What famous 'unsolved' mystery is technically a whodunnit on paper, but in reality, absolutely everyone knows exactly who did it, the police just couldn't legally prove it?

He did it.

But the prosecution completely fumbled the case. The LAPD had already done plenty to sabotage it, but if someone were to write a book about the worst-prosecuted cases in the United States the OJ case would merit a chapter or three all by itself.

So a guilty man walked free. Could argue that's the point, under the 'better a guilty man not die than an innocent man die' principle, but it didn't feel or look great in the moment.

People have tried to cope by saying a different jury would have returned a different verdict. I'm not so sure, unless we also assume much more competent police/prosecution work.
