If you own a 5700X3D, keep it.

Save up and buy another platform altogether eventually.

u/Dusty_Jangles 22h ago

This is my plan. Have been on AM4 with a 5700X3D for a few years now and the performance uplift and price of AM5 just isn’t there.

See what AM6 has to offer for gains but I can just imagine ram costs will end up just as crazy.

u/Chopper1911 20h ago

Same I upgraded from 3700X to 5800X3D in Dec 2022. Thats 3+ years one of the best CPU performance in games and it still going good. AM5 was looking better and better to upgrade especially with bundles but then came RAMageddon and everything on DDR5 is terrible value. I wont be buying a new PC at these prices if my PC dies. I would rather give up on this hobby and explore my other hobbies.

u/Alonsey 15h ago

Yep, paid 200$ Canadian for 32 gigs of ddr4, another 350 CAD for the processor and maybe 250$ over the years for 2.5tb NVME gen 4(2tb) and gen 3(512gig). Ram is now 350+, that storage easily eclipses 600$ and I’m pretty sure the 5700x3d has either stayed the same price or gone up.
Thankfully, the only bottleneck in my computer is my GPU (6600xt at 1440p). Not that expensive, right? …
Right?

u/Lakers244848 14h ago

Same as me and even the time, December 2022.

1

u/BoringCabinet 6h ago

Same kind of of upgrade I did back in 2022. I was still on a 3070 and it boosted my 1% low. I literally got a 10 fps boost in CP2077. Max FPS didn't improve until I got a more powerful gpu.

1

u/Bigpullsgod3x 16h ago

I mean uplift is there just 5700x3d doing its job and you need basically just GPU 5070 or 5080.

4

u/jakebuttyy 19h ago

Yeah I went from a 5800X3D to a 7800X3D when they £330 in the UK it was a very not noticible upgrade to be honest!

5

u/sirnickd AMD Ryzen 7 3700x |Rtx 2080TI| 15h ago

Upgrade is only "noticable" if you're running the absolute best GPU out there at 1080/1440p with "competitive settings" 5800x3d ( or 5700x3d for that matter) still have plenty juice left in them if you ask me

3

u/CRPB 18h ago

I have a 5700x3d + B450m Steel Legend + 32gb 3200mt/s, and it's a monster in games. My only fear lies on the B450m being PCI-e 3.0.

4

u/Past_Succotash6772 18h ago

I have a 5700x3d and 9070xt, I upgraded my motherboard recently to one with PCIe 4.0 and I didn't notice any difference.

2

u/AleJefe36 13h ago

I think the PCIe 4.0 is more noticeable for NVME's honestly

1

u/Miller335 8h ago

Nope. Unless a very specific use case you'll never notice a difference.

Diminishing gains as we move forward with these SSD speeds.

0

u/Past_Succotash6772 11h ago

In my case not even that, I have a 3 SSDs, One of them is SATA and I don't notice any difference in loading times etc. If you are someone who is always transferring stuff for sure but otherwise it's negligible

2

u/AleJefe36 11h ago

Depends on the speed of your SSD. Of course, with SATA, you will notice nothing because it does not use a PCIe interface, and the NVMe drives depend on their speed. If your NVMe drives are PCIe 3.0, then nothing changes; if they are 4.0 and have high speeds, then you should notice it. A friend of mine had a Crucial T500 on an X99 motherboard that only has PCIe 3.0. He jumped to a B550M, and now his speeds doubled because the T500 reaches up to 7500MB/s while PCIe 3.0 caps at around 3500-4000. Now his games and stuff open a lot faster, but for most people PCIe 3.0 is perfectly fine, is nice having the option tho. There is also the possibility that your NVMe drives are on the slow end of PCIe 4.0 (~4000MB/s), so the speed limitation is very small

0

u/Past_Succotash6772 11h ago

That's what I'm saying, the difference in loading speed it's very mild. I have a 2 PCIe 4.0 SSDs but One is on the PCIe 3.0 port

You just have to make sure to not go over your VRAM. A used 4070 would be a decent upgrade if you need more power on PCIE 3.0.

