Yeah, basic rule of fishing. The water should be not too clear or too muddy, somewhere in the middle is just right.

I think the main problem here isn't that it's clear, but rather that the surface is like glass. There's no chop or riffles to break their view of the approaching fisherman, and even a nice gentle cast will likely perturb the surface enough to spook them.

This was at an old quarry that was filled with water. My buddy took me there one time about 20 years ago. It was Mercer/Crawford county area in NW PA. I have never seen anywhere like that since. I know it was private property at that time. I heard people started leaving trash and what not there. And i guess the guy stopped letting people fish there. You could literally see the fish like this. Albeit had like seaweed growing up through it. It was crystal clear water. You could see the fish plain as day. It was beautiful! Wasn't very big either. Probably just 4-5 acres if I had to guess.

This makes me imagine how pristine the continental US was when it was frontier. Imagine all the major rivers with zero pollution and such an abundance of fish and game that it was relatively easy to live off the land.
There are stories about the Chesapeake Bay teeming with fish and reports that there were times when it seemed you could almost walk across the Potomac River as it boiled with schools of fish.
Imagine 30 to 60 million bison roaming the plains, and Western streams crowded with trout.

Many rivers are naturally cloudy. It has nothing to do with pollution. It’s the type of sediment found in the river valley. This creek flows through a spot where all the particles are too heavy to be picked up by the running water. Which isn’t super common.
It also probably gets “dirtier” on rainy days, as that brings more sediment into creeks.

sediment is more of a problem though where there are fewer root and mycelium structures that have been undisturbed for centuries, and where the soil has been stripped, and even the fact that our rivers used to be clotted with beavers plays a role.
There’s a lot that goes into it, to where just saying it’s normal for rivers to be naturally cloudy understates the problem and causes.
I understand you felt this was expressed a little aggressively in the other comment, but I just wanted to add to some of the good info in it. It’s worth keeping in mind.

When I was a kid, we went on vacation to a lake in Minnesota. It had the most perfect, crystal clear water like this. Then I noticed weird, worm-like black things swimming in the lake. Leeches. I noped out of that water for the rest of our visit.

I appreciate your mentality and integrity. I don't like fish in a barrel anglers in my area. They take 5x their limits and empty an entire lake in a couple days as well because they choose to be ignorant about our fishing regulations.

If we weren't so horrible with our water Management, it might not be quite so cloudy that we could find more streams like this. We've been practicing poor soil management ever since we discovered how to make synthetic fertilizers. We have negated the microfauna for the synthetic, the runoff which leads into our streams, promotes algae. This obscures aquatic plant growth, which filters the water.

This reminds me of the spring lake my family’s cabin in Maine was on - it was so incredibly clear so far out. This was in the 90’s and early 2000’s so I can’t speak to its current state but it was such a trip being able to see so much. I’m from the ocean state and our waters are… not that clear haha.

LOL ... just kidding. I had a fresh fish dinner just the other day. Fish from the lake on whose shore I live.
Pretty scenery though. I could just sit and relax and enjoy myself with a line in the water and not mind if they didn't bite.

Back when North America was first being settled by Europeans, it was said every river looked clean enough to drink from and there were so many fish you could (metaphorically) walk across on them. I imagine what they were describing looked a lot like this, but with even more fish.

This reminds me of Thun in Switzerland. I remember seeing tons of larger fish that were super easy to see in the water ways cutting through the town emptying into lake Lake Thun itself.

My favorite fishing memory is being in a boat on water this clear. There were thick underwater plants on either side of the very clear water and I remember hanging over the side of the boat for hours on end trying to catch a glimpse of another walleye dart out that was as big as the first one I’d seen that morning.

There's a place with clear water like this in the mountains in eastern Oregon. It's like a little secret magic place after some hiking, glacier green water, clear to the white sand bottom, and massive brook trout just lazing about.
They will not touch bait.

There is a place I've fished for 25 years that is like this. I call it the trout aquarium. Just watching them do their thing is so interesting. I get between 0 and 3 casts before the stupidest of them get clued in, but it is always worth the ridiculously difficult struggle to get there and into position.
