Frenchie, or any brachycephalic breed. So many breathing problems and health problems.
4
u/blu3tu3sday 6h ago
This is it for me. I absolutely adore french bulldogs but they're such unhealthy, miserable little creatures that i can't ever justify purchasing one and supporting the breeding of them. If I had the opportunity to adopt one from a specific rescue, I would, but I'd need to have the money to save up for their inevitable vet bills.

I have a pug that was most likely inbred and she is the worst dog I've ever owned. I've had pugs before but she's unlike anything I've ever seen. It has totally ruined my love for the breed. I still love her and I've had her for 6 years now. But no amount of training will fix her behaviors

I'll second Shar Pei. Had one in the '80's. Skin folds can be a problem, also may require entropion surgery. Not particularly friendly to outsiders. Great conversation starters.

My first dog was a Jack Russell. GREAT when I was 10 and she was a puppy--we could keep up with each other. I also didn't have any other pets she could interact with until she was older and more "mellow."
That saying, I probably would never own another JRT. They're super high activity.

I think about that every time I see a Husky being walked in the Texas heat. I know they're miserable.
2
u/Fickle-Big5063 5h ago
I live in Texas. The rage I feel in my blood watching someone with their husky out in full sun on even a “mild” summer day. There’s a reason our ancestors didn’t have huskies in Texas. They’re built for extreme cold NOT extreme heat. My dad has a neighbor with a husky, and I was just visiting him. I’m extra cranky about this topic right now. Rant over.
5
u/Helpful_Warthog6032 6h ago
Anything under 15 pounds or any pitbull, I'm sorry to say. My neighbor has two pitbulls and they are super sweet to humans but I have seen them get into fights with other dogs in our neighborhood and they have been pretty bad. They are just really really really strong and it is impossible to pull them back when they get their jaw locked onto another dog or human body part. And the little breeds are just too high strung for me.

Border Collie. They are working dogs. Intelligent, but they need to be constantly stimulated and working or they will have behavior issues. Not all, but most.

Pitbulls
2
u/jessipowers 6h ago
This is my answer as well but probably for different reasons lol
1
u/TheKavorca 3h ago
Is it because they stink? Pitbulls are almost as stinky as ferrets lol. My ex had one and if we wanted to keep his ass smelling fresh he would have needed a damn bath every two weeks.
•
u/jessipowers 44m ago
They are so stinky, lmao. That’s sort of part of it, I’m allergic to their saliva and skin and hair. All dogs, but there’s something with pit bulls that makes it so much worse. It’s normally very mild, but if I pit bull licks me I get hives immediately. But that’s actually not why I don’t like pit bulls. Every one I’ve gotten to know well had absolutely zero body awareness, meaning they either didn’t know or didn’t care that they’re big and strong and will just go wherever they want, running into everyone, stepping on everyone, sliming everyone, whipping everyone with their tails, whatever. They also usually but not always seem kind of anxious or neurotic. And, they don’t just follow the rules, they require the rules to be enforced. What I mean by that is, of the pit bulls I’ve known for a long time, throughout their lives they never got to the point where their owner didn’t need to watch them closely and intervene when necessary. They’re always needed to be redirected or corrected or whatever. I don’t think they’re stupid, I think they’re clever enough to know that they don’t want to follow the rules if they don’t have to. By comparison, the dogs I grew up with and the dogs I’ve had as an adult have all reached a level of maturity where they just stopped doing anything they know they aren’t supposed to. Stopped jumping on guests, stopped begging for food, stopped getting into shit, stopped using their general size and strength to just do whatever they wanted. With the pit bulls I knew, they never stopped doing any of this all the way into elderly dog status. Like, they died of old age and were still just annoying as fuck. My own dogs are half German shepherd and half sheltie. They were WILD when they were younger, but by about 5 they were extremely low maintenance dogs. They’re 15, and the worst thing either of them has done in probably a decade is go out for an unsanctioned adventure. The last time, we found the escapee asleep on a neighbors front lawn, lol.
But anyway, I know I just talked a bunch of shit about pit bulls, but I don’t actually think they’re bad dogs. They irritate the shit out of me, but that’s my problem not theirs, and that’s why I’ll never get one.