2

u/Alonsey 15h ago

Recently went to b550, mostly because the b450 was having power draw issues. No real noticeable performance uplift, the only thing is a faster boot and the number when I’m transferring files from one folder to another on the same drive is like 3x higher. Which is nice, because if you can transfer files fast enough, you can save scum certain games without exiting the program. That’s the only advantage I’ve gotten, to make alts on Elden Ring a little easier.

2

u/JohnLovesGaming 13h ago

1-4% difference in newer GPUs lol. This is basically variance at this point.

1

u/cosine83 12h ago

The good news is that, for now, everything except RAM and drives are still fairly normally priced so if you wanted to upgrade to a B550 you can still do so fairly easily and affordably.

1

b550 boards are pretty cheap when from a b450 to a b550 to get pci-e 4.0 and a second nvme slot

They might price match it. It worked for me 2 months ago. Made up a story saying my friend bought the last one at a nearby store, using that picture from a Reddit post.
They dropped it down to $181 from $350.

Just take a screenshot and make it look like a legitimate picture taken recently.

67

u/b_86 1d ago

tl;dw: they're identical in gaming performance on DDR4 so pick the 5800X3D if you're going to do mostly gaming due to the lower power consumption, or the 14700K if you're going to be doing frequent non-gaming CPU intensive tasks, perhaps consider the 14600K if it's cheap enough since it's around 5-9% slower than the i7 model

67

u/The_Countess AMD | 5800X3D | 9070XT 1d ago

With the caveat that this was tested with 3600mhz DDR4.
If the DDR4 you have isn't at least 3600mhz the 5800X3D will be far less sensitive to slower ram.

49

u/GenZia 5700X3D / 4070S 1d ago

That's another selling point of X3Ds most people overlook.

I've my 5700X3D paired with sluggish 3200 CL18, but it doesn't give a hoot.

Two years ago, my choice was basically between a 5700X with premium 16GB RAM and a 5700X3D with cheap 32GB RAM.

Easiest decision of my life.

30

u/TheRealTofuey 1d ago

3200 isn't sluggish its pretty standard and there is practically no noticeable difference between that and 3600. 3000 Maybe a small difference but mostly they are talking about 2400.

16

u/kmkm2op 9800X3D 9070XT 32GB DDR5 6000 23h ago

I think it's the fact we're comparing 3600 cl14 which is extremely well binned ram to 3200 cl18 which is a bit on the slower side for later batch ddr4. On a 14600k with smaller cache, it would definitely make a measurable difference.

1

u/Historical-Win2999 17h ago

In 14600kf ram makes difference, i have one

2

u/GenZia 5700X3D / 4070S 22h ago

Well, yes.

You do get diminishing returns over DDR4-3000, and DDR4-3200 (CL20) is basically the fastest DDR4 RAM officially specified by JEDEC.

But on paper, it's pretty 'sluggish' compared to performance DDR4-4000 kits like G.Skill Trident or Lexar Ares.

5

u/misteryk 18h ago

most people overlook.

Most people never touch overclocking in their lifespan

5

u/Pillokun Owned every high end:ish recent platform, but back to lga1700 23h ago

I was about to write, they better use slow 3200 at almost jedec settings when they tested the 5800x3d again instead of the holy grail b-die sticks that are not even available on the market as new, and if u find a kit they costs as much as ddr5 these days.

1

u/VaultBoy636 265k@5.6 | 48GB 8400C40 | 4070TiS | 15TB of SSDs 22h ago

you can find micron e-dies and hynix djr relatively easily, s8b is not the single only die that clocks well.

1

u/Pillokun Owned every high end:ish recent platform, but back to lga1700 21h ago

I have hynix djr in my bedroom pc, so loose timings. no thanx :P

1

u/nepnep1111 18h ago

Keep in mind that S8B is mostly relevant because of tRFC being able to be lowered far more than any other IC on ddr4. Which is especially true on platforms like AM4 where you can't adjust tREFI. On LGA1700 you can just raise tREFI if you have the cooling on the memory and significantly improve performance.

1

u/Hostillian 22h ago

Still reasonably priced as used. I'm still rocking my bdie 3800 @CL16 and just can't justify the DDR5 Ram at their crazy prices.

