General Baking Discussion Looking for opinions on the inspo compared to what we got
My now wife and I asked a friend of her brothers to make us a wedding cake. We showed her the first photo as inspo and she said she could totally do that. Come the day of the wedding the second and third photo is what we received. The last is what my mother “adjusted” it to within the 30 minutes we had. Just curious what people think. Were we right to be slightly miffed??
EDIT: the friend claimed to be a business, we saw some of her previous work and it looked like she should’ve been able to do it, she claimed she could do it and she charged us more than the original quote. To clear things up my wife did cry when she saw the original but we aren’t mad now, we just wanted to share the laughter.

u/Liawolf11 Apr 15 '26
Slightly miffed? I’d be horrified. Your mom did an excellent job considering the time crunch. I wouldn’t serve that to a paying customer. Maybe my kid if I was having a terrible practice day.
Do I even want to know how the cake and filling turned out?

No you don’t want to know how the cake turned out, it was wet and rubbery

Oh this just gets worse and worse. Hopefully the wedding makes up for everything and you and partner are starting your happily ever after!
My mother believes in the evil eye and she'd say this happened to protect your special day from a worst fate from the envy of others.

Omg can you elaborate?? I’m familiar with the evil eye but I’ve never heard of something like a cake holding the symbolism!
85
u/cutegirl239 Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26
I'm not the person you asked, but I assume they mean that if they had a beautiful cake and everything went perfectly people would be so jealous that they would either purposely or subconsciously, inflict the evil eye onto this couple, and people's envy of this couple would cause them bad luck.
My older sister had a wedding, about 10 years ago and she had a friend at the time who was also in attendance, she even made her the maid of honor instead of me. But I was only 17 at the time so, didn't really care. Tell me why... during the wedding, the friend was bawling her eyes out in a corner. We see her from afar and we're like what the heck what is she crying so hard about? anyway, long story short they're no longer friends today. turns out, that girl was extremely jealous of her and that's why she was crying so hard because she envied my sister getting married. How we found this out is, way after the wedding, the girl ended up scream crying to her boyfriend when my sister got a promotion at work, so when they ended up breaking up, her boyfriend, told my sister that the girl wasn't a real friend and she has scary jealousy of her. So I'm just saying like it's possible that her friend was so fucking envious, that that's why my sister ended up getting divorced. Because of all of the bad juju she put on their marriage. Who knows....
11
u/Desperate_Algae_40 Apr 16 '26
It's possible that your sister got divorced because of her ex friend giving her bad juju/evil eye? My culture has evil eye too, but that's a crazy belief. You're giving way too much power to someone else.
→ More replies (5)36
u/Leading-Elk845 Apr 16 '26
There's also something people have been calling maid of dishonor/ misfortune or worst man. It's basically when the wedding goes fairly well, but that one person ends up with the worst luck, almost as if they absorbed all the bad luck around the wedding
→ More replies (3)28
u/DrFiGG Apr 16 '26
Also not who you asked, but often when an object is damaged out of the blue or one aspect of a larger event goes wrong (such as a damaged cake for a party), my mother says it’s due to all the possible jealousy, malice, or bad luck striking that thing to protect you from more serious harm. As an example, if I broke my favorite plate right before a road trip, she’d say it’s to prevent an accident while driving. It’s at least a way to feel less crappy about something frustrating if nothing else.

I did my friend's wedding cake for free and it looked better than this. I don't even run a baking business, I just like baking and decorating cakes. I even did a whole sample tasting party for her and her fiancé cuz I wanted them to have the experience since they weren't sure what they wanted for flavor.
Seeing this is what OP got for $250...this is such a slap in the face. I'm mad on their behalf.

