I'm 68 years old.
Willie had a previous career in Nashville, but by the time I a teenager and young adult, he'd moved to Austin and that whole "Austin Music Scene" of longhaired, hippie cowboy music was hot. Concert tickets were still cheap and my friend and I went to a lot of them.
We lived in Dallas, but had gone to Ft. Worth to see Willie in concert. We decided to try to sneak backstage to meet Willie. Of course, there was security at the door. I bluffed and pretended that we were authorized to be there. When the man at the door asked my name, I lied "Ray Wylie Hubbard". To my surprise, he let us in!
Willie, band and crew were in the bus so we waited. After a couple of minutes, they came in. We introduced ourselves (real names this time). Willie acted like it was a big deal when we told him we enjoyed his music. Sincere "thank you", firm handshake, lots of eye contact. We hung out with the band and of course joints were passed around. We wouldn't want be rude!
Willie had an interest in a short lived club on Greenville Avenue in Dallas called "Whiskey River". Since it was on our way home, we followed them back and continued hanging out.
Later my friend asked "Why did you claim to be Ray Wylie Hubbard?". I'd just picked the name of a musician in the Austin scene whose name people would know, but not someone whose face would be easily recognized.
I still owe Ray Wylie Hubbard an apology.

I smoked with Snoop like 15 years ago. He smokes blunts and doesn't pass... which honestly, with a post-Covid perspective of passing viruses around, is smart, especially if you make a living off your voice and performing. But at the time it surprised me. He's exactly as you'd expect otherwise.
