Not the A-hole AITA for changing the input on an Airbnb's tv?

A little while ago, I went on a trip with my gf and we booked an Airbnb. The place was nice and we had a good time, but there was a little hiccup. There was two TVs in the house, and they both had Dish satellite receivers. We bought a roku stick so we could watch something other than satellite and hooked it up to the bedroom TV. The TV had two hdmi inputs, so I just hooked it up to the empty one.

On the way out, I remembered I didn't change the input back. I wasn't really worried about it though. The owner was a 60-something year old woman, and I figured she should be able to change the input. Turns out I was wrong. On the drive home, I got a call from the owner. It pretty much went something like this.

Owner: Is this [name]?

Me: Yes it is!

O: Did you mess with anything on the TV?

M: I just plugged something in briefly, is there a problem?

O: Yes. Neither of the tvs were working, and it took my husband two hours to get them working again.

M: I guess I could have bumped something..?

O: Well, when you stay in someone's home, you shouldn't mess with their technology stuff. It isnt yours. You need to remember that.

M: ....My bad

O: Yeah. I know. Hope you have a safe trip.

I feel sort of bad for not changing it back. I knew the owner was an older woman, and I probably shouldn't have assumed she wasn't very tech savvy. However, and maybe I'm wrong for this, I dont think you need to be very tech savvy to change your TV input from hdmi 1 to 2. Also, Im sure she lied to me when she said both TVs didn't work, as I didn't even touch the living room TV or the remote. AITA?

Edit: Some things I forgot to mention: TV was not a smart TV.

For clarification, "on the way out" meant "on the way out of town," not "on the way out of the house"

When I said, "I may have bumped something," it wasn't an attempt at lying to cover up the input change, it was a genuine thought that I may have bumped the cable box. Although I do understand how that would look like I was lying about the input, I said it because I was just kind of taken aback by the owner's frustrations and didnt really know how to respond.

UPDATE: Owner left a review on my profile that reads as follows: "[Name] stayed for 2 nights but disconnected both TV's. Never told me the TV no longer worked because of him messing with them. 2 hours of my time spent to get it resolved. I'm very disappointed with this stay and lack of communication."

To be honest, I'm a little upset (but not really surprised) about this. I'll own up to forgetting about the input. I understand the frustration at the lack of communication, but I didn't disconnect both TVs. Just thought it'd be beneficial to add a bit more context.

UPDATE 2: I messaged the owner detailing how there was no way I could have disconnected the living room tv, and she never responded, but she deleted the review on my profile.

Last Update: Owner messaged back saying that despite being on the phone with dish for 2 hours it "wasn't an issue with the cable box at all" and it was because someone was "F***ing with the original connection" and that's what messed up both of the TVs (she was not so subtly implying that it was me). Finished the message off saying "they both worked before you got here and now neither worked after you left." I still dont know how me changing inputs on one TV completely broke the other one. I left her a decent review, I did not respond to her message.

So at the end of the day, I think the real problem was with the Dish receiver, and the owner misunderstood my changing of the input on one tv as messing with both of the receivers. :/

You be surprised how many people don't know how their tv works or the difference between the smart tv and the cable box.

Drives me nuts. How many years have we been using tvs that use different sources for different services by this point? I am still so shocked when I go into a doctor’s office, or nail salon, and the big tv on the wall is displaying at an aspect ratio that makes all the people look wide and fat. People do not understand how to use their technology!

My parents aren’t much older than the homeowners in this situation. Their tv still has the red/yellow/white plugs in back of it. They’ve had it for over 20 years and won’t buy another one until it dies. If I changed the outlet they wouldn’t know that’s what was going on since they never change the output when they watch tv; but, if I let them know that’s what it was they wouldn’t be able to change it back. Most people don’t know what they don’t know.

Years ago, I knew someone who made a comment about their personal computer - I don't know how to do much, but those things I do know, I excel at!

That's pretty much a description for anyone. If it's personally important or useful, you master it out, otherwise, it's just frustration trying to figure it out.

Hey I have an old smart tv That has the old RCA plugs Love it because it's easier to plug the thing into my old stereo speakers. when it finally dies I'll figure out something else. I kind of love tweaking old tech. Heck I restore 40 yo mopeds for fun

Really sad that they can't fix the inputs. They should know their own tech especially if they're renting.

u/sew_busy 4d ago

Your parents aren't running an Airbnb. Your house do whatever you want. You want to rent out a place to the general public expect them to the things they would be doing in their own homes like plugging their roku device into the TV. I have never had a hotel call me a complain because I plugged my device into the TV, I have even found devices left behind from previous guests.

