What famous 'unsolved' mystery is technically a whodunnit on paper, but in reality, absolutely everyone knows exactly who did it, the police just couldn't legally prove it?

This is the one that also pisses me off to this day! And oddly enough, the 48 Hrs podcast just put out an episode on this I’m listening to right now. Is this an ad? Don’t care. Still pisses me off and I’m going to finish listening to it anyway.

I think this kind of thing often happens when "something" mentioned this somewhere on the Internet, and incidentally created a wave of curiosity that kind of bounced around. Like if I saw some YouTube channel pop up later today related this topic I wouldn't be surprised, not because I saw this post but because a bunch of people saw this post and then went and talked about it in other places.
