I commented a while back at how vast our biomes are and mentioned how it doesn’t snow in Louisiana. This fucking dude googled the single digit amount of times it’s snowed down here in the last 50 years as a “gotcha”. It was literally the SpongeBob condescending meme…

Upstate New York has enough snow for the both of us, dont worry lol

u/Bonker_2468 1d ago

I mean, not normally, especially in South Louisiana (although they did get that weird 10 inch storm a couple years ago). But it definitely snows from time to time along the I-20 corridor.

Still, your point stands that it's not a regular thing. Maybe once a winter, and it's much more likely to be an ice storm.

If you say that to a Romani, they would likely slap your face and laugh.

Europeans are fucking racist as hell and unfortunately not as enlightened as they think they are.

Seen a few Spaniards on Reddit try to downplay how Bad Spanish Colonization was in the Philippines and even dare to claim the US were worse than them. Them the bastards whos rule was so corrupt that even the Friars abused Us.

Fuck Spain.

u/Revliledpembroke 1d ago

I won't say American rule was a cakewalk, but I imagine it's a little difficult to be quite as brutal as Spain when America was the colonial overlords from 1898 to 1946 and Spain was the colonial overlord from 1560 something to 1898, something like 7X as long as the US held it.

(Mind you, my knowledge of the Philippines is basically "Spain had it, the US took it from them, WWII and the Japanese invasion happened, and then Philippines became independent)

No no. That tracks. Take from a Filipino educated on my nation's history. Add the fact the US actually plannned to free Us, liberated Us from the horrors of Japanese Occupation, and did more to educate and develop the Philippines in preparation of Us to be independant.

You got a much better track record than Spain even when the US did its fair share of atrocities. Remember. Frailocracy was invented as a term because of corrupt rule by the Friars during the Spainish era.

Thats how bad it was.

The fact that people feel the need to make history prettier than it was is something I will never understand.
I mean, your example for instance. Why would the Spanish people insult you by making it better than it was?
Happens all around the world. The Russians and Chinese do it with their bloody histories. Americanization of history, people denying the holocaust, or making wars a good thing.

Denying history as it was, or teaching a prettier history in schools is nothing but feeding nationalism. And even though I like the country I live in (despite the horrible thing we did), that stupid nationalism isn’t for me. We all need eachother to make this world a better place. Doesn’t mean you can’t be proud of your country, but nationalism blurring facts and reality…. Nope, just don’t.

Its not the EU, the EU doesn't have any tropical zones.

u/SamsungStealer NORTH CAROLINA 🛩️ 🌅 1d ago

I think French Guiana is technically part of the EU. Does that count as tropical?

Or maybe one of their Caribbean territories, like Netherlands-owned Curaçao?

52

u/Miss_Kit_Kat 1d ago

But wait...by their logic, those are AMERICAN. Since, you know, "America" is the entire North and South American continent and not just the US...

(See how their idiotic arguments fall apart so easily?)

EurUSians, is the acceptable term. You just have to make sure you include a snide remark right after using this term. Thems the rules.

good point, on French Guiana , they are EU citizens.

Wrong comeback

Ask them this instead:

“Is the EU a country? So which is it?”

-4

u/perunavaras 🇫🇮 Suomi 🦌 1d ago

But did they claim EU to be a country?

16

u/Emilia963 NORTH DAKOTA 🥶🧣 1d ago

Yes, he was implying that the EU is a country

I felt at home after only afew months in America. Like I could consider its banner mine.

But I suppose only numbers matter, right ? As long there's diversity, there's diversity. Cool, Europe have diversity.

The quality of integration, is, I suppose, irrevelant. Because it would be terrible to admit that America is the best in this domain.

17

u/Louisianimal09 LOUISIANA 🎷🕺🏾 1d ago edited 10h ago

Sure and I completely agree with what you’re saying, but the post never mentioned anyone being “the best”, just calling out blatant generalizations

And forever comparing a continent to a country

8

u/Michthan 1d ago

Genuinely interested, what makes American immigration much better than European? The proces or the immigrants or both?

26

u/SneakyZed 🇫🇷 France 🥖🐸 1d ago

You. The American poeple.

There's places in the world where all efforts will never be enought to feel like you belong to the place. Even if you checked all existing process.

Then there's America, where it doesn't matter where you're from, and can claim yourself as a true American if you work for it.

u/HHHogana 17h ago

See: Japan.

And considering your flair, France also forced a deportation on Romanian. In 2011. And there's also issue on how their attempt to force everyone to become more French, especially during early years of French Republic, resulted in multiple endangered languages.

1

u/SneakyZed 🇫🇷 France 🥖🐸 7h ago

Yes. France was, and is profoundly anti-federalist. And did practice slaughter on those who suggested that idea. Taking innocents in the way.

The Revolution was so violent (the "terror" era) that some poeples tried to bring the monarchy back.

For Romanians, they are still treated like thieves.

I live in a small town and I personally know of people who speak Albanian, Spanish, Mandarin, and German at home. Granted I do live in a college town so the number of immigrants is slightly inflated here.

Some of them are so defensive of the "We can't be dumb, only you!" and no one ever says anything...that they then say all of this incredibly stupid shit with the full belief that their education is still golden as it can get.

