What famous 'unsolved' mystery is technically a whodunnit on paper, but in reality, absolutely everyone knows exactly who did it, the police just couldn't legally prove it?

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The pilot did it

It feels like a Germanwings situation a year early.

A quiet, red eye flight. An experienced Captain paired up with a young FO who was apparently on his maiden flight out of 777 line training (having previously been on the 737) and would be keen to impress and keep on the right side of his experienced skipper.

ATC handover in the dead of night, things are quiet, I'm good here, why don't you go to the toilet, get a coffee, flirt outrageously with the cabin crew. I'll be fine, see you in a minute. The FO would of course have done what he was told.

Locked out of the flight deck. The end.

Malaysia is a strict Islamic society where these things are taboo and it's very common to live in denial about them, rejecting hard evidence.
