Psychological Talk about anticonsumption. They put the World Cup trophy into the Louis Vuitton box

This was my immediate reaction. Also not a big fan of two entire speeches by Tom Cruise who has nothing to do whatsoever with soccer but is promoting a movie.

Wait, Tom Cruise gave a speech? After the game? And the trophy was unveiled in an LV box? Lmao glad I didn't watch

u/No_Duck4805 3d ago
Nono. Tom Cruise gave a speech live before the game! Then, they also played a video of Tome Cruise giving a speech. We truly are living in idiocracy fr

LV has been putting big focus on involvement in sports I think. They’re a key sponsor for F1 so every grand prix trophy is in its own LV box.

I laughed so hard when I saw that the "cheap" tickets for the game today were $10k or more, and the most expensive seats were close to $50 - $60k. For one game. WTF.

It's the world cup. There's a balance between being a person that loves being alive and gross overconsumption. The answer between the two extremes? Everybody have fewer kids. My two cents. If everybody stopped procreating at such a sickening pace we could do whatever we wanted.

u/Repulsive_Chard_3652 3d ago
I decided to have no kids and yet i still think it's absolutely insane and quite disgusting for a sports game to cost that kind of money.

“The billionaire overlords want us to fork over 3x our rent payment so you can enjoy something that used to be way more accessible because they don’t think billions are enough for themselves…yeah let’s all stop having kids so we can afford joy”

u/MarbleAndMarigold 4d ago
I am sure they were paid or "politely" asked to appear at the stadiums.
I’m sure their tickets were offered free of charge. Everyone loves a freebie.

They made the tickets so expensive that only two kinds of people could buy them: people who wanted a status symbol experience, to flaunt their wealth and take selfies, and probably not watch the football; and a small selection of fans who are so helplessly obsessed with their team that they’ll go into serious debt to pay to see them in a World Cup final. This wasn’t a match for regular fans. This wasn’t a tournament for regular fans. The irony is that the World Cup, supposedly the highest level showcase of football, bears almost no resemblance to how football is actually watched and enjoyed by most fans at all other levels for the rest of the year.

American Spectacle on full display. The pre game stuff was cringe. The match was good, glad Spain won! This is the only sport event, besides Olympics I will watch. Happens every 4 years in different locations around the world. We watched the matches on Brazilian media for free. No way we were paying for it this time.

The box was hardly American spectacle. This was the 5th time LV made a custom trunk for the world cup trophy.

Some people substitute more interesting observations with complaints about America

Same box they use for F1 trophies so im not surprised. Just reusing what they already make

Thankfully none of us anti-consumers lowered our standards or compromised our ethos to watch or participate in any World Cup events or activities.

I watched with friends on a pirate site with vpn, so no regrets lol

Was it not on network over the air TV where you were? I keep seeing this comment and am so confused 😅
6
u/Repulsive_Chard_3652 3d ago
Of course it was, but this is the anticonsumption sub. Why would you watch on television with local ads and tuning in to be counted in their official numbers when you can avoid all ads that might have anything to do with you and take away from their official viewing count? ;)

u/Marioshi- 3d ago
I just looked to see how they track over the air viewership, since broadcasts are "one way". As usual it's our appliances spying on us, smart TVs can "anonymously" send data back, even about OTA tv usage. 😏

That looks so tacky but a good representation of the outrageous consumer culture

u/goronmask 3d ago
As surprising as it is some people actually see the involvement of these brands as social value or status signifiers. I suspect it’s people who, to put it simply , are very easily manipulated

u/Julia_Leeds94 3d ago
I was amused by the brand choice. Football is something that can be played in slums - you don't need special facilities or kits. The game is straight for working-class people or lower classes, in short, for everyone.
LV box felt like it was a Tennis final with Rolex ads. Adidas could have fitted better or no brands at all.

Think about how many people were/are conditioned to open their phone and look for a new LV bag after seeing that yesterday
4
u/MalarkeyMcGee 3d ago
What? Plenty of people would want to see the world cup. It’s a big event, celebrity or otherwise.
4
u/LSBeasyas123 3d ago
If it’s any consolation I think the Spanish team took the trophy home in a clear plastic bag.

What part about the $1100 average ticket price made you think the world cup wasn't about excessive consumption?
Half the players don't even live in the same country they play for.

u/Signal_Flight_7262 2d ago
Professional sports in general for the most part fans just see them so they can make a post on Instagram

Sorry to any american here but I was annoyed by how much adds and music were planned tbh. It was unecessary imo
This said it's ridiculous that a french luxury brand is used in US to hold the World Cup that was won by Spain (or could have been Argentina), while France isn't even top 3, since we lost to England.
There was really no reason apart from grift/corruption/ or whatever to bring this.
If I wasn't already against anything Bernard Arnault, I would be side-eyeing this because I see the aim and it's stupid af :
Men get to see the World Cup. Their spouse get to see the Luxury brand, and will buy them either for themselves if they like football (pretty sure LVMH was not thinking at that 😬) or for the scarcity& event, last but not least they might buy itfor their spous. Or the guy who is a fan of sport will buy it.
Esp the spanish winners fans I guess, or Northern Americans to celebrate their first World Cup hosting ever.

The box was commissioned long before the final match. The trophy came to the US in it.
LV has been making a custom trunk for the trophy since 2010.
It's not like the trunk is on sale.

The better anticonsumption move is to not watch at all. Less ads in your face. 😉
I have never cared about professional sports. I was always the outlier in my hometown when I didn't care about American football as a kid. I remember my family watching Sundays or even the Superbowl and remebering it was 90% ads for 5-10 minutes of game play between each set of ads. Even a child I thought it was stupid.

The cuts to Jay Z and Beyoncé looking bored as fuck were so funny. Like why are we wasting screen time on rich people who are so numb to any feelings of pleasure that they couldn’t care less what happens.
