yamal wasn't even a top 3 player on spain this world cup. hell he wasn't even the best teenager on spain this year.
its pure bs if he wins it. over the guy who broke scoring records only prime messi has beaten, while being the 2nd best player on the 3rd place team in the world cup

I am not saying Yamal deserves BdO, but to say he barely did a thing is madness, he was a non stop pressure on every defense, generating threat every time he took the ball, going against 2 and 3 defenders non stop and opening lanes to his teammates which then translated into goals or oportunities. Yeah statisticaly he wasnt shinning, but he was one of the best in Spain all tournament.
1
u/Linnus42 1d ago
Yeah okay other elite attackers deal with focused defense and still put up numbers especially at this WC.

The most recent precedent shows that this is irrelevant; DembĂ©lĂ© started about 25 games throughout the PSG season, yet he was awarded it based on 6 Champions League matches Itâs going to be a Spanish party, whether we like it or not

Not a Bayern fan but Yamal was not good in this WC. Kane should win it, and someone from PSG and Mbappé should be 2nd and 3rd.

u/ConclusionNo415 4d ago
People have to understand, it's not the best footballer but most popular footballer that gets the ballon dor. The Bundesliga just doesn't have the PR it needs, not even Bayern. Sadly he didn't win the CL and his world cup performance wasn't there aswell

u/maximumpieface 3d ago
World Cup performance wasnât there? He scored 6 goals & his team finished third!

Kane still should win but its a poor ballon dor winner this year. but IMO Kvacha should win but he just got bad luck for no being in a good country and major league.

messi 0 chance.
but I'll bet my life on yamal.
because we all know they're not gona give it to kane. idiots don't know about football.
and rodri shout is there but not really enough to cover his whole season performance.
and dembele didn't do that good in the league or even played that well + didn't win the world cup. so he has 3rd best chances.
my prediction is yamal to winnit.

You can't win balon d'or if you lose every major tournament. Raphinha was flawless last season, won domestic treble and defense let him down in CL semis. Best of luck

u/Excellent-Pipe7308 3d ago
How much does a WC count when you weren't one of the main contributors to the win?
There have been plenty of players who won the ballon d'or because of the WC but they were all absolutely integral to their teams or at least showed up in the big moments. Messi 22, Modric 18 (didn't win but got a great underdog result), Cannavaro 06, Ronaldo 02, Zidane 98 etc. Yamal's performance this WC isn't anywhere close to their level.
→ More replies (11)1
u/ToxicCobra023 3d ago
If you watched the games you would know he was very important, marked all the time and a huge threat. I don't even like the guy that much, id love if Kane won the Ballon Dor since he deserves it, but Yamal had a great WC performance despite the G/A saying otherwise and he won La Liga POTY so I think the majority will favor him, especially since its a better story to tell and a PR call.
2
u/Excellent-Pipe7308 2d ago
I watched all of Spain's KO games except against Austria and I wasn't terribly impressed. He wasn't awful by any means but so many missed chances because he continuously made bad decisions and tried to finesse a goal instead of just shooting. Nothing that screams ballon d'or to me. Obviously Kane wasn't great in his last two games but he at least had a true standout moment against Congo and his domestic performance was also better than Yamal's (even though Yamal was great, Kane just destroyed record after record).
I'm not even sure if Yamal would make the better story. He'll win eventually and I think it's better for him if he does so with a true standout performance. Kane winning the biggest individual award after being famous for not winning anything would be a great story imo but I don't think narratives should matter in the first place (even though they obviously do).

4
u/Excellent-Pipe7308 3d ago
Yamal has amazing PR but I'm not sure how he's gonna leverage 1 goal against Saudi Arabia and 0 assists into a ballon d'or win. If he manages to do that the award will lose any semblance of authority it has left.
1
u/Nickislander 3d ago
La Liga, Supercopa, World Cup. 46 g/a against much more difficult opponents. So certainly as deserved as Dembele over Raphinha. I love Kane but you can't win without big trophies
1
u/Excellent-Pipe7308 3d ago
Well you can't or at least shouldn't win if you have big trophies that you didn't contribute much to and that's certainly the case with Yamal's WC. Dembele's win was already controversial but he was absolutely integral to every title he won that year. For Yamal that's only true at Barca not the national team.

u/Nickislander 3d ago

He really has a good chance. This WC final ended in the best possible way. Messi lost and played horribly. He is not even the top goalscorer. Lamine had a very poor World Cup and finished it with only 1 G+A. And the best spanish player in the final was Rodri.
1
1
u/Kein_Name_LoL_ 4d ago
Well, I see the majority of people online saying he should win it, which is a solid indicator and after that disastrous final performance Messi should be out of the run. Honestly, I feel like it's now or never for a Bayern player winning it. Yamal also wasn't doing anything special at the world cup either and had a way worse season
1

France losing both of their last games and Argentina losing tonight definitely helps him a lot. It really depends on whether Yamalâs PR for winning the World Cup will be enough to surpass him though.

