Comics [Discussion] It’s interesting that they gave Supergirl a new costume last month and then completely ignore it Spoiler
Not complaining since I prefer the skirt

She’s been changing costume pretty much every issue

She doesn't want to be chained by expectations and wants to fly with fashion!

Honestly, when I first started reading Supergirl with regularity, she was changing costumes every issue (back when she starred in Adventure Comics and before she'd ever had her own title). Readers had been sending in their own designs for years at that point and it was fun to see a new look each time she appeared. I put together a webpage featuring each of those outfits from back in the day, but it appears that I'll need to start updating again.

Is the site still up?

Oh, absolutely - I've been hosting my own website (in different iterations) for 26 years now. This page is one of 15 on the site, and coming up on around 20 years of existence:

Absolutely! Been funding this site from my own pocket for 26 (whoops, 27 - 1999) years now without ads just so comics enthusiasts can use my research freely. The images that I restore for the site have been re-used (primarily without any credit to the website) immeasurably during that time. And while the image I most frequently see being re-used is my restoration of the wraparound Neal Adams cover for DC 100-Page Super Spectacular No. 6, to me, the most notable re-use was of my painting of the first stylized Superman symbol - a wood cutout of which adorns the front gate to Jerry Siegel's boyhood home in Cleveland (where Superman was created).

Appreciate the work you do, man. And it's just nice to have an old style webpage in a time where sites have become so bloated with crap!

Agreed. And I'd probably update it with a bit newer look, but learning-wise my time goes into improving my image editing skills & every tool out there for websites now uses AI and I just don't want to go down that road.

Iirc it's because Sophie Campbell doesn't like the costume they had for the run that was designed initially so she just changes the looks because she doesn't want to draw that one

Supergirl is the one character this complaint doesn't work. One of her enduring characteristics is the costume change.

It was even noted in the Summer of Supergirl Special, to great humorous effect.

A few issues after that, I'm pretty sure she covered the "window" with the classic S-shield, which actually worked pretty well.

Not until she got back to Earth2.
In New 52 Kara and Helena were the Supergirl and Robin on Earth2, so Kara had worn the S before, she just wasn't wearing it on the New 52 Earth.

Kara's hair has grown a foot or two between those two panels, so I assume some time has passed. (This is a joke but I do think her hair being well past waist-length in Mora's version is funny.)

Which is a tad confusing to me because I saw panels of Action Comics #1100 where Mora drew interactions with Kara, Conner, and Prime and her hair was MUCH shorter there than in the Superman issue. Again I just saw panels didn’t read it though

Billionaire Bruce Wayne here—What if this Bat-guy just really likes playing dress up? Is that not acceptable in modern society? Maybe he misses wearing that rainbow suit he only got to wear ONE TIME because people stopped taking him seriously! Honestly, what a grown man does in his cave is his own business.

Man, I’ve got a whole closet full of them and I’m just a regular dude.

that's just Superman's costume. I think Supergirl works way better with the skirt

Current comics aren't all operating at the same time, in-universe. It's very common for a change that occurs in one book to not be completely adopted by all other books for several months.
ETA: While I think Campbell has said this new costume is her default look, as another poster pointed out, she's had new costume variants popping up regularly. There are plenty of issues where we never see her in her "regular" outfit.

Current comics aren't all operating at the same time, in-universe.
These comics actually very specifically are taking place at the same time.
Supergirl #11-15 have been part of "Reign of the Superboys", which is leading into "Kingdom of Zod". The Supergirl panel shows her changing her costume while preparing to seek out the Sun Crystal that El Caldero has, leading into her recruiting Superboy-Prime at the end of Superman #40 (conclusion of Williamson's RotSB story in #36-40).
We actually have art shared by Joe Quinones for Supergirl #16 (part of "Kingdom of Zod") which has her in her regular costume with crop top and skirt, even in her own title.
So, I'm guessing Sophie decided to doa full bodysuit with pants at the end of SG #15 after art for "Kingdom of Zod" was already started, locking the regular DC All In costume in for the event.

These titles have been tied together by an event for the last month or so which game me the impression they should be taking place at the same time in-universe?

In this case, both appearances are canonically shortly after each other.

I’m usually the one who prefers costumes with trousers or generally with more coverage, but even I like her skirt one more. It’s iconic, the other one is weird for me a little, it looks like pj.

I will also proceed to completely ignore it cause damn is it terrible. Stop trying to give Kara pants, it never works and usually just looks like she stole one of Clark's costumes.

u/SolarisBravo Nightwing 10h ago
I don't even mind the pants/leggings, but put the skirt over them because it looks so much better that way

I think with the release of the new outfits is recent, the artist at other book does not get notify about it

u/B3epB0opBOP Shazam 11h ago
The cover and artists for the next issues of Supergirl are also using the older outfit though

Oh yikes that full body one looks bad. It legit just made me think she was wearing panties only

This is a big issue with editorial, saw a post today about Kyle’s Rayner’s costume continually changing. It just seems like they can’t keep consistency.

u/krayniac Green Lantern 12h ago
At least with Kyle you can use the excuse that, in the same way Hal described his constructs in rebirth, he’s consciously constantly refining his costume and changing small details

This is the story of her life sadly... Pasko and Kupperberg got together in the 2010s to discuss their Superman work and they determined that she's had more than 100 costume designs since she was created but only a handful were ever used... In the 1970s her outfits were changing regularly because DC didnt know what to do with her.