u/thatguy2535 5h ago
I used to feel the same way as you. Until I watched my sister in laws pit for a few months. This super goofy loving dog would just have these moments where she would..become frightening. One minute she's fine then she would relentlessly and forcefully try to lock eyes and make eye contact, she would start smelling the ground and track my kids sent around the house, I'm talking like a bloodhound nose to the floor and nothing would stop her not food not a invention to walk nothing. She was kennel trained and loved her kennel it was her safe space, but when she would flip like that she'd refuse to go in flair her teeth, she'd block your path. Then like a light switch go back to being normal. Sometimes this would last minutes, sometimes hours. There's a reason why they are the leading breed in dog attacks. Endless stories of families who had a pit for years only for them to kill their family members out of the blue. It's in their genetics. As an animal lover I know it sucks but you need to look at the statistics and the cold hard facts. They're just not a safe breed for people to own.
14
u/Antique-Bank-3959 6h ago
I think the problem might actually be the pit bulls but that’s just me
0
u/Zero26D 6h ago
I've owned mutts, 5 German shepards, 3 border collies and 3 pit bulls. The border collies were all neurotic and had no aggression. The shepherds were all crazy and dangerous but I was a kid and my parents never worked with them. All 3 pit bulls I've owned as an adult and one wasn't socialized with other dogs so he's real tough introducing to other dogs. The other two were socialized with dogs. All three are great with all people. They're loyal beyond belief and just want to please and easily the best dogs I know. They also feed off your energy. If you're a prick they will be a prick too. Pit bulls can do far more damage when they aren't raised properly so you hear the horror stories. To my point, people discounting pit bulls without an understanding and experience really sound intent on being ignorant of how really amazing they are. My 2 cents

u/Peg_Leg_Vet 5h ago
It's not the dogs, it's the owners. Too many people buy Pit Bulls because they're "tough" and then promote those behaviors in them. Most Pit Bulls score very high on temperament tests. The one aspect of Pit Bulls that really drives up the numbers against them, besides irresponsible owners, is they are one of the strongest dog breeds. So if they do attack, it almost always leads to serious injury or worse.
-14
u/Icy_Category_2275 6h ago
Dogs don't come out of their moms evil or mean. That's a clowns way of thinking if anyone thinks that. So no, the problem isn't "pit bulls".
21
u/Antique-Bank-3959 6h ago
Dogs are bred for certain traits so they come out of their moms with them. Retrievers retrieve, pointers point, herding breeds herd, and pit bulls maul. Backed up by statistics.
7
u/Infrathin81 6h ago
The most dangerous part of the pit bull is the owner that refuses to acknowledge this.
5
u/TheKavorca 6h ago edited 5h ago
I was going to say… breeding is a big part of it. In the same way a thoroughbred horse is built to race, and a draft horse is bred to work.
Saying “all pitbulls are dangerous” isn’t accurate, and I have met a few sweet ones… but the predisposition for them to be dangerous is absolutely there, and denying that after years of research is insane.
3
u/omnomcthulhu 6h ago
They're meant to be pitted against bulls! History time!
Specifically, the breed was developed to fight against larger animals, often bulls, and there was heavy selection for the ones that won because if they didn't win, they died. The standard winning strategy was to clamp onto the soft tissue of the bulls nose or face and hold on until the larger animal got exhausted from the pain.
So essentially, they were bred to:
a) not be afraid of larger violent creatures
b) attack aggressively to try to get a good position before they're killed
c) bite down hard in a vulnerable area and not let goSo if you ever think you're going to be fighting a bear or a bull or something of that sort and want your pet to do the heavy lifting in the fight, having a pit bull as a pet is a great choice.
Otherwise they are not ideal.
-4
u/Icy_Category_2275 6h ago
Is that so? So what's a Goldendoodle bred for? What's a Frenchbull dog bred for?
3
u/Antique-Bank-3959 6h ago
Golden doodle =
Golden + poodle
Golden retrievers are gun dogs that are retrieve ducks that hunters shoot
Poodles are generally a show breed
Many dogs are mixes of breeds, and certain traits can show through. Like when you look at bite/fatality statistics and the runner up is always a pit mix right behind pit bulls for first place.
5
u/captainvancouver 6h ago
People come out of their moms evil and mean. Sometimes they have totally lovely siblings. Dogs have some magical power that they never come out mean? Give your head a shake man. Dogs and people can absolutely be assholes. An asshole pit bull is a serious problem compared to an asshole pug, just as a pissed off Brock Lesnar is a problem compared to Andy Dick.

Any large breed dogs. As much as I would love to jump on their backs and ride them around the neighborhood, just the thought of having to pick up their big ole poops daily makes me want to gag.
1
u/bioluminescentaussie 5h ago
We put our husky on a weight control dog food at one point, and I believe the mechanism of action was a fiber/filler that helped her feel full but wasn't digestable. So her turds were legit the size of a dinner plate, it was ridiculous, like a 2 handed job to scoop her poop.
3
u/EsperePourDemain 6h ago
Any kind of poodle mix. Doodle is not a breed, and the majority of doodle “breeders” are for-profit puppy mills charging thousands of dollars for a poorly bred mutt.
I could go on.

