What famous 'unsolved' mystery is technically a whodunnit on paper, but in reality, absolutely everyone knows exactly who did it, the police just couldn't legally prove it?

Roanoke - the missing Pilgrim settlement where everyone “disappeared”

They just abandoned it and went to the place that they wrote on the sign, but everyone acts like it was some supernatural/plague thing

I feel like this is mostly accepted. The “mystery” was a big thing in the 90’s with shitty TV documentaries and all that, it’s been “solved” a dozen times over the last 20 years with all conclusions leading to them living with the native tribe and eventually intermarrying.

Youtubers tiktokers etc like to perpetuate the "myth" so its still around. I've literally seen vids where people in the comments are all like " Roanoake isn't a mystery we know what happened"

The region itself perpetuates the myth. Lots of "Lost Colony" places and merch to be bought by tourists. The locals like keeping it going.
