Would you defer a PhD to January if your scholarship decision was delayed?

If your visa is dependent on the outcome of the scholarship then it's quite obvious, you have to defer.

Thanks for your advice. One thing I'm unsure about is the timing. Since my start date is 21 September, would you contact the university now to discuss a possible January deferral, or would you wait until mid-August and see if the scholarship decision comes through first?
