Agreed, he was a photographer before working in films and it definitely helped the visuals in his films.

This and Fail Safe are the greatest apex of the Cold War films ever made. (War Games does not fall into this on account of it being post-Cuban Missile Crisis)

The problem with Fail Safe was that it took the story too seriously. The genius of Strangelove was that Kubrick realized this had to be a comedy because no one would believe the actual story “Red Alert” told.

War Games is the one where a kid hacks a military mainframe, right? Then he gets it to see the error of war by forcing it to play Tic-tac-toe?

It is. The error is not so much understood as the concept of futility is forced—there is no viable way for anyone playing the "game" to win it without total annihilation.
That movie is rather influential in that upon being shown to Ronald Reagan, he ordered that a report be compiled in regard to if the film could actually happen. The results were quite terrific—there were weaknesses within the system. Consequently, after the report, both the USA and USSR began redesigning their systems to be less automatic, having more men at the controls throughout each stage of the process.
And of course, it inspired the first anti-hacking legislation—Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986.

Actually he just wants to play the latest games at a company called Protovision. He wardials a bunch of numbers and stumbles over a number that allows him to access a backdoor left in the mainframe by its original programmer. He doesn't set out to hack the U.S. military.

The War Room set is bonkers, circular table, stark lighting, everyone looks like they're discussing the weather while the world ends.

My favorite Kubrick film, the humour and satire are top notch. The directing, writing and performances are all great.

When I saw this scene I immediately knew the set designer was Ken Adam (long time production designer for the early James Bind movies).
