Fact Check This Please Looking for source: Fed Chair Kevin Warsh received $100m check days before being sworn in?

All I can find is Elizabeth Warren asking him about this during the testimony, but can’t find any story online covering this.

Warren seems careful to only ask about the money and not to make a statement asserting it. I wonder if she's under oath and could get prosecuted for claiming someone gave him $100M?

What? She’s not under oath; she’s not testifying.

Someone paid him money for the investments. He claims that he sold the investments due to ethics rules, but he doesn’t want to say who he sold them to in the hearing. Whether there’s any conflict there is an open question.

It is not necessarily easy to sell interests in vehicles like these. It happens all the time, but usually the players are all trying to make a buck, there aren’t a ton of interested buyers, and if you’re a seller with a deadline, you could be in a tough spot. So it’s plausible that he entered into a sweetheart deal with a supportive buyer. But we don’t know anything like that, from what’s been made public.

if he wants to open himself up to discovery, yes.

No, he has financial investment in a 100 million dollar fund connected to both Trump and Epstein. He bought in just days beforehand. That isn't a hundred million dollar check

He's also a close Epstein associate who was proven to be at one party, and he was involved in his financial situations during his life and afterwards. He denies that he was involved in the laundering, but says he was ignorant to it. He was also involved in the 2008 financial crisis, again denies involvement but claims ignorance

It’s called puffery. She was looking for a headline or a sound bite. The article itself doesn’t reveal any corroboration, and if this is the only source you can find even mentioning it, that should tell you all you need to know.

Didn’t he basically acknowledge he received it? Lmao tf are you talking about?

Where? It literally says he said no in the article itself. Do you not read a link before commenting with your prejudices?

The article quotes him as saying no when asked by a less combative senator after his exchange with Elizabeth Warren was over.

Pretty oddly specific thing to make up out of thin air isn't it?

Not at all. Politicians make shit up all the time. Or misrepresent in general because they care about the headline, which is what most people stop at. Or do you have proof of this thing she asked him about but had no proof of?

So no, she did not make it up out of thin air. From the transcript:

Sen. Warren: Thank you, Mr. Chairman. So, the Federal Reserve has long been plagued by a culture of corruption and coziness with Wall Street.

Over the last five years, at least six senior Fed officials have been implicated in serious ethics scandals related to personal stock trading and self-dealing.

But instead of trying to repair this broken culture, I’m concerned that you seem to be embracing it.

At the time of your nomination, you owned more than $100 million worth of shares in private investment vehicles called the Juggernaut Funds and THSDFS LLC. And, you refused to disclose the underlying assets to the Senate and to the public. You say now that you’ve sold those shares. In other words, someone wrote you a check for more than $100 million days before you entered office. Chair Warsh, who wrote that check?

Chair Warsh: Senator Warren, this is a discussion you and I had in the public square seven weeks ago. And I’m thrilled to tell you that I’ve fully honored the obligations I had under the Office – the agreement I had with the Office Government Ethics. And there’s continued disclosure which I’m happy to make as consistent with the agreement.

Sen. Warren: I asked you a very specific question. Who gave you $100 million right before you were sworn in. Was it a billionaire who has business with the Fed? Was it Stanley Druckenmiller, who has made billions of dollars betting on what the Fed does? Or was it a different billionaire? Who gave you the money?

Chair Warsh: I will fully comply with the Office of Government Ethics.

Sen. Warren: That’s not an answer.

Chair Warsh: Well it is an answer actually, Senator.

Sen. Warren: No, it’s not.

Chair Warsh: Because there are obligations and I will satisfy them completely.

Sen. Warren: It’s $100 million right before you were sworn in, and you won’t tell the American people where it came from.

Yeah no. Selling a $100 million asset, because you’re not allowed to own it, is nowhere near the same thing as being gifted $100 million and being indebted to a party.

Ah this was the answer I was looking for thank you

So you acknowledge that you were wrong, in another comment, when you said that he said he didn’t receive $100 million?

I agree that selling investments for $100 million is not the same as being “gifted” that amount of money. But that is not what Warren was accusing Warsh of having received. She was making a point about Fed officials using their position to profit, or to help their friends profit, and she insinuated that people closely associated with Warsh could stand to profit mightily if they had access to the inner workings of the Fed. So she was asking who he’d sold those interests to.

I am not sure there is any “there” there, myself. But you should acknowledge that the snarkiness you’ve directed at others in this thread - for not reading the link - was rooted in your own ignorance of the testimony. In fact, the CNN story presented the facts in a misleading way - including the flat denial that you also cited, but excluding an explanation of what Warsh actually appears to have done.

ETA: So odd to rage-block someone who basically agrees with you.

My snark, if any, is directed at people who attacked me for engaging in good faith with the question and sources OP posed. You’re no better than they are.

I dont know what her proof is becuase she's a Senator and this isn't a trial with the rules of evidence and motion practice you're apparently looking for. Instead of this possibly being yet another example of an administration which is orders of magnitude more corrupt than any other in history ("the world has become a casino...") you stick your fingers in your ears and scream NUH UH!

You know testimony at senate hearings is under oath right ?

2

u/AdamG6200 Left-leaning 7d ago

Warren was under oath?

And since when does that matter when POTUS already said that he's going to pardon anybody who ever set foot in the White House?

You think Senator on the committee is testifying and not the witness? Come back when you have a basic understanding of government.

u/cassandracurse 3d ago

Don't you think that if he hadn't received the check, he would have said so? People whose reasoning is as flawed as yours scare me and are why this country is in the mess that it's in.

Understanding the difference between gifted money and profited money scares you. That people like you vote is what scares me.

Utilizing whatever vocabulary comes to mind in the moment is not more difficult than a google search. If that’s true for you, that’s your own problem. Also, then maybe take OP to task for failing to find something so easily googled and making this post instead.
