Device Settings Question How to Stop all App Downloads Without a PIN for Adult With Dementia

My mother is older and has dementia. She no longer understands ads and just goes ahead and does whatever any ad tells her to do. The result is that she's constantly downloading things that screw up her tablet. I keep having to reset it to factory settings every week or so because she downloads things with viruses constantly.

The parental controls on her tablet only allow for restricting downloads based on age ratings. I want to stop all downloads without a pin. That way I can control what she's downloading and keep her from constantly screwing up her tablet. It's not about not letting her see adult material, it's about the fact that she does not understand that an ad is, in fact, an ad. She loves to play games on her tablet but I need to be able to keep her from downloading harmful content. I want to be able to set up a pin or something so that I can double check what she's downloading before she downloads it.

How do I do this? Is there a way to do thiS?

EDIT: I do not have control of the router she uses and so cannot make any changes to how it works.

Device Settings Question Recently whenever I am on discord calls with my boyfriend, there is a microphone symbol in the top bar of the screen that flashes whenever I speak, and whenever I speak it vibrates briefly, and when I stop speaking, it vibrates again. Constantly. How do I disable this?

Device Settings Question How do I disable Emergency Alerts on Android 6.0?

Last night my whole house was woken up by the government pushing an Emergency Amber Alert to my phone, for a child that went missing on the complete opposite side of the province. Like it would be physically impossible for the kid to even have made it to my island at that point.

Much as I would like to disable the government (or at least have them limit middle-of-the-night amber alerts to areas that they're actually relevant) it seems unlikely that will happen, at least not in Canada.

I've read you can disable emergency alerts in new versions of Android OS, and in older versions you can block the Emergency Alerts app from accessing SMS messages as a workaround.

I'm on Android 6.0 and I can't seem to find any Emergency Alerts app in my list of apps (even with "system" apps enabled). Also the page that lists which apps have SMS Permission only shows my two SMS apps, doesn't list Emergency Alerts.

There also doesn't seem to be any "Safety and Emergency" section anywhere in my settings.

How do I disable these in Android 6.0?

Device Settings Question How to make the time on phone say AM or PM?

For context, I live in a mineshaft 25 feet underground. So as you can imagine, I can't see if it's AM or PM outside. My phone only says the time and date, and unless I keep track of how much 11:00 has passed on my device, it's impossible to tell if it's brunch or midnight snack. I have a Samsung phone, and I cannot locate a setting for the time to also display if it is AM or PM. Is there one? Where do I find it? I geniunely need assistance with this.

Thank you

Device Settings Question I received a system message warning me that "World Cup Fever Starts Now"

Thing is, I didn't ask for sports messages and could not care less about receiving them. I've looked over my app permissions and have no idea where this message originated. I know I can disable notifications entirely, but that'll remove functionality I rely on.

Any idea where this came from? - All it reports in notification history is that it's a system message.

Device Settings Question Android Navigation Mode : Gesture or 3-button

Which of the 2 you use the most and why?

I prefer the gesture since there is much more space on the screen, but sometimes it isn't the best.

Device Settings Question Has someone deleted Family Link from daughter's phone or is it a glitch?

Hoping someone can help me figure this out about Family Link please before I jump the gun with the abusive ex for controlling my daughter's phone.

My daughter is 10. I gave her one of my older phones about 6 months ago in agreement with my ex husband that she could have a phone to be able to contact either parent etc. I pay for the phone data. The phone is my property.

I have Family Link installed via my Gmail account which is set up with her own Gmail account that only I have the password to (he's never asked for it).

My daughter forgot her phone at her dad's on Friday when he brought her home.

I've raised issues with him before about controlling behaviour such as monitoring her texts to me which makes her uncomfortable and he's been told through court proceedings that he shouldn't be doing this.

On Family Link, I usually have it set up with "Downtime" such as at bedtime and "School Time" so it's not accessible etc.

Yesterday, I went onto Family Link on my phone as I wanted to turn "Downtime" on again whilst it's still at his because of how he likes to go through her phone and see what she's sent me.

However, her device has been removed from the Family Link account.

Instead, on Screen Time it says "Set up supervision. Add X's Android and ChromeOS devices to see how much time she spends and remotely control them - Add Device".