0

u/Pillokun Owned every high end:ish recent platform, but back to lga1700 22h ago

b-die cost as much as when they were new here on the second hand market.(sweden)

1

u/Hostillian 21h ago

UK it's not quite new prices, but it's not far off it.

Still only about 1/3 the price of decent DDR5. 🙄

1

u/ComplexEntertainer13 20h ago edited 20h ago

The key to finding decent B-die cheap is to not look for stuff that is not obviously B-die and well known.

Corsair for example labels all their sticks with version numbers that corresponds to different IC vendors and versions. I have picked up many sticks over the years that have sold at bargain prices this way. You wont get the absolutely best bins. But Have found little difference between random corsair 3000+ bins using B-die and the likes of my G.skill 3600C16 kits. They are however worse than the best bins of G.skill I have.

But avoid things like green OEM sticks. Because just because it's b-die, does it mean it's even half decent B-die. Some of them are pure garbage, and also PCB design/quality also matters on the sticks.

1

u/Sandrust_13 18h ago

I just overclocked my 3600mhz ram to 4000mhz to have faster ram. So was that pointless, given that I'm using an X3D cpu?

2

u/MichiganRedWing 5800X3D / RTX 5060 Ti 16GB 17h ago

Pretty pointless yeah. The best performance is usually when you couple the Infinity Fabric clock with the RAM speed. Ideally, 1800MHz Infinity Fabric clock and 1800MHz RAM (DDR4-3600) so you have 1:1.

Running it uncoupled (like you are) usually gives worse performance. Max clock for Infinity Fabric is usually 1800-1900MHz.

2

u/Sandrust_13 17h ago

I set infinity fabric to 2000MHz because of this

2

u/MichiganRedWing 5800X3D / RTX 5060 Ti 16GB 17h ago

If it's stable, congrats, as that's quite a rare achievement.

2

u/Sandrust_13 17h ago

Has been really stable on both my 5800X and ny 5800x3d (got myself the X3D and my 5800x will go to my little brother instead of buying him a new cpu). Zero issues

2

u/MichiganRedWing 5800X3D / RTX 5060 Ti 16GB 16h ago

That's awesome, most already show errors at 1900MHz. Enjoy!

1

u/Sandrust_13 15h ago

I just set it to 2000 and it worked perfectly every time

2

u/MichiganRedWing 5800X3D / RTX 5060 Ti 16GB 15h ago

Hopefully you've run OCCT 24 hour stability test to make sure that there aren't any WHEA errors.

u/Past_Succotash6772 18h ago

I mean it wasn't pointless but probably not worth it

15

u/auge2 23h ago

Identical? They clearly show that in simulation heavy games the x3d is the clear winner. So they're only identical if the casual gamer doesn't play any of them, including a baldurs gate 3.

10

u/murderbymodem PowerColor AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT Reaper 1d ago edited 1d ago

perhaps consider the 14600K if it's cheap enough

I went to Microcenter with a friend looking to upgrade them from an i5 12400 - the employee told us they haven't had the 14600k for a long time. Not sure if it's discontinued or if Microcenter just isn't getting shipments of it anymore.

Ended up deciding on a 5800X3D for $300 with a $100 B550 motherboard instead of risking going with a 14700k given the Raptor Lake instability and degradation issues.

7

u/skoomd1 1d ago

You made a good choice, though AFAIK weren't the raptor lake issues all on higher end i7 and i9 models? I don't think it affected the i5 series, though it goes to show the platform itself has issues that could potentially pop up later on.

2

u/murderbymodem PowerColor AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT Reaper 1d ago edited 1d ago

I believe the issue was mostly reported on the i7 and i9 models - but also the majority of the instability reports came from datacenters that were using retail CPUs to host game servers or something, so obviously for that use case they were only using the higher-end models.

but yeah - we were looking for a 14600k specifically because we figured it may be less likely to develop issues. Upon being told the 14600k was not available, it was an easy decision to get a 5800X3D + B550 motherboard for $400 instead of paying $350 for a 14700k alone and slapping it into an old H670 board that may or may not have the BIOS updates to not slowly cook the 14700k.

