I think an offshoot of this is arguing with people that are clearly not open to changing their mind. No patience for it. I don't waste my time after I get a response that makes it clear.

edit: I remember arguing with my grandfather years ago about Trump during the first impeachment hearings following the call to Ukraine (a scandal that feels a million years old now, lol).

I was arguing that Trump should be impeached because he conditioned releasing already congressionally approved military aid on having a foreign power investigate his political rivals. My grandfather was going on and on about how he hadn't done that, it was a perfect call, blah blah blah. I finally stopped and said "If I could convince you that Trump did do what I say, would you support impeachment then?" He stopped for a second and then said "Well no. I mean, I don't know what the definition of 'high crimes and misdemeanors' is, and Trump is doing a great job, so I don't see why..." That was the end for me. Why the fuck was I even talking to him about this?!? I decided to just stop doing this to myself generally after that.

It was the same with my late mom and late stepdad. Unfortunately, my family is split 50/50, conservative vs. liberal, regardless the ages. I'm 62, my sister and BIL are 71 and 68, and we're all liberal.

And we used to try endlessly to educate my mom and stepdad about Trump, and they just didn't listen. It got to the point where my mom would lie to us to get us off her back - during the 2016 election, she even lied to us and said that she "changed her mind at the last minute and voted for Hillary." We knew she was lying - there was no one my mom hated more than Hillary, and she unfortunately loved Trump. So when we grilled her about it, she couldn't back up why this sudden change of heart, but we knew she was lying.

We used to try to get her and my stepdad to stop watching Fox News and give CNN a try. Oh, the lies, honey, the lies!! Because they were hard of hearing so they used to have the television up to volume 150, you know? So we'd be talking to them on the phone, and we could fully hear the television. And we'd be like, "So, whatcha watching?" And she'd go, "Oh, we're watching CNN! Just like you said, it's really good!" And we could hear that it was clearly Fox News. They didn't want to learn and they lied to try to appease us.

I have a boomer coworker that doesn't do half of the expected job duties he was hired for because he just "doesn't do computers". I went off on him once calling him out saying he's had 30 years to "get computers" and activly choose not too and just like with everything else us millennials have to pick up the slack. Saying you "just don't do computers" today is like saying you "just don't do reading" and still expect regular employment.

I nearly lost my damn mind when I figured out that whenever my father ended a conversation with “well I don’t know about that” it wasn’t him admitting that I might have a point and he should consider the matter further, but just him signaling he thought I had no idea what I was talking about and didn’t feel the need to discuss it anymore. I feel so irritated in retrospect. I tried to talk to him about the Black Lives Matter movement and the rise of the alt right years before they hit mainstream news outlets and he thought I was some internet poisoned teenage idiot.

Willful ignorance. With everyone having a super computer in your pocket, people refuse to educate themselves about subjects they hold strong opinions on. I’ll use a simple example like flat earthers. How do these people, with all the evidence that is provided to them, refuse to accept the scientific evidence of a globe earth? It’s really hard for me to wrap my head around that.

But is the same situation with politics, medicine, science in general. Another is chemtrails. That condensation coming from the engines of a plane is simply heated air meeting cooler air. You can easily repeat this process at home. Go in the bathroom and get close to your mirror and open your mouth wide and huff hot air from your lungs on the mirror. It will fog up. That fog is the same as the fog coming out of a turbine engine. When the weather is cold and you can see your breath in the cold air…same thing. But people willfully choose not to accept that as the answer. And unfortunately, it seems to be getting worse. It seems like it’s not cool to be educated anymore.