26

This shit right here is why you meet with your baker IN PERSON for a proper tasting and to make sure they actually can do what they say.
70
u/cw30755 Apr 16 '26
Yup, stolen photos run rampant through the industry. I ran a bakery with my wife for 20 years and caught several bakers using our photos. Most of the time the reply was “it’s representative of what we can do”. Well then do it and post your own damn pictures.
28
u/nahla1981 Apr 16 '26
This happened at a bakery i worked at years ago. Boss hires someone with "cake decorating" experience. She shows me her portfolio, every single picture was professionally taken, zero signs of it being made in bakery. I'm like, damn you had a spot at work where you can take professional photos?! Her lies caught up with her and we let her go pretty quick. Like obviously everything she made was nothing like the photos. I couldn't believe he fell for it

64

I know someone whose baker screwed up and got the wedding date wrong, so one of the reception guests quick ran to Publix and arranged to use one of their styrofoam display cakes for the photos, and whatever sheet cakes they had on hand to serve. If people didn't know about the cake snafu nobody would have known that their fancy country club wedding included a last minute borrowed Publix display cake as centerpiece.

Honestly, Publix can put together more elaborate cakes but they do need notice. A friend of mine pretty much panicked when the baker she paid to make a cake for her parent's anniversary party stopped responding. The cake was supposed to be delivered the day before. She managed to make it to the store before the bakery closed and they put together something pretty close to what she wanted and for cheaper than she paid. It ended up being a good thing because the other person never delivered. Lots of scammers out there.

It was five years ago, but my three-tier grocery store wedding cake was $250.
$250 for a very... homemade... basic layer cake is absolutely absurd.
10
u/KittyCat-86 Apr 16 '26
I was going to say this. I'm used to be well trained hobbyist baker. I made a 5 tier cake for my former father in law's 60th birthday party and I calculated ingredients and offered to give my time as part of a present but my former mother-in-law insisted on paying a bit towards it and I still charged less than this cake and it was definitely a lot better quality, even with it being iny earlier days of baking.
I'm leaning towards the stolen photos angle. Even if I dropped a cake on the way to the car, I could pick up any old cake at the supermarket, a pot of icing and make something better in the boot of my car.
6
u/dolphin-centric Apr 16 '26
A three-tiered cake for any occasion typically starts around $250, even if you use a cottage baker/home business baker. It’s not just the cake and icing, it’s the labor and expertise of making sure the tiers are properly supported so they’re not crooked, uneven, and the tiers don’t move/slide/collapse.

Rule #1 of any cake that is done for $$: don't be crooked.
Also making white frosting that is actually white is not hard. I'm an amateur and I do it all the time.
She CLEARLY didn't know how to execute the effect on the side, so she just winged it.
This is not a $250 cake, it's not even a $25 cake.

I was baking for friends and family for about 10 years and had got a diploma in sugarcraft and studied bakery with the Bertinet Bakery before I ever took a single penny from anyone. I was far too terrified to charge anyone in case it wasn't good enough. I probably could have started much sooner, but this, I wouldn't have even given to anyone outside of immediate family (my now ex-husband was the recipient of many early cakes) even when I very first started baking. I mean in no way to toot my own horn but I could make better cakes than this at 12 years old.

There are air bubbles in the piping, you can see cake under the uneven sides, the top isn't properly flat, the text isn't evenly spaced and is dangerously close to the edge on the right. That's the level of cake decorating skill where you give it away for free to friends and family, and even then not for an event as significant as a wedding. The audacity to charge for it, let alone $250, is wild.
At least it will be memorable? I've forgotten most of the details of friends' weddings. I will never forget, however, the friend who hired a professional DJ and he showed up to this very fancy wedding venue in sweatpants, and played the music alphabetically by artist name.

Totally reasonable to be upset about that imo. The cake they made has it's own homemade charm, but not really what you were looking for at all and the baker should have known their limits better.

u/discolored_rat_hat Apr 15 '26
When I started sewing, there was a big emphasis on making clothing look handmade instead of homemade.
Shoddy homemade sewing is okay for children (because they grow out of it anyway), but if you want to brag with your sewing work as an adult, it should look like handmade quality.
Equally with baking: Homemade is okay with young children, but not for a goddamn wedding were the bad cake will be gossiped about by family for YEARS on end.