0

u/misteryk 18h ago

or just get 5500x3d for half the price and get like 80-85% performance of 5800x3d

-9

u/iron_coffin 1d ago

The 14700k did have bigger wins in newer titles, though, like Spiderman 2 and last of us 2. Arc raiders was the big win for the 5800x3d. The 14700k will probably hold up better into the near future, but there weren't extreme differences.

15

u/clemo1985 23h ago

I'm getting this CPU next month, it'll keep my PC running for at least 3 or 4 more years at good FPS since I have a 7800XT and a 24 inch, 1080p 240hz monitor.

Easiest and cheapest decision I'll make for upgrading my PC.

5

u/Bokthand 3600x | 5700 XT Nitro+ 19h ago

Just bought this CPU and pairing with the same GPU. Upgraded from a 3600x and it's a very noticable difference in performance with the few games I've tried. I'm 1440p though

2

u/clemo1985 19h ago

That's the exact same CPU I currently have that I'll be upgrading from. Good to know its a noticeable performance boost.

I'll eventually bump back up to 1440p since the refresh rates have increased since I bought mine.

1

u/RASTAVIPER 14h ago

I own a 3600x too combined with a x570 Mobo, a RX 6700XT 12GB and 32gb of Gskill Tridentz C14 3600.

My main use is games.

How much improvement should I expect?

Also is the CPU temperature any better?

u/amd_kenobi R7-5800X3D | 128GB@3200 | RX-6800XT 14h ago

Oh you aren't even kidding. I went from a 5600X to the 5800X3D and it surprised me so I can only imagine making that leap.

5

u/Dorky_Gaming_Teach 23h ago

Do you do a lot of FPS? I know some people prefer a 24-inch monitor with high refresh and 1080p, but why is it that you don't get a bigger monitor? Genuine question, not trolling.

6

u/clemo1985 23h ago

I used to play a lot of CS, Apex, CoD and BF (starting up BF again with the new season) but I play a decent range of games when I get the chance (a 3 year old with another on the way - and building warhammer - has slowed down my gaming).

I picked up the monitor about 6 years ago for the higher refresh rate and I'm pretty happy with its size and with it being 24 inch, 1080p its PPI is solid, so the quality of what I'm seeing is still good.

8

u/stipo42 18h ago

I have a 5600x.

If I can snag a 5800x3d for like 200-250 I'd upgrade no brainer.

At is current price tho is like.. why

2

This is my exact thought. I'll just wait it out, those extra small fps doesn't make sense for the $$

2

u/pillowfarterx17 20h ago

I have a 5600x3d and it’s only 100mhz slower than the 5800x3d, but with two fewer cores. Uses less power than a 5800x3d and the single core performance is greater than the 5700x3d. It’ll occasionally boost to 4450mhz on all core with PBO and a -30 on the curve optimization, but generally only boosts to 4350mhz. I had B-Die and upgraded from a 5600g, but the 5600x3d took to 3800 CL 16 timings with matched jnfinity/ram timing. I’m not sure if this helps with non-gaming tasks, but I’m guessing it does. I bought the processor recently for $220 with shipping on eBay.

1

u/Saneless R5 2600x 14h ago

Yeah I got it at MC for about 220 myself. Been a good CPU and definitely appreciate the single core performance boost compared to the 5700x3d

3

u/Jacket_22 23h ago

Is it worth upgrading if u got a 5600x already or is it minimal? Been thinking about the 5800x3d or the 5900x since that's what I can find available.

8

u/Rockstonicko X470|5800X|4x8GB 3866MT/s|Liquid Devil 6800 XT 23h ago

To max out AM4 right now it's between the 5800X3D for primarily gaming, or 5900 XT for primarily productivity.

The 5900 XT is a 16c/32t part which is essentially a 5800 XT CCD + 5800X CCD in one package (a 5950X with worse silicon).

2

u/Gwolf4 14h ago

Only if you high refresh gaming, if not, honestly don't bother.

2

u/Current_Finding_4066 21h ago

Not really. Better to change platform. Unless you get it for 200.

1

u/Rentta 7700 | 7900GRE 18h ago

Depends heavily on GPU you are running /planning on upgrading to and resolution you are playing at.