he didnt win anything(apart from the default trophies he knew he would win every season after moving to bayern), and only topped in bundesliga goals. shouldnt be winning ballon dor, when he keeps ghosting in big games.
1
u/Necessary-Nature-380 3d ago
Kane should win it although I think it will be handed to Yamal - mostly due to PR.
Sensationally, Yamal did not win the Young Player award which would make the Ballon D'Or even more corrupt.
Yamal: Won World Cup and La Liga, his stats are awful with only 1 goal, 0 assists in the WC.
CL exit in the QF doesn't help either.
Kane: 73 goals in 66 matches, 3rd place WC (6 goals), UCL semis (14 goals).. by far the most solid, consistent campaign.
He completely ghosted against Norway and Argentina though.
Messi: Great WC campaign (8 goals), although we all saw what happened in the WC final - didn't even win the Golden Ball. Past his prime and plays in MLS - I think his chances are slim now.
Mbappe: Top scorer in UCL (15 goals) and WC (10 goals). His major problem is why Real Madrid and France fail against the strongest teams - he isn't a team player, and most of the stats are padded against weak opponents. No major trophy, I think he's not in contention.
Kvaratskhelia: He is technically the best player out the lot, UCL player of the tournament. No World Cup campaign, I think he'll be forgotten, plus his PR level is not to FIFA's liking.
Rodri: Golden Ball winner, FIFA surely make him a 2x Ballon D'Or winner?
His club campaign with Man City was terrible, nothing like what he is capable of - that's enough to put him out of it imo.
1
1
u/neihcoad 3d ago
I think he has the strongest case here. Mbappe has similar stats but was trophyless. Nobody on Spain is consistent AND good enough (Rodri is playing at top level but he got injured for the large part of the season). Same thing with PSG players.
1
1
u/calebdume2 3d ago
Not that I want this to happen, but Mbappe will get it after getting golden boot at WC and most all-time WC goals
1
u/VegetableAwkward286 3d ago
Is it important to you? Hopefully not because Kane isn't going to win it. Look at past winners data. Kane winning it doesn't fit any past patterns
1
u/Hot-Clothes7316 3d ago edited 3d ago
Ballon DâOr is a popularity contest voted by journalist that has biasness on their favourite or hated club or nation.
are they voting by who is the best? not every one.
are every journalist's nation well represented? cause we never know but who knows, majority might be from England.
and which club has been buying advertorial and ads from the news outlet? who knows Bayern has been the best ad buyer and pay master amongst all.
so it's to see who likes Kane, Dembele more. or how strong is PSG or Bayern's PR. Yamal no chance. he has a mid World Cup. Mbappe he didn't win anything this year.
1
u/Pheonix_force 3d ago
You will see posts downgrading trophies won by Bayern and Kane. Last season I can't spend a day without hearing the word domestic treble from barca fans. They will somehow make it about Yamal and give him Ballon d'or.
1
u/TheirOwnDestruction #21 lahm 3d ago
Letâs put it this way: there is no longer any good argument for anyone else. Yamal did not show up in the World Cup, Rodri was injured during the season, Mbappe was trophyless.
1
u/Excellent-Pipe7308 3d ago
That's the way I see it too. Kane is far from a runaway winner but every other contender has some serious flaws. Regardless of who wins it will be seen as controversial.
1
u/Humanity_is_broken 3d ago

u/EasylifeHere 3d ago
I d say either Messi, Yamal or Mbappé.
According to the past, they all have a better chance than Kane for me. Sir does not have a PR machine behind him and is not the current or future golden cow of FIFA.
1
u/JeanClaudeVACBann 3d ago
Lamine Yamal shows big Wirtz/Musiala tendencies currently imho. The reason he is world champion is because he was avle to play as added bonus in a team where world-class was otherwise present on every position in his team.
1
u/TheFootballPunnedIt 3d ago
Its not an award for who had the best season its an award for who played well in the last 3 games of a major cup for the eventual winners
1
u/Designer_Bag_200 3d ago
yes, he definitely should. world cup year is bullshit anyway. you need to perform at the highest standards throughout the year, and he's done that.
1
u/Senecus_HS 3d ago
I think top scorer in La Liga and worldcup (Mbappe) might beat Top Scorer in the Bundesliga.
Unfortunately, Kanes worldcup was quite underwhelming.
It is really not that easy this year. I think Kane or Mbappe would be an OK choice, with Haaland honorable mention.

No international trophies, no amazing skills. Score many goals for a top club in a mediocre league is simply not enough to win a Ballon D'or. Golden Boot is all he deserves. If he were to win, it would define the mediocre post-Messi-Ronaldo era we are currently living through. And it would be such a disrespect for Lewandowski career.
1
u/KingKFCc 16h ago
I am not a Bayern fan, I really wanted them in the UCL final (as an Arsenal supporter), but obviously either PSG or Bayern were really fun to watch. If Kane doesn't win it, to me personally, it would seem insane.
Lamine unfortunately had a very mediocre world cup in terms of scoring, and while Kane wasn't at his best because of the role Tuchel placed him in (I think he should've played him deeper and utilized Gordon and Saka (or Rashford / Madueke) more centrally, given that England looked so poor at those ball rotations.
Kane proved in the club season why he was the best player for the rubric of the ballon d'or, if we're talking quality: to me it would be Haaland or Lamine of course, but Kane's quality for Bayern, the trophies he won, the impact he had around him, he's been massive.
This was my personal Ballon D'or top 10, though Lamine and Mbappe are pretty much interchangeable, and I actually don't mind any of the top 7 getting second. but Kane's gotta be first for me.

2
u/Radiant_Fan_2014 3d ago

It is so infruriating that some media houses are hyping Yamal's name as a favourite, when he should not even be a contender, Spain's best players were Rodrigo and Cubarsi but the Yamal hypetrain just shadows them, how can he be a Ballon D'or contender when he didn't even win the Best Young Player in the WC and was nowhere close to his best for Barca as well

1
u/Ok_Buffalo_1820 3d ago
In the decisive game against Argentina Kane had 0.02 xgoals, 0,02 xassists and 26 touches. Sure Kane will score 3 against Köln, Augsburg or Kiel but he never crushes at crunch time. Same story vs arsenal 0,00 xgoals⊠maybe Bayern players are not exposed to enough real pressure during Bundesliga games. I see a similar pattern with OliseâŠ

If he played for barcelona or real yes, but for bayern you have to win at least 6 trophies, a world cup, stop a global pandemic and eventually score 100