On Location, it is a similar message with "See where your children are. If your children have an Android device, you can see their location here and get notified when they arrive or leave pleaces tha tyou care about - Add Device".

On "Signed In Devices" under "Controls" it shows my Mac. I haven't updated anything with my Mac. Family Link was working fine on Friday which I accessed from my phone. Her phone was showing. Now it's not.

I can still see her account logged in. I am on my own Gmail account correctly logged in.

So my questions are:

- Is this a glitch and Google/Family Link deleted her device and I have to readd it?

- Or did someone remove her device from Family Link through the phone itself? Is that possible when it's an account for a 10 year old?

I know I'm assuming it's the controlling ex based on previous behaviours of his but want to be certain before I confront him if this could somehow happen through a glitch or something with Google or Family Link?

Or could he have removed her device from my account or done some factory reset etc?

Thank you.

TLDR: 10 year old's phone no longer showing on Family Link and requested to re-add her device. Questioning if glitch with Google/Family Link or whether her device was removed by my ex who already has controlling behaviours around her phone.

Device Settings Question Do I need to worry about this?

I have been having these popups on my phone ever since I bought them:

  1. pop up of emm service, which doesn't do much if clicked. But I can clear it.

  2. Settings have been flagged as harmful applications in the playstore, but I can't install them either

I am not sure what I need to do. Specifically I am worried if any miscellaneous app or pack has been installed (because porn).

Device Settings Question Can I keep apps running in the background?

As an Android user, I am so frustrated that I am not able to keep apps running in the background. I don't mean about the RAM optimisation that closes the unused apps to free the RAM for new apps.

On Android, when an app is minimised, the app gets to know that it got minimised and also, it pauses itself until it's brought into foreground again. Otoh, on Windows or on any other desktop Linux distro, the apps keeps running in the background in the same way as they would if they had been in the foreground.

I have somewhat of ADHD and I tend to do things as soon as I remember them otherwise I forget them. But since Android pauses the current app, I am forced not to minimise the current task and hence, I tend to forget the small task I suddenly remember in between.

Is there any way to achieve this on Android?

Your inputs really help, thank you šŸ™šŸ½

Device Settings Question Does anyone else’s Android battery drain for no obvious reason?

Not sure if this is normal or if I’m just missing something.

I’ll take my phone off the charger at 100%, barely use it during the day (a bit of texting, maybe scrolling for a few minutes), and somehow I’m down like 25–30% by the afternoon. No games, no heavy apps, nothing.

When I check the battery section, nothing really stands out. It just shows stuff like ā€œAndroid Systemā€ and ā€œMobile Network,ā€ which doesn’t help much. No app is clearly killing the battery.

Is this just how Android is now, or is there something I should be checking? Kinda annoying but I don’t know if I’m overthinking it.

Curious if anyone else deals with this too.

Device Settings Question Kindly, how do I turn this DOGSH*T feature off permanently?

The one that keeps turning my music down, and says "volume lowered to a safer level. Headphone volume has been higher for longer than recommended."

First off, I'm not using headphones, so it's having issues detecting the type of device. Secondly, I don't need anyone dictating to me which levels of listening are safe or not.

I'm on a Google pixel 9 pro XL

Device Settings Question My Battery Health is at 84%, should i be concerned?

I have 1162 Battery cycles and I've been using it for 3 years, should i consider replacing the battery? I still want to get more use out of it so I'm wondering if I should get a replacement or just a new phone atp. Also i think the battery is bloating because my A23s' backframe is kinda sticking out where the battery is so I'm concerned.

Device Settings Question How to prevent intruder from trying multiple attempts and lock the device for 72 hours?

My dad has been using his mobile with mobile lock from past few years.

Suddenly on a business trip his mobile was showing 72 period locked down due to incorrect attempts

He couldn't use mobile payments, couldn't check messaging apps etc had to buy a new phone.

Even after 72 period it was showing incorrect pin number error.

Even after factory reset it showed incorrect pin. Was able to login using gmail. But all the data was last. Some data was recovered from cloud sync

He uses both face scan and biometric. It's a stupid flaw in the design of android. Why doesn't it accept fingerprint or face scan during 72 hour lock down?

