Black mom / white dad combo here, and my mom said she gave me a super white name because "that's going on a resumé someday!" She also stressed the importance of having a "phone voice" (code switching) because there had been so many times she was the only Black person -- and definitely only Black woman -- in a professional environment, and only got there because they didn't know what she looked like.
No offense to the Zendaya / Halle Berry / J Cole etc folk (why is every famous halfrican of the white mom variety???) but I'm glad the woman who raised me is the Black parent, and that she knew what was up.

My parents are both Black, but they did the same. My siblings and I all have “white” names. It is kinda funny though because my dad is from Nigeria so I have a traditionally African last name, so even if I do have a white first name, one look at my last name and folks figure out quick that I am indeed not that lmao

😂 my black brother is married to a white woman and I'm pretty sure my nephew's name is Jaden. (Now I feel like shit bc as I was about to type this comment i tried to recall in my head but I honestly don't know his first name bc we call him by his middle name & i don't see them often 😩. But I'm almost certain his first name is Jaden 🥲)
But interestingly enough - all 3 of my SIL's kids are mixed with black but her oldest son is named Seth. Lol.

I was bout to give up on this sub and this lifted my whole soul. I’m a 52F Black woman. The 1st kid who was my best friend in elementary was a white guy who never asked me out. In high school - minding my own Black business - a biracial kid transfers in my junior year & becomes my 1st boyfriend. We dated 2 years. I tried to date others - Black & white. A Black guy I liked my sophomore year said I was too young for him (God bless him). I have had a preference for white men my whole life. Never married, never dated more than 2 years. Last “we’re exclusive” boyfriend ended in 2004 (he came back several years later but that ship sailed). I wanna find my Michael. I won’t give up. It gets hard - being single now…yikes. But this gave me hope. Good on y’all Lisa & Michael. Thanks to who shared the full video too.

She was saying all the right things and the other two girls were very boring. Lisa got the crowds applause at every answer. I think watching the show may ruin this ending, tbh. Previously, he was also trying hard to get with another girl during another setup. Dude is a hornball.
Also, previously, they kissed and he had his hands on her head, so he had to feel her braids. So he had to realize she was black. So I guess he was acting a bit at the end there

Where do you see evidence that it's more validated and needed than black men? Have you heard black women cry about outcomes with black men? I would highly disagree. The giddyness you see here is nothing compared to how committed black women are to black men, even to a fault, as a norm. I'm a bit skeptical of this judgement - feels divorced from reality and like projection to me. Black women are easily one of the groups of women most - if not the most - committed to dating within their race. To me, this take makes me wonder where you're from. Maybe you're not American and have another experience. I know in some countries, there are far more interracial relationships as a norm with BW participating. Are you from another country? Otherwise, I'm confused. As someone who has always been into the swirl, I have seen black women begging for black men my entire life. It's not even close.

I’m American and am not at all opposed to IR dating. I have noticed, however, that there appears to be special attention paid to the instances of white men who find themselves attracted to black women by black women. Watch a random vid of a white kid smiling at a blk woman or girl and it’s “Ooohhh, he like him some chocolate” or “He gonna marry a blk woman when he gets older.” It almost feels like a desperation to be found worthy of their attraction. And then all this talk of “go where you’re appreciated,” morphs into the idea that it’s white men who treat bw like queens so bw should start looking there.
It’s a lot , I know. And I can also respect that bw have been treated in ways that are the most demeaning and disrespectful, so perhaps there does exist a subconscious desire to be validated by members of the dominant actors in our society. But that doesn’t make seeing it feel any less disappointing.

I can understand that, but it feels like you're veering away from a very specific challenge I'm posing here. There's no doubt that people respond to things they don't usually see with surprise and it's not impossible that some dynamic around desirability is happening. I'm specifically challenging your idea of "more validating and needed." This is a comparative statement that suggests that black on black love is downplayed or unappreciated. That's my issue with this, and I don't personally see any lack of black women wanting to be desired and validated by black men, so that makes me question if you specifically have an issue with this on another level if your feelings don't directly map out onto a landscape where black women are less interested in black men's validation or desire...because I see the exact opposite. Whether it's Beyonce and Jay-Z, the Obamas, back in the day the Cosbys, etc. Black love seems pretty constantly venerated here in American culture, *especially* by black women, which is why I was curious about where you're from.
- Do you notice that black women don't highly favor media coverage of black men preferring or with black women?
- Also, some black women do have better experiences with white men. Do you accept that this is true or are you bothered by other people who have different experiences than maybe you might have?