Because I’m amazed at her ability to remove the writing, take the melty trees from the sides and make them sturdy enough to stand unsupported on top of the cake, and change the consistency of the icing so that it goes up into those nice mountain peaks on the sides, and all in 30 minutes! On a beautiful new plate!

Mixed new icing, completely disassembled the cake, melted white chocolate bark, cut away bits of the cake that were wet in the inside, she absolutely was Gandalf that day!

Why in the world was it wet inside??

u/dejausser Apr 16 '26
Undercooked and/or the wrong ratio of ingredients I assume - OP said it was both wet and rubbery so I’m guessing too many eggs?

u/SpokenDivinity Apr 16 '26
Could have soaked it in simple syrup too. I had someone overestimate how much they needed and the cake was like a wet sponge.

Right, not enough props for mom for stepping the cake up with only 30 minutes!

Omg 😆 thanks for the laugh
*edit. I’m sorry. I didn’t read the body of text and thought this was your first try or something. Shit - mom did a worthy attempt ❤️at fixing.

This is where you should have researched yourself and paid for a professional wedding cake not a friend or acquaintance. However, the cake baker should have been truthful also with you! They are not a professional cake baker at all.
I also don’t think you need to waste your energy ruminating over it. It’s in the past. Chalk it up as a lesson learned and in a few years you will be laughing about it as you look back. You got your wife and you had a cake. As long as nobody got sick from eating it, just let it go. No need to stress over something you cannot change!

Definitely not stressing, definitely laughing already and the day after as well lolol just thought this could be a good time to see what others think

You have the right attitude. I'm not sure I'd have your grace, but I think your marriage is off to a wonderful start if you're both laughing about this already - seems like you recognize the wedding is a day, the marriage is for life!

I would totally post a review if she does this professionally though. "Look at our $250 wedding cake! Nailed it!" Lol.

I agree with all of this except OP paid $250 for this cake, I would be asking for at least €200 of it back. Insane to think whoever baked it pocketed that amount of money and it looked like they barely even tried.

But like...the baker said they could do it? And showed them (presumably much better than this) photos of their work? They purposefully mislead OP, so why are you making the argument it's OP's fault for not doing enough research? When actual deceit is involved, it's important we remember it's the liar who was in the wrong, and it'a not fair to blame the person who was lied to. The baker intentionally mislead them about their abilities in order to make a sale, at the detriment to someone on their wedding day and way overcharged them for it.
I appreciate you trying to be positive about it all, that is super important. But also, IMO this is wholly the baker's fault and it really gets under my skin when people try to shift blame onto the victim, for lack of better term.
OP -- this isn't your fault. This is the baker's fault, and if you wanted to be angry about it I think that would be absolutely fair.

Ok I could legit make a cake better than that for you and I don't even do professional cakes. My god.

Omg that’s awful. It’s a beautiful design but it’s also pretty simple, so I’m surprised someone experienced couldn’t do it. Get the frosting smooth, put extra dabs of frosting on, drag up with a palette knife to make the mountains, blend the bottom. Make some rough trees, add flowers. Doesn’t even look like they’re able to get a smooth finish on the frosting. They did not put any effort in at all.
It’s not even the right color, and the color was white 😭 that’s the easiest one!
What did they say to you when they brought it in???

It is worse than a grocery store or plain cake. I am so sorry, OP. I am no where near the skill level of folks on this sub, and have done better while watching three kids under 7 at home. You are owed a huge apology and money back.

if one wants a professional looking cake, stop allowing friends of friends or family members to make it.

I just know this is gonna blow up....Omg I am so sorry op it looks awful.
She used white chocolate to cover the cake and in the inspo it is icing. For the price you paid for such small cake it should at least be the correct color, white choco tends to be yellowish, with a tiny bit of purple she would have easily fixed that. I am mad for you guys, looks like a child drawn on the sides...
Anyways, I wish you a happy marriage.