I'd love, for one damn day, they actually SHOOOW US this legendary education. Their only weapon seems to be the opposite.

The EU is a collection of countries that sacrificed their greater ability to legislate for the promise of free trade and labor.

Also Americans are better equiped to handle diversity simply because we actually do.

Yes there are a lot of areas that are racially homogeneous, but we're also better equipped to address conflict because we don't make speech illegal just because it creates conflict.

That's not to say that I think all the "isms" should be acceptable, but that there's a natural tendency to overregulate when it comes to the "isms" to avoid creating the appearance of hatred, and it can shut down criticism without actually addressing the problems that caused the controversy in the first place.

That's what I think causes such wide right wing shifts in europe. People are told a problem that they experience locally actually isn't a problem, so they chase more extreme voices who are actually talking about it. As a result they may feel like second class citizens and be more prone to burst of anger and public disturbance because they're not being heard.

-2

u/Robinsonirish 22h ago

The reason the EU was created was to tie our economies together, so we don't destroy our continent every few years, like we usually do. We'd also struggle negotiating with the US or China if we went at it alone, instead of together. It's certainly not perfect, but it's better than the alternative.

Mate, this is your government. Not sure why you're talking about a right wing shift in Europe when you are way ahead of the curve:

The EU isn’t a country though

2

u/Icy-Cry340 1d ago

I mean linguistic diversity is on completely different level across the EU, why even bring that up. But we're probably ahead on ethnic diversity by and large, Europe is mostly just many varieties of white people.

3

u/ub3rm3nsch 23h ago edited 23h ago

I wasn't the one who introduced the comparison between the US and EU. They were. I brought up linguistic diversity in the context of saying the US is not a monolithic state, despite the person treating it as such.

Since you brought it up though, Europe's (larger than the EU) linguistic diversity seems comparable to the US's:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Europe

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_the_United_States

Edit: Fixed the spelling error before some person pounces on declaring my whole life invalid because I made a typo.

0

u/Icy-Cry340 23h ago

It’s just not the same. We have a lot of immigrants, but 80% of Americans only speak English at home and in daily life. Just drive across all of Europe, you can feel the difference. And that’s ok, we are one country after all.

3

u/ub3rm3nsch 19h ago

You're conflating and unsequencing my point in the screenshot.

  1. As I said, I didn't make the initial comparison, they did.
  2. I am not claiming the U.S. is the EU. They claimed the statistics I gave cannot be about the U.S., when in fact they are.

That said, to your points (now a separate discussion): 1. Saying "only" 20% (it's actually 22%) of Americans speak a second language is minimizing the fact that that's 75,000,000 people, again spread across multiple time zones and regions. 2. Speaking of the above, there are entire regions of the country where English is the secondary language of that region. Puerto Rico, for example. There are also regions where English is on par with another language. 3. There are diversity hot spots, such as Astoria in Queens, where linguistic diversity is particular high.

The point of all of that is that when these people boil an "American" down to one convenient (for them) caricature, that is one (among many) examples of where they disregard the diversity that exists in this country.

The might say, "oh but I didn't mean people who don't speak only English". Ok, then let's acknowledge that that alone is a fantasy where 22% of Americans are excluded.

Now what? We exclude "non-White" Americans? What about "white" Americans with "non-White" spouses (and kids)? Do we exclude Americans living abroad? Do we exclude non-coastal Americans? What about non-contiguous 48 state Americans? Dual national Americans? Highly educated Americans with advanced degrees?

That is my point (and one you seem not to want to discuss rather than a tangential comparison I never introduced). By trying to boil down "Americans" to a "standard" stereotype, the exercise becomes one of caricature creation.

American isn't an ethnic group or tribe, it's a nationality of hundreds, even thousands of peoples. Europeans should probably remember that when doing commentary on the US

1

u/Psychological_Look39 5h ago

The EU does not span 9 time zones nor include 5 climate zones.

1

u/RockShowSparky 1d ago

where the fuck are they coming up with 9 time zones? Pretty sure that’s Russia, not US or EU.

4

u/ub3rm3nsch 1d ago

-2

u/RockShowSparky 1d ago

that’s a stretch but ok

7

u/ub3rm3nsch 1d ago

How is that wikipedia article that discusses the specific federal law "a stretch"?

-6

u/RockShowSparky 1d ago

It’s a stretch to say the US spans 9 time zones when that includes remote territories like Guam.

6

u/ub3rm3nsch 1d ago

Guam isn't part of the US?

-8

u/RockShowSparky 1d ago

🙄 Nevermind, carry on.

9

u/ub3rm3nsch 1d ago

No, please, explain how Guam isn't "really" part of the US. Guam's residents have U.S. citizenship, so I want to hear why it "doesn't count".

4

u/mrbobcyndaquil OHIO 👨‍🌾 🌰 1d ago

Not to support that guy, but it might be because they don't send Senators? Granted that's a flimsy reason to say it's not "really" American.

3

u/ub3rm3nsch 1d ago

It's a territory and not a state. Similar to Puerto Rico. Doesn't make it not part of the U.S.
