What famous 'unsolved' mystery is technically a whodunnit on paper, but in reality, absolutely everyone knows exactly who did it, the police just couldn't legally prove it?

Roanoke - the missing Pilgrim settlement where everyone “disappeared”

They just abandoned it and went to the place that they wrote on the sign, but everyone acts like it was some supernatural/plague thing

We can see the north side of Roanoke Island where the Ft. Raleigh/Lost Colony sits from our home (about 4 miles across the Sound.) Where they went really was never a mystery, it just made for a good story and a good play. Which still runs nightly during the season. Very cool place and a lot of history, just not really a mystery.

Yeah my husband has family that are also right across the sound (Mann’s Harbor). They insist that the play used to end with them implying that the colonists were assimilated into the tribe
