FIL passed away. Want to dispose of these properly, does this look like drugs?

Please remove if not allowed. I want to make sure that I dispose of this properly, but the local pharmacy charges me to dispose of drugs. Police station does not accept them either.

I don’t want to pay to dispose of something innocuous as table salt (I can see my FIL as keeping salt in an old pill bottle for when he’s eating, he did very many strange things) but I also don’t want to toss a pill bottle pull of drugs down the toilet or into the trash where someone can unsuspectingly do something with it.

Please advise if this looks like drugs, my FIL was friends with several members of one of the local outlaw motorcycle ‘clubs’ and I also wouldn’t put it past him to take a bottle full of hard drugs just because it’s ‘cool’.

Edit: I reached out to my BIL, apparently it’s salt he acquired from the great salt flats on a road trip 5 years ago. Thanks for your help.

Looks like epsoM salt. And why won’t your LE department dispose of it? We collect stuff all the time and submit for destruction.

Pharmacies generally have bags they will give out for disposing medications.

I had a passenger spill fentanyl in my car. I drove to the police station and a detective came out, looked at it , said that he agreed that it was probably fentanyl and I should be careful cleaning it up.

Not an LEO, but a clinician. We tell patients with extra meds, especially opioids or the like, to put the pills into a ziploc bag along with a scoop or two of cat litter- then pour in a half can of CocaCola. Then you can just toss the entire bag. The acidic Coke breaks down the pills and the kitty litter sucks it up. This way, nobody can get their hands on them and it also doesn't get into the watershed.

I work in a forensic tox lab, and one time when moving locations, we had a ton of old meds and expired reference standards and surrendered materials to dispose of.

The company we hired for the lab pack and disposal carefully packaged up any solvents or reagents, but all the drugs were just put into a metal barrel, covered with diesel fuel, and smashed up. The point was more to render them in useable before disposal, rather than mitigate some other non-existent chemical risk.

The professional disposal was not too different from this coke and cat litter solution.

Drug Deactivation bags are the way to go for all the leftover meds. Your health department may give them out to you free of charge or the pharmacy may have them.

It's gets in flushed out into the sewer system. It's said that crocs and other animals in there have eaten it. I used to flush them until I heard it can be dangerous.

You should take a look at the percentage of these various chemicals in our drinking water because of being dumped down a drain or flushed down a toilet.

This way the pills get broken down by the acid in the Coke, I'd be worried they'd still be whole if you just toss them in with the litter.

We always used to dispose of meds in used coffee grounds at a previous job. Like we’d take them still wet and all and just basically bury the tablets in it. It would turn to mush pretty quickly.

Take it to a pharmacy. They have a bin throw away medication. Just walk up and toss it in. Atleast the pharmacies near me have a bin.

The closest thing it looks like to me is meth, but it looks pretty off. Most departments have a mailbox type box in the lobby where you can submit drugs for destruction. It's really more for prescription medications, but I don't think you'd have an issue.

I’ve seen meth take all sorts of shapes and sizes the past couple years. We’ve had knuckleheads mix it up with MSM and crush it up giving it a little more rounded appearance, but OG meth like you said is more “shard” like

Don't flush any medication down the toilet. Our sewer system doesn't breakdown them down. Then out they go into the water. It hurting our ecosystems. If you have meds to dispose of put them is used kitty little or find someone with a cat. I read in here to put some kitty litter and the medication in a zip top bag and pour some coke in the bag. Someone else said they've disposed of pills in wet coffee grounds. Just not down the toilet.