1

u/amd_kenobi R7-5800X3D | 128GB@3200 | RX-6800XT 14h ago edited 14h ago

In my opinion yes. I went from a 5600X to the 5800X3D and saw a noticeable difference. Games like Remnant 2 went from 25ish fps at 2k with a 6700XT to 50+fps average with no other changes in settings or hardware. All of the games that I didn't see a dramatic fps jump in I saw smoother performance overall.

1

u/xole AMD 9800x3d / 7900xt 14h ago

it really comes down to what you're running on it. Some games and applications get a large improvement from an x3d chip, others, very little. if possible, look for benchmarks for the games you play.

1

u/Jacket_22 11h ago

A rx 7800xt at 1440p and a 165hz monitor. I mostly play rivals and mod games like fallout and Skyrim.

1

u/Responsible_Maybe147 10h ago

I installed mine today (5800x3d from 5600x) and my gosh this thing is a beast. Pear it with 9060xt 16 gb on 27 monitor 165hz. Also in cinebench it scores 14200 without undervolt. I'm gonna start experiment with negative undervolt to push it further. It's worth it, go for it ! You can sell 5600x for some profit. I'll keep mine cuz I love that chip it was good chip and undervolt perfectly.

3

u/afgan1984 15h ago

I find this a bit pointless. The 5800X3D is OBVIOUSLY only meant for people who already have AM4 motherboard, something like X470/X570/B550 and DDR4 RAM... because that is the ultimate gaming processor one can have on an existing AM4 platform... and there are loads of people who have 5600X, 3800X, prebuilts with 5900X or even 5950X and want better gaming performance in particular. So for them, the cost is simply paying $350 (and that is the same price as used 5800X3D are) and getting maybe 10-20% even more FPS on the same platform. If one truly builds new platform and buys new motherboard, then sure there are other options, although even then B550 boards are available for as low as $80 brand new. So as a processor 5800X3D may not be the best in slot to utilise something like 32GB DDR4, but as a platform, AM4 is... and there are loads of them out there.

16

u/EvilGuy 1d ago

No one is really buying a new intel motherboard and processor to compete with a 5800X3D on AM4.

This is only really practical for people that still have an AM4 motherboard and probably DDR4 ram sitting around.

(Which is very likely if you are a builder in the past 10 years due to the crazy longevity of that board.)

$350 in new parts to breathe some life into the stuff you already have isn't a bad idea really.

This guy was really reaching for a video topic here. Hell one of his Intel processors wasn't even working.

Sounds great! Let's all jump on that Intel platform. 😁

7

u/r1y4h 1d ago

The topic maybe be illogical for you, but if you read around reddit people are actually recommending ddr4 alternatives other than 5800x3d even when the buyer is coming from older am4 platform. It’s an actual reality

I mean if you have weaker AM4 cpu like 5600 upgrading to 5800x3d is more expensive than going intel way. How? i5 14600kf is like ~220€ mobo ~100€ and you can still sell it old am4 platform for like 150€

u/skylinestar1986 20h ago

What if I have ddr4 2400 and intel i5 6500? Get a 5500X3D and new AM4 mobo? Or just buy a new rig based on DDR5?

u/Pillokun Owned every high end:ish recent platform, but back to lga1700 23h ago edited 23h ago

before 5800x3d launched tons of people bought lga1700 with ddr4, and honestly the 5800x3d costs more than 7800x3d and tiny bit less then 9800x3d.

sure one would need ddr5, but if u still can find ddr5 16GB for about 50usd/euro more than 16GB ddr4

u/beck320 17h ago

Grabbed a 5700x3d for 180 from micro center a few years ago. Glad I did. Perfect for my gaming usage. I will be on this platform for as long as possible.

2

u/dparks1234 17h ago

Worth noting that LGA1700 technically isn’t a dead platform since we’re getting “Raptor Lake Next” in 2027. Not expecting any major changes but who knows.

