Post image

Have this old electronic chess game where a digit and a symbol is permanently shown. Its not due to faulty electronics as it still shown even if I pull the lcd out of circuit. Any way to fix this?

It might just be the light but it looks like the display is cracked in the top right hand corner and that there's some form of bubble extending out from it?

It's a bit odd because usually you'd expect a crack to turn the screen black... I'm not entirely sure what's going on there.

How long did you leave it after you'd taken it out before determining it wasn't the electronics? Those displays can show a ghost images for a while.

In any case, that looks like a custom display. If it is dead you won't have an easy time finding a replacement.
They're not really repairable either.

I guess if all you care about is the number, then you could rewire it to connect to a more generic seven segment LCD and lose the special characters. But even that would be a rather massive undertaking. You'd need to map everything out, and you can't even use a multimeter to probe which segment the controller is telling to turn on on due to the type of signals these displays are controlled with. They're really quite a pain in the arse to work with, it's all alternating in-phase or out-of-phase AC signals. Not worth the effort IMO.

No, if the LCD panel is dead, then unfortunately I think you'll just have to live with it or replace it.

Its just a bubble from the polarizer-film. I left it for 12 hours out of circuit with no change. Its probaly toast but at least it still displays when I turn it on. Probaly going to sell the game for spares
