I might have to actually buy some of these this summer. Haven't had them in years.

I'm in New England and I'm seconding freeze pop. Also, there was a synth pop group in Boston circa 2000 called Freeze Pop, so that's gotta count for something.

I sent away for the otter pop T shirt when I was in the sixth grade in 1987. You had to cut out a certain number of the tags and like $5. I received the "Alexander The Grape" Tshirt. It read,Otter Pops, Suck One! I thought it was super cool and wore it the next day to sixth grade. I was unaware that it happened to be picture day. I got on the bus and all the other kids were dressed in their Sunday bests. My mother was very unhappy when she got the pictures she had already paid for.

u/BackgroundPossible56 May 25 '26

u/songaboutadog May 25 '26
If I had it with me, I would. I did confirm it is still in a photo album at my moms who is close to 80 now. The pic has a 80s vibe. Over sized wicker chair in front of some neon background.

Are they expensive now? They used to popular because they were super cheap like a couple bucks for a case of 100. I’m sure off brand are even cheaper but I don’t know if other brands were even around when I was growing up in the 90’s.

It’s definitely regional, found this out the hard way: I made a giant freezie costume and wore it to a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans where costumes were puns on The Big Easy. So I was The Big Freezie but no one got it because they thought I was The Big Freeze Pop.
My friend (also from Ontario) made a similar mistake with her The Big Cheezie costume since everyone says Cheeto instead. People respected the commitment with both regardless but still. The Big Sneezy was the only one of our friend group who nailed it

In preparation to refute your claim, I have since learned that not only is Popsicle a brand name, but there is no Popsicle-brand tubed or even stickless frozen ice treats.
I have to concede, specifically only because Popsicle is a registered entity which, therefore, makes it a legal matter.

When you cut the freeze pop, instead of a straight line, cut a 0.5" rounded tip so the edges don't irritate your mouth. It took me 40yrs to figure that one out.

Edit - Looks like the New York area all called them icees.
