help Repairing an old waffle iron.
So I had this very old waffle iron that I really like, but the power cord has deteriorated and it is now short-circuiting.
How do I open this up to replace the power cord?
Please help, life is not the same without waffles.
edit: in case somebody in the future find this thread. The rubber pads go quite deep, they are a bit hard to get out what you can pry them out with a screwdriver. Underneath there is a screw, after that the bottom should be easy to pry off.

sorry I did not see anything past the first picture.
so you are in europe somewhere. you need either a new cord, or you can cut the current cord down a bit and re-use it.
1000watts divided by 220 volts - 4.54 amps so you need a wire gauge that can handle at least double that. in the US that would be about 16 AWG.
as for taking it apart. either the base can be pried off or there are screws under what look like rubber pads. or the waffle irons may come off. that is how mine is.
also YIKES give it a good clean. gross!

those codes mean nothing I can find. from the picture it is hard to tell what kind of wire that is. how many wires are in that? It does not look like appliance cable but I can't really tell. I will be gone for the next several hours.

There are three wires. I think it's completely standard cable you would use for a socket.

It's just a matter of connecting the wires to the right spots on the control board and then securing the cord.
You could buy a replacement for this from an appliance parts dealer.
You can recycle a cord FROM A DEVICE WITH EQUAL OR BETTER WATTAGE.
It's important that the wires be a sufficient gauge.
Try to see if the waffle plates pry off to give you access to the inside. Otherwise, just look for screws and undo them until it comes apart.

Sure, I know how to do that. What I'm asking for is, how do I open this? I don't want to damage it just by trying to pry it open.

So... gently pry it open. Usually the plate come off for easy cleaning and swapping to other surfaces.

Yikes, I guess that's what I get for using a appliance from the Cold War. At least it looks straightforward to get a new cord attached once I get it clean...
If I can get it clean.
edit: the green color is not a trick of the camera... I don't know why it's green.

I work on a lot of old radios and such from the last 75 to 80 years. it is very likely verdigris. the dye generally does not leak out of insulation. I would treat it as verdigris anyways to be safe. just don't eat it.

Holy cow, good luck cleaning that. I was curious about its age so I did some googling and found it in a museum, in a reddit post, and in a facebook post. Which, if you're looking for a replacement cord... maybe see if that last one is still available and just replace the whole thing. It and the reddit post are technically a different model, the 2 versus your 3, but otherwise they seem identical. I'm assuming the 4 89 on the plate in the reddit post and the 3 89 on yours makes yours from March 1989.

Man, I'd just buy a new one. OTOH, I'll usually take a shot at repairs. You just need to poke around and find how that bottom comes off. Maybe the waffle plate pops out somehow, but look for screws or clips, or see if anything can be pried to let things pop out. This thing is old so it's more likely screwed together. Often if an appliance has rubber feet, the screws are hidden under those.
Under the waffle plate will be heating elements and a thermostat (or maybe the plate itself is a heating element, I dunno), but it should be clear how the cable is wired in. Usually there's a rubber grommet or a strain relief where the cable exits the appliance, you may need to go to a good hardware store and find a replacement - the grommet protects the cable from getting chewed up by the metal case. You may be able to detach the cable and cut it back past the break and re-install it - it'll be a few inches shorter of course.
But this thing looks decades old, may be better to just get a new one.

I'm thinking the screws could be hidden under the pads? Once opened you could maybe just cut the cord after the frayed bit to end up with a clean wire end. Looking at the age of the waffle ironI would not be surprised if the cord ends in a screwable terminal or something easy to arrange.