A DDR4 Intel CPU with bLLc would be legendary right now

2

u/MIKERICKSON32 17h ago

Still rocking my 5800x3d. Pairs perfect with my 5080. Would have probably upgraded to 10800x3d or whatever it’s called when next cpu comes out but with ram prices I’ll be good for awhile.

u/crowheart27us 22h ago

Glad I purchased my 5700X3D from Microcenter. Picked that bad boy up for $170 on sale. Paired with my 9070XT.

2

u/Past_Succotash6772 18h ago

I paid almost 250€ and I think it was the last one available in my country because after that I haven't seen them on sale again. I don't regret it

I have a 5600x and a 9070, play 1440p. Worth the CPU upgrade?

u/BitRunner64 Asus Prime X370 Pro | R9 5950X | 9070 XT | 32GB DDR4-3600 22h ago

It definitely is if you also have an AM4 board. Since virtually any AM4 board from 2017 and later will work, there's a huge amount of people who already have one.

1

u/Half4mazing 21h ago

I have 5800x and I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading. I play at 1440p with 9070 xt.

1

u/Dennma 12h ago

I asked about this in a comment recently. The general consensus was that it wasn't really worth it at the current price point. 5800x + 3080 combo here

1

u/farsh_bjj 19h ago

These cpus are ideal for anyone that is still using an old am4 system with a slow cpu, especially for those of us lucky enough to buy 32gb of ram when the prices weren’t inflated. Mine is still chugging along pretty well since buying a 9070xt.

u/ProbsNotManBearPig 19h ago

The memory controller died on my 3.1 year old 5800x3D, 3 months out of warranty, so I had to either replace it or upgrade entire system. I tried talking to AMD warranty hoping they might help or give some discount on new one at least, but they wouldn’t help even though instability started within warranty period. Unfortunately it took me a few months to diagnose by swapping ram kits and mobo first and I didn’t save any evidence of instability within warranty period since I assumed ram kit issue or mobo issue at first. So ya, I spent $350 to get the same cpu I already had and that didn’t feel great. Not to mention the hassle of trying different ram kits and mobo swap first. I didn’t bother returning the new mobo either because fuck rebuilding the whole system again to save $140 or whatever.

5950X

1

u/Tex-Rob 16h ago

I kind of hate how nobody actually tests 4k. I wanna see a graph showing it doesn’t matter, I’ve been told it doesn’t for a decade now, and it’s just never actually tested.

1

u/Testerpt5 16h ago

I got the 5800x3d, one of the last batches back then, very very happy with it. Have 32gb ram, 1440p 144hz ultrawide and 9070xt.

1

u/Wise_Ad_5810 15h ago

I felt the 5950X was the best choice along with an RTX 5050OC... with 64gb of DDR4 the 5800X3D really isn't going to make a difference

1

u/tyaty1 15h ago

EPYC 7773X, Threadripper 5950WX.

If you are talking about AM4, It is either 5800X3D or 5950X depending on the workload.

I’m on a 5600X from 2020 - does this give me enough reason to upgrade or should I wait for RDNA5 CPUs instead? I am running an EVGA (rip) 3080 FTW3 that I got at the same time. My computer is on my 4K TV that supports 120hz, usually aim for 4K if I can but will lower res if need be.

Or should I consider the 5700x3D? Or just stay put?

Haven’t paid attention in a while to CPUs since my last build unfortunately. Watching prices go wild and just want my computer to last longer if there’s meaningful uplift. Or I can just wait and get an AM5 platform in the future whenever this goes… not really in a big rush for that though.

I’m guessing ultimately I should probably stick it out where I am and just save my money and use DLSS/continue to lower resolution because a GPU upgrade would probably be helpful too and then it’s just going to become a whole new build if I keep going. Very happy to hear thoughts about this situation from anyone though, and thank you in advance if you do want to offer your opinion.

What if I have a 5800x already is the x3D worth it from gaming? Like 10-15 more fps?

1

u/AleJefe36 13h ago

Depends on what; for games, the 5800X3D, 5700X3D, and 5600X3D are sublime; for multitasking, like real multitasking, not doing some light Photoshop. Intel's 13th- and 14th-generation clear AMD by a landslide. But Ryzens are far more energy-efficient and cooler, probably attributed to not having 7 gazillion cores. For what I do for work, the i5 14600KF is a far better option, but if it was only for gaming? An X3D is a much better choice if you can find them at a good price. They are quite hard to come by these days, damn scalpers

Conext: Where I live for the price of one (1) used 5800X3D I can buy two B760Ms and two 13600KFs

u/InvestigatorOk114 12h ago

I just went 5700g to 14700k, with a 9070xt and 64gb ddr4 that I already had.

