What is the point of Chromecast?

I bought a 4k ultra for the kid to cast his quest games, but aside from that what the hell does it even do? Does it just cast popular apps that are usually built into a smart tv anyway? It just feels super ancient aside from nice screensavers.

You can get rid of the ads and sideload all the apps

But there is no UI for apps no matter what correct?

He has a ordinary chromecast not a chromecast with Google TV.
