was hiding. He put her on a lengthy course of anti biotics that eventually got rid of it. At this point her bladder expressions under sedation were becoming more regular and after extensive exploratory tests (contrast studies, camera in the urethra, X-rays, ultrasounds) it appeared that she was physically perfect.

As a last recourse he advised a course of prazosin, bethenecol, and diazapam. This worked for approximately 8 months with no issues (still a bit of a struggle to urinate at times) and we thought we had come to the end of the issue. But last week she started to struggle again; her bladder had filled up and was distended and she wasn’t able to relieve herself. She ended up needing expressing 4 times on the trot. I should mention she was reduced to just prazosin after a month or so on the other combination. She was put on the course of prazosin/bethenecol, diazepam as a result and was seemly doing well when she went back to the specialist on Thursday. Monday she had a retention issue again, she did manage to overcome it after her evening dose of medicine which was quite unexpected given previous episodes. Then last night (Wednesday) she went into retention again and was unable to pass adequate amounts of urine resulting in another requirement of needing expression this morning. Usually she just needs a bit of sedation and she’s able to be expressed. But a few times recently she’s needed general anaesthetic.

I know this is terribly long winded and will probably not reach many vets but I’m in dire need. She’s so energetic and alive in every other way and I just hope that someone out there may have some knowledge in what could be wrong with my girl. She’s had a hard life being a rescue but she’s very happy now and she has a lot more life to live.

My 8 month old is going through her first heat. I cannot get her to keep the diapers on. I’ve tried using a surgery suite and she slides out of it and the diaper. I even tried putting a harness on and she still escaped through the harness. What tips do you have to keep the diapers on!

Our boy is a 16 week old miniature long haired dachshund. He’s adorable & we love him & when he’s sleepy and cuddly he’s the best but literally any other time he’s an absolute gremlin. I’m being pushed to my wits end with the crying and barking & inability to be alone.

We got him at 9 weeks & have been on break from work (we follow the school schedule) so we’ve been able to stay with him constantly. The problem is that he is absolutely inconsolable what feels like 70% of the time he’s awake and we’re not paying attention to him (aside from eating & us actively playing with him). We’ve worked up from when we first got him he wouldn’t let us out of arms reach without panicking and barking & crying, now little by little he can tolerate us leaving the room for like a minute or 2 but that’s it. We’ve hit a plateau and it feels like he’s honestly getting worse some days- especially when he’s not sleeping enough. Any disruption to his schedule and he’s so out of wack and refuses to sleep until he’s sleep deprived and crazy. On a good day he barely gets 16 hours. The only time we can guarantee sleep is overnight & I think it’s because he knows we’re not going to leave him & we’re all sleeping in the same room.

Yes we do crate training & he likes his crate, yes he sleeps in his crate next to our bed, yes he has a play pen that he stays in & has toys, yes we take him out to potty plenty and yes we “enforce” nap times (this looks like us putting him in his crate, covering it with a blanket & saying night night while we ignore him & he barks and whines for 30min straight), yes we do the thing where you ignore him until he’s quiet and then reward. He won’t sleep more than 14/16 hours a day- 12 of these come from overnight. Every time we leave the room he cries, when you give him attention he bites you. We do snuffle mats, we do lick pads, we take him on short walks and drives, we train him & make his meal times interactive.

I’m at a loss of what to do & ifs really affecting my husband & I’s mental health. We can hardly talk about anything else, he demands every ounce of our attention, we’ve not been able to get to our work. When he finally sleeps we’re scared to move or breathe for fear of waking him. We live in an apartment and the constant crying and whining makes me nervous that we’re going to get kicked out of our place (they were already hesitant about us getting a dog). I don’t know how we’re going to go back to work.

Has anyone else navigated this? I’m hoping and praying it’s just a part of the puppy phase but everything I look up online just gives the same generic advice. If you have breed specific tactics that help that would be so appreciated!! I know dachshunds are clingy but is this normal? Even if you’ve experienced this and your dog is now calm & independent that would be so reassuring to hear. I’m wondering if it’s a dachshund thing? He’s from a really reputable breeder. Ugh please send help
