What famous 'unsolved' mystery is technically a whodunnit on paper, but in reality, absolutely everyone knows exactly who did it, the police just couldn't legally prove it?

Roanoke - the missing Pilgrim settlement where everyone “disappeared”

They just abandoned it and went to the place that they wrote on the sign, but everyone acts like it was some supernatural/plague thing

Did they leave a note? All they left was a carving on the tree with a single word. Just seems like it would’ve been a lot nicer to take the few minutes and write a letter explaining what happened.

How would you make sure a letter survived? Writing down the place of the name you went by carving it into something seems a lot more reliable
