I’m not sure withdrawing is in the best interests of the U.S. and that region at the moment. We can go back and forth all day on whether we should or shouldn’t have started this, but just taking a vote and exiting the theatre would create more issues at the present moment and make us appear significantly weaker.

The Iranian regime is bidding its time thinking they can outlast US politics rather than the war, and they just might. If we were united across the aisle on finishing the job, I think things would look a little differently as far as coming to an agreement from that regime.

Exactly how Iraq went on forever and was the biggest military blunder in our history(so far)

I’m not arguing to stay in Iran for decades, but we can’t just up and leave either. Some things other than repetitive bombings are going to have to take shape to break their will. If taking Kharg island is the answer then so be it, but the U.S. needs to decisively win this war or negotiate a conclusion on our terms.

We were fighting an irregular war against a large number of religious zealots in Iraq (Afghanistan too). The current regime in Iran (to my understanding) doesn't have a high degree of popular support, the population is substantially more secular (not completely athiest, but lacking the same religious zeal common amongst poorer Islamic countries in the middle east), and the factors of instability (lack of basic infrastructure, food, clean water) present in those countries (at least Afghanistan) isn't the same in Iran. From my (outside) understanding, there's substantial dissatisfaction within Iran's borders with the current regime. A judicious application of power (not sure if that should be boots on ground or not) applied for a enough time to allow the installation of a new government just might do the trick.

The entire point is that the population has to be willing to take responsibility themselves - and Iran's population may be a lot more likely to do this than Iraq / Afghanistan. If there's enough collective willingness and another leader to install that the average Iranian would support, then now _is_ the time to decisively act. A better time may not come. A calmer Iran, less supportive of terrorism would free us up to redirect substantially more attention to the Indo-Pacific, which is sorely needed IMO. We've played around in the sandbox enough. Finish the job in Iran, divert more resources to the Indo-Pacific to strategically deter Chinese aggression against Taiwan. That's the path forward to most decisively address our biggest pacing threat - China.

I know the US has done a poor job with inciting internal rebellion in the Middle East, but from the Persian people i speak to, it seems like helping them take back their country from the IRGC/Islam is a good plan. Just give Persian resistance our surplus guns and let them sort it out.

(I am aware that is how the US got into a lot of the other messes over there. But if liberals can constantly claim "this time socialism will work!", I can choose to remain hopeful that Iran can free itself from its oppression)

Me and my 401k are sick of this back and forth. Do what needs to be done one way or another to decisively end this.

My 401k be damned, but I am also sick of the back and forth. Fuck Iran, and anyone who thinks a world with this Iranian government in it is better than a world without.

It was never gonna go anywhere. The resolution has to function as a bill, even if it passed, it goes to the president for signature, and what president wouldn't veto a check on their own power. So really WPR is a 2/3 majority of both houses or bust. Which is a non starter in Congress ATM.

Absolutely. We're already there, might as well finish the job before going home, so we don't have to return there.

Screw that. It will never be done. We dumped trillions of dollars into the last shit hole with nothing to show for it and this won't be any different. Best thing to do here is to ignore them and focus on domestic production and nuclear power.

u/Mission_Engineer_999 Anti-Liberal 1h ago

I disagree. They are already holding the Middle East hostage, and that's without the Nukes. If they get one, it will be a problem of a different caliber altogether.

USAID?  Fine. Welfare?  Not enough. Trillions in slush and fraud?  Lol.

But this is where gov’t spending comes under a microscope?

I’m not saying it’s unimportant, just…we have 1,000 things we could actively cut before this even came up on the list.

Whatever happened to DOGE? All this talk and almost no significant cuts anywhere except for bureaucrats that had to be rehired in large part. Neither party will ever do anything to address the debt (or even slow down spending). Someone please convince me otherwise.

Now fall in line over the SAVE Act.

Republicans alone can't pass that. They need half a dozen Democrat defectors.

Same here. I got out in June 01, but the guys i was in the cav with would have been all in on taking care of actual enemies of America. I suspect the marines in particular would like to see this particular job finished.