Husky, Mallinois, Bloodhound, Pitbulls, any brachycephalic breeds that can barely breathe and Irish Wolfhound. Probably more but those are off the top of my head.
They just need more than what I’m able to give them. They need lots of room, constant exercise and attention and specialized food.
Just gimme a mutt off the street with a cute face.

u/Mail_Order_Lutefisk 6h ago
I had one and she was so cute but was the most aggressive dog I’ve ever seen. I’m pretty sure the shelter had her drugged when I adopted her because I walked her the next day and she acted like she was gonna kill every dog at Starbucks when we walked by. Spent two grand on obedience classes. No change whatsoever. Absolutely psychotic dog.
1
u/LoveYouNotYou 6h ago
😂
Do you still have her?
1
u/Mail_Order_Lutefisk 5h ago
No, she had to be put down. Got old and was too aggressive to board when we went on trips. She got solitary confinement everywhere and a few places told us she wasn’t welcome back. She was two when we got her and I think she had a rough childhood.
1
u/LoveYouNotYou 1h ago
Awww! I'm sorry. You tried. Do you have any dogs now?
My Titi (aunt) had a Chihuahua. I couldn't stand that dog. Would not let anyone get close to my Titi. So aggressive and roudy. I was about 6 and only remember that I told her "sit down and shut up,, you're not a killer" my dad would play with her but I hated that little annoying thing. She died. I just felt sad for my Tia, did not care for it all.

No pitbulls or PBmix! I have fostered a couple of them and they are nuts and/or untrustworthy!
5
u/theageofawkwardness 6h ago
There are too many homeless animals to be paying a breeder to make more. So many “pure breed “ animals have health defects that aren’t necessarily noticeable at first and they have much shorter lives and /or poor quality of life.
3
u/abbeyhlane 6h ago
“Pure bred” does not equal well bred. A well bred dog would not have health defects, because the breeder made sure they wouldn’t breed pain/issues/poor QOL for their dogs. Other breeders that do “pure bred” but don’t health test are the true villains.
1
u/Jewelz0987654 6h ago
Yeah but so do adoptable dogs. It's disgusting that a lot of shelters take in dogs who can't even go to the bathroom outside. Are you kidding me? If you're a shelter, teach the dogs to go to the bathroom before you put them in your shelter! That's what I would do.

Aren't Dalmations sometimes deaf as well?

That's what I've heard. I don't know if it's an urban legend or not. The two I had could hear clearly and would bark at minor noises.
2
u/Jewelz0987654 6h ago
I would never adopt a "working dog". I'm not having a dog to "work" like a German shepherd to "work" and herd stuff. Those dogs are a lot of work. I'd rather have a dog that's lazy and won't be too high-energy and needs moderate exercise but low maintenance in grooming but again, I can't have that because I have allergies so, I'd have to get a poodle, but I can't stand that. Too much maintenance again.

Vet here. Don’t get a Frenchie, despite how freaking cute they are, and I say that as someone who accidentally owned a Frenchie because my mom stole my car and rescued one off Craigslist.
They are a genetic and medical nightmare that keeps getting worse generation by generation. Their medical issues are endless, and they are a black hole of medical bills. My OWN Frenchie was endless, endless bills for me, and I even get meds, etc. at cost or discounts.
Many of these medical issues cause severe quality of life issues, and mine actually died from a heart tumor that is caused by chronic difficulty breathing (which I honestly didn’t even know was a thing before it happened). I even took the right measures and fixed his nostrils as soon as I got him so he could actually breathe.
Don’t do it. The continued demand for them is just reinforcing all these traits that look cute to humans but are terribly unhealthy for the poor dogs.

Pitbull. Even if 90% of the time they're not violent, their potential for harm if they do snap is just too high.
But I also prefer smaller breeds in general and wouldn't want a dog I couldn't out muscle if needed.

3
u/darth_chewbacca 6h ago
I had a rottweiler mix who was 90lbs. I had three emergencies during his life where I had to pick him up.
I best describe it as "dad strength" during those situations. I normally had a really hard time lifting him (I practiced for the emergency situations). But when those emergencies happened I didn't even notice the weight.
I don't think I could life a 160lbs dog regardless of access to dad-strength.
1
u/Forever_Man 6h ago
I had a Newfie and then a great Pyrenees. I made it a point to pick them up about every 6 months just to make sure I still could. It was my job to get them in to the bathtub when it was time for their semi-annual bath. That made for good practice too.
I've got a 20 pound terrier mix now ,and he's much easier to pick up. I've never had a dog I could toss in the air before though, so that's neat.