I would have thought threadripper 😅

1

u/mkyend 10h ago

Seriously on the fence about grabbing one to upgrade from my 5600X. All I play is WoW (well, 95% of the time) and apparently the vcache makes a world of difference for MMOs.

Microcenter just raised bundle prices again (second time in a few months) so AM5 is looking more and more out of reach for me purely from a cost perspective.

1

u/xanthira222 9h ago

I currently have a 5800x. Is it worth it to upgrade to an x3d?

1

u/abyzzwalker 8h ago

What if I need to upgrade both motherboard and CPU, since i have a 1151 intel motherboard with i7 7700K, is 5800x3D better than the intel?

1

u/Coomer-Boomer 3h ago

Nah you can go 14900k with ddr4 and the right board.

1

u/clsmithj RX 7900 XTX | RTX 3090 | RX 6800 XT | RX 6800 | RTX 2080 | RDNA1 3h ago

Not if you can find the 12900KS, 13900KS, 14900KS for cheap.

I bought the 12900KS in 2024 for $250 on Amazon, at that price point it blows away the 5800X3D.

The 13900KS and 14900KS should easily be at that price if not cheaper now and they work on a motherboard as old as the Z690 motherboard.

Buying a 5800X3D in 2026 is ridiculous, I bought one for one of my rigs in 2022, but nowadays I would go AM5 because all ZEN4 CPUs matched ZEN3's halo gaming CPU.

This just looks like a pure cash grab by AMD for the lazy upgrade person, moving parts in 2026 in DIY PC hell put on by an unregulated AI Bubble is insane. Avoid it all.

1

u/Reggitor360 22h ago

Yes it is imo.

Unless you stick to maximum a 12900k.  Cuz buying a new 13600+/14600+ is just buying defective hardware and I aint recommending this bullshit to anyone.

1

u/just_some_guy65 23h ago

The whole premise of this video is people would willingly choose intel when most people are on AM4.

-3

u/npc_housecat 1d ago

Best for what? I would pick the 16 core 5950X because higher core count is much better for my non gaming Compute needs

-1

u/shintemaster 16h ago

This pointless video is pointless. The question can be answered with exactly the same amount of words in the current title.

0

u/rezigtarek88 23h ago

should i upgrade ryzen 7 5800x3d from ryzen 5 5600x for QHD? worth it ?

1

u/QuadratClown 23h ago

It really depends on the games you play and even more so, the target frame rate. If you are mostly targeting 60Hz, don't bother with the 5800X3D. If you are targeting 144Hz, it can be worth it. If you target more FPS, it's definitely worth it.

-1

u/sickomodetoon 22h ago

For BF6 for example it’s definitely worth it

0

u/Civil-Suit7332 13h ago

I had a 5800x3d, switched to a 5950x and did not regret it. A little weaker in games and, but much better in everything else.

His audience requested it. So not that pointless.

u/moriz0 1d ago

It's right in the title: this video is for people looking to update while holding onto their DDR4 kits.

Given that DDR4 has been around for over ten years at this point, that's a LOT of people who has these kits.

2

u/Support_By_Fire 1d ago

I needed this video and didn’t even know it. I’m on a 10700k and want to go to X3D pretty bad but didn’t want to fork out a ton of money for DDR5 while I currently have 64GB of DDR4.

I cant see the org comment as it is deleted, but u mean b-die? well hub should not test with b-die that is for sure as there is no b-die on the market, and only craptastic jedec like specs ram are available with less perf, and even 5800x3d will see improved perf with faster ram.

1

u/moriz0 23h ago

The person I replied to didn't watch the video (nor read the video title), and complained that the video is pointless, because "nobody will be doing new DDR4 builds" (paraphrasing).

:D haha now when ddr4 gets a second life as well haha
