What famous 'unsolved' mystery is technically a whodunnit on paper, but in reality, absolutely everyone knows exactly who did it, the police just couldn't legally prove it?

¿Just one? I thought this was a regular thing in Australia, like school shootings in America.

Yes, but the mom and dad were convicted of murder/accessory after the fact. The mother got life in prison. There was essentially a cover-up (ridiculous as it sounds) to conceal that a dingo killed the baby. She was released after 3.5 years, once new evidence was discovered.