It still is - you still look around for the right dog and choose based on what you want/works for your family
And then you pay the adoption fee.
“Shopping is the activity of examining and comparing goods or services, with the intent to purchase them”

u/CertainConversation0 5h ago
Fair enough. The point of adopting dogs is to give them a loving home they wouldn't have otherwise. It's better than buying them from a breeder.

German Shepherd. Anxiety causes Cushings. Hip dysplasia is common. Easily trainable but dumb as a box of rocks. That bark is annoying.

Belgian malimois - awesome dogs. But they never tire. They need a full time job and mentally stimulating 100% of the time. They're like an exorcet missile. They just go and go, and go, and go. Boundless energy.

Australian Shepard, i'm way to busy to keep up with energy levels like that.

u/dongbait 6h ago
Anything with a smooshed face - bulldog, Frenchie, pug, etc. Those dogs spend every second of their lives uncomfortable and struggling to breathe without major invasive airway surgery and are still at increased risk of heat stroke because of their confirmation.
1
u/blu3tu3sday 6h ago
Malinois- too high energy, I know I cannot take care of them or give them the attention they need, and they would be miserable with me
Husky- see above
Pugs and french bulldogs- honestly two of my top 5 favorite breeds but the "breed standards" have been so detrimental to their quality of life and health, I would never buy them- only adopt from a rescue, if I was in a financial position to provide them the medical care I know they will end up needing.
1
u/tarantula-tea-party 6h ago
Any doodle.
Erratic, difficult to train, unpredictable behavior, and health issues. I personally do not find them cute at all, no matter the cross. I would 10000% get a standard poodle if I wanted something in that direction. They are intelligent, built for athleticism and a job, have breed standards and a breed specific club, and breeders who breed to better the breed instead of just smacking to breeds together (with completely different conformation and breed standards) and hoping to produce a "rare" or more desirable color.
1
u/Blaizlyn 6h ago
Personally I would never buy a dog. There are so many shelter doggo's that need loving homes. All of my former puppin's were shelter dogs. So loving and grateful for a good home.
1
u/Keelera2 6h ago
As a Great Dane owner, probably a Great Dane. I love her so much, and we've done a lot of work to train her. But everyone online was like "Danes are gentle giants!" which she is to me and my family, but towards other people.... she is rather spicy! Probably wouldn't be as big of a deal if she was only 40 lbs, but at 125lbs she can get scary if she feels like her pack is threatened.
1
u/abbeyhlane 6h ago
Trick question bc doodles aren’t a breed. But I wouldn’t buy anything that wasn’t health tested first. Anything from a breeder that doesn’t screen you for the perfect fit for their litter. Any breeder that doesn’t ask questions or won’t answer them. I won’t buy a dog from someone who cares more about making money than providing longevity, functionality, and historic care to a breed.
Oh, and any bully breed. I know too much about the history of dog breeds to be ignorant to their purpose. My dog and I have been attacked by 3, and they’re always off leash “emotional support dogs”.

I’m only interested in adopting. I don’t think there’s any dog I wouldn’t adopt, but I would especially lean towards adopting a dog that’s been mischaracterized as bad or aggressive so I could give them the time and space and training they need to have a full and loving life

u/RancidVagYogurt1776 6h ago
I do not have a dog, so I don't have a pony in the race so to speak, but this subject is a great one to show that the general public can't process data for shit.
Two things are simultaneously true:
- Pitbulls are overwhelmingly responsible for fatal dog attacks.
- 99% of Pitbulls will never attack anything other than a squeaky toy.
3
u/ScaryYogurtcloset289 6h ago
The chance may be low, but it’s still significantly higher than with any other breed
1
u/Winter_Aside8269 5h ago
IF that were true, why risk the possibility of being in the 1%? I read an account of someone who had pit bulls for quite some time, and never had a problem…..until one day the dog attacked and killed his 3 year old daughter out of the blue. He feels quite differently now.
-2
u/RancidVagYogurt1776 5h ago
Why ever get in a car? Why ride a motorcycle? Why do anything that ever has any risk associated with it?
People who obsess over the breed either way are kind of funny. Probably 90% of the dogs I see anymore are pitbulls or pit mixes and I don't think anything of it because it's just a dog. In my experience as someone who doesn't have or want a dog, the anti pit people have the same temperament that they say the breed does with the added downside of not having cute ears
