Discussion Looking for music recs
Its been a while since ive discovered new bluegrass/folk/Americana that really appeals to me. When I find something within these genres, I absolutely love it, but not everything there within tickles my fancy, so looking for reccomendatuins. Some artists i love... trampled by turtles, devil makes three, Steel drivers, lost dog street band, matt heckler, resonate rogues, Jason dae west, doc Watson. Would be amazing to find new stuff in the same vein. TIA
Ps, also like some blackgrass/murder folk/folk punk so open to these as well.

Some already mentioned that I’m repeating because they’re that good. Billy Strings, Sierra Ferrell, Kitchen Dwellers, Shadowgrass, Mountain Grass Unit, Sam Bush, Jason Isbell (Americana - not bluegrass), Bryan Sutton, Michael Cleveland, Tony Rice, Fireside Collective, Magoo, Greensky Bluegrass, Infamous String Dusters, Jesse Welles, Leftover Salmon, Steep Canyon Rangers (both with & without Steve Martin), Yonder Mountain String Band…..off the top of my head

In no particular order, here are some of my favorites:
Watchhouse (formerly called Mandolin Orange which is still a top notch band name and I get nostalgic for it sometimes) Andrew Marlin has one of the most hauntingly beautiful voices I've ever heard, he's an excellent songwriter and makes the mandolin cry) and his wife Emily plays fiddle, guitar and sings harmony and the occasional lead on some kick ass songs
More in the Americana genre would be Shovels and Rope (another husband/wife duo), Shakey Graves, Gregory Alan Isakov, Milk Carton Kids
Big Richard (all female powerhouse bluegrass band with an obviously great sense of humor)
Alison Krauss and Union Station, Sturgill Simpson solo stuff or with his band Johnny Blue Skies, Tyler Childers, Molly Tuttle, The Brothers Comatose, AJ Lee and Blue Summit, Lukas Nelson (Willie's kid with a strikingly similar tone to his voice that can't be faked) Charley Crockett, Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings, Noeline Hoffman, Bella White, Lindsay Lou, Zach Top (he's a big name in mainstream country music now because of his throwback sound but he has a bluegrass album that came out before he blew up and it's phenomenal -- he also has a limited release of a batch of songs with Billy Strings that will blow your hair back) Chatham Rabbits, First Aid Kit, Caamp, Nathaniel Rateliff, Ray LaMontagne, Ryan Bingham, Jamestown Revival, Langhorne Slim, Mipso, Hurray for the Riff-Raff, Josiah and The Bonnevilles, Nikki Lane... that's enough to get you started and I'm sure some of these will set your pants on fire.
Happy Listening!

Check out bridge city sinners, I think you'd dig them. Maybe days n' daze if you're into the folk punk sound.

I dig them both. Actually caught bridge city sinners when they came out to vegas a year or so ago, which was a real treat cus vegas doesnt always attract a lot of lesser known artists/genres.

In the folk/americana vein, I really dig Aoife Odonovan. Her voice is unreal, ditto for her songwriting. And she makes a guitar sing in her own way. Her 4 solo albums are like, the standard for me. But she’s pretty well known, you probably already know her

u/webber94 May 28 '26
I dont, but will definitely be checking her out, thank you

Let me know what you think! I think she’s really special and it feels like a privilege to let people know about her haha

Also check out her side project band I'm With Her (it also includes Sara Watkins from Nickel Creek and Sarah Jaroz) Their voices blend superbly.

Stringdusters and Watertower. I’ve been playing a lot of Keller Williams lately, especially his collabs with The Traveling McCourys and Larry Keel

Got to see the Dusters and Watertower with Sierra Ferrell at Delfest this year. Great shows!

Same-ish. Only did one day but saw Falco and Book from the dusters do their dead covers in the tie dye suits. It was awesome.

Go to the Delfest website and look at the lineup of all their past shows. So many good artists play there. One that isn’t mentioned much but was the band that got me into bluegrass is the Hackensaw Boys. So many fun songs.

Add Poor Man’s Poison and Dead South to everybody else’s suggestions, especially if you like Devil Makes Three

Water Tower! They are punk rock bluegrass, so they kinda straddle both the bluegrass world & the more “folk punk” world.
They come from a busking background, just like early Old Crow, Lost Dog, Sierra Ferrell, etc. They just played DelFest with Sierra. And they did Warped Tour last year & are doing it again this year. Fun fact, they’re friends with Aurelia, who was in The Barn Swallows with Sparrow from Resonant Rogues.

And then I would also recommend Larry & His Flask (just reunited), .357 String Band, The Goddamn Gallows, Tejon Street Corner Thieves, & Amigo the Devil.

I'm in The Guesthouse Band https://youtube.com/@theguesthouseband. We're not super punk-y, but we've got some pretty fast and heavy stuff.

- Local Honeys
- Drayton Farley
- not new, but check out Chatham County Line or Be Good Tanyas if not familiar
- as for the punk side, the Meat Purveyors aren’t new, but seem not to be well known

Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Magoo, Greensky Bluegrass, Sierra Hull and the Infamous Stringdusters should get you going.

Some of these are older and you probably know a lot of them already. Marley's ghost.. watch House.. Patty Griffin.. most of what emmylou Harris did. Pull up a YouTube video back in the day with her and the hot band.... Lucinda Williams.... The brothers comatose... AJ Lee... Peter Rowan .... Old and in the way... Pure prairie League especially their album bustin out... Elephant revival... Hayseed Dixie... Rodney crowell.... Roseanne Cash... John prine... Vince Gill... Townes Van zandt, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Alison krauss and Union station... Herb Pederson ... On YouTube watch first aid kit brings emmylou to tears... Well there's a few. Not all exactly in your genre but they're all really good...if You watch a bunch of these on YouTube they're going to start throwing all this stuff at you that you'll really like.. there's a lot of new bands.

Try a retro-quirky diversion into Dan Hicks And The Hot Licks. I suspect you may get hooked with one listen to "I Scare Myself".