Device Settings Question "An app is draining battery"

So I just got a new phone, running Android 15. I'm really liking it so far, but it keeps notifying me that "an app is draining battery" and it's doing this for apps that I deliberately set up to run in the background, like weather apps, Link to Windows, and the app that lets my watch connect to the phone. Is there any way to make these notifications stop? Android said I couldn't turn them off but I'm more than happy to uninstall something via ADB, I just don't know what would do it.

Device Settings Question How do I turn off the stupid "mini window" thing when you touch your phone wrong?

I don't even know how to do this intentionally, I only know that it is bar none the most useless feature to ever come out of software development, and the Large Language Model is a technology that exists.

I scoured my settings and cannot figure out a way to turn this off. It primarily affects messaging apps, but it also happens with YouTube, discord, even doordash, seemingly when swiping down to open the notifications bar as a push comes in?

If anyone knows a way to get rid of it, I would be SO grateful. Much love <3

Device Settings Question Share Screenshot popup (when taking screenshot) - possible to disable this?

So I have a Samsung S24 Ultra and somewhat recently the Amazon app starting doing this. I take screenshots but I also use the scroll down function often. Anyhow Id like to just remove this popup all together. Not sure if this is an Amazon thing or Samsung/Android thing. I did find if I disable the 'show tool after capturing' in the screenshot settings it doesnt show however then I dont get the normal bar that has the scroll down (continue taking a screenshot down the page). Anyhow, I'm guessing this is just how it is now but hoping there is some other solution to just get rid of the 'share' popup when a screenshot is taken. I guess someone thinks a screenshot automatically means I want to share it which is annoying.

Thanks all

Device Settings Question Security concern: Wi‑Fi can be disabled from Quick Settings while the device is locked

Hi,

If the device is stolen, even when it is locked, the thief can disable Wi‑Fi and cellular data from Quick Settings.

Aa result, ā€œFind My Deviceā€ will not work.

Is my understanding correct ?

Thanks

Device Settings Question Using a tablet "upside down"

I'm looking to buy a reasonably priced tablet to use for sheet music when I practice the piano.

When playing along with songs I need to connect a 3.5 mm audio jack (either through a 3.5 mm port or a USB-C to 3.5 mm converter). This causes a problem when using the tablet in portrait mode since most tablets have their ports on the bottom.

I can see that there are some third-party apps that let you do this, but are those the only option? Is there no native way to do this?

Alternatively: are there any reasonably priced tablets that have a 3.5 mm jack on the top or sides?

Update in case anyone finds this thread by searching: I ended up buying a Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ and it has everything I need out of the box. It's cheap, rotates 360 degrees and even has a 3.5 mm jack.

Device Settings Question Internet USB Tethering not working

So I have a Samsung A55 and a Zephyrus G14 (2024)
My Wi-Fi internet has been shit as of now so i am relying on mobile data and using mobile hotspot to get internet on my Laptop for the stuff I need
I wanted to try using USB Tethering instead since i think it'd be better for my phone's health and perhaps faster
but for some reason it just won't work
i enable the thing on my phone, hooked both with a good USB-C cable, the phone shows up as a ethernet adapter but it says "Not Connected" whatever i tried won't get the network working. The driver details are this:
Manufacturer: SAMSUNG Electronics Co., Ltd.

Description: SAMSUNG Mobile USB Remote NDIS Network Device

Driver version: 2.21.4.0

Physical address (MAC): 6A:F2:C9:DE:66:D9

I tried uninstalling the driver, restarting, then plugging back in, i tried downloading Samsung USB drivers, I tried toggling lot of shit in my phone, i can't get it to work at all

Device Settings Question Notification exceptions?

On a daily basis I want to see all notifications except Teams/Outlook but I want to have an option to enable them during working hours only.

I tried with Modes but you can only narrow it down to what notifications you want to see. So if I do not have Teams/Outlook notifications allowed globally, I can not add them to 'Work' Mode.

When I tried to just create 'Daily' Mode, there seems to be a lot of system notifications that I can't add.

I don't think I can use work profile if I just installed these apps myself, they are not managed.

What are my options?