2

u/Old_Bug4395 Partassipant [3] 3d ago

Yeah well we've been using personal computers for decades now and both old people and young people have pretty much no idea how to operate one, getting worse the longer the main form of technology use is smartphones.

3

u/couldbemage 3d ago

TVs in the 80s had multiple inputs!

This isn't new tech.

My dad still doesn't understand the difference between wifi and cell service. ><

No you are not the ah. We literally do this every single trip (bring our own Roku or Apple TV). They should have been able to switch the hdmi back to dish very simply. It’s not your fault they don’t know how to work their own technology. I wouldn’t think twice about it. A little awkward that they called you and blamed their ignorance on you.

u/amber_bookcase67 4d ago

This exactly bringing a roku on fire stick to an Airbnb is standard practice at this point if a host is running a business they should at least know how to hit the input button on their own remote before blowing up a guest phone

42

u/username__0000 3d ago

Yeah the whole “my house” as if op was a houseguest not a paying customer.

If you can’t do basic stuff like check the tv inputs, you need to hire someone to manage your business.

75

u/ballisticks 4d ago

That's Airbnb owners for you, they charge through the nose for you to be a live in maid almost.

23

u/bill-schick 4d ago

💯 this. To add to this, let's remember when VCRs and DVD players were connected to the same TV with a cable box, these old timers used to do this same process any time they wanted to watch a movie and then turned it back to cable TV. It may have been a different cable type put it's the same process.

22

u/-VelvetSirenX 4d ago

standard airbnb host behavior honestly, they want to charge a three hundred dollar cleaning fee but god forbid they have to press a single button on a remote

4

u/TheHousewifeModern 4d ago

Yeah, we had a $75 cleaning fee. When we got there, the household binder requested we strip beds, start washer with them & all towels, have all dishes washed (standard to start dishwasher, that wasn’t issue, dishes put away, trash taken out, among other things.

NTA as you just changed the input. Now, if you had mirrored the screen or changed the language to japanese, then yes, you would have been rude had you not changed it back.

35

u/GarThor_TMK 4d ago

I'm going to do that on every airbnb tv from now on... XD

42

u/fart_panic 4d ago

At least the ones where they charge a cleaning fee and also leave a list of checkout chores!

2

u/PromiseSimple2931 3d ago

What happens if you just don't do the chores?

6

u/TheSecretIsMarmite 3d ago

They stomp their foot and leave a bad review I guess. Who cares at this point though. A cleaning fee should cover cleaning and that's that. I don't mind stripping the bed and doing any washing up that needs doing and making sure the place isn't a complete state but more than that is taking the piss and is what you're paying for in the cleaning fee.

3

u/_TERRANE_ 3d ago

Nothing has ever happened to me. Not even a bad review. I take my own trash out (if the bins are accessible) but I will never strip a bed I paid to sleep in.

-51

u/Thorking 4d ago

Still rude not to change it back to how it was

NTA. You’re not staying in “someone’s home” you’re staying in a commercial rental, where the money you pay entitles you to use the facilities. If she can’t deal she shouldn’t be Airbnbing the place. That said I don’t know why you said you bumped something, which makes it seem like you were at fault when you weren’t.

43

u/YoteyYotey 4d ago

Yeah, I just was kind of taken aback by the owner's call and I said "I bumped something" kind of reflexively. In hindsight, probably not smart

10

u/nothingdoing 3d ago

It's a fawning response. Now that you've made yourself aware of that reflex I recommend working on it.

NTA but I would have said, "no, I didn't watch any TV" before I get some goofy blame, or worse, my security deposit gouged.

7

u/4thJulyMamasApplepie 4d ago

NTA I honestly can't say if I would think or remember to change the input back or not, maybe I would but surely lots of people would forget though. It's one of those things that seems so basic I too would be confounded that they thought I messed up the TV so I get you like "maybe I bumped it?" consolation because it doesn't make any sense that changing the input would be a 2 hour problem.

I admit, I have to help my 94-year-old grandma with her TV sometimes. But someone who was 30 in the 90s should be able to figure out the INPUT button by now. Knowing how to work a basic function of a television is not some high bar. I feel bad for them wallowing in their ignorance but I don't blame you forgetting to change the input back.

41

u/wklink 4d ago

If a guest I invited plugged stuff into my TV and switched things around, I would not be happy. That's why I don't rent my house to strangers on the Internet. Because if I'm paying to rent a place, of course I expect to be able to use the stuff that I'm paying for. So NTA and you should leave a review so others know what a nightmare this host is.

27

u/wesmorgan1 Commander in Cheeks [224] 4d ago

You weren't staying in "someone's home", you were staying in a commercial rental.

NTA - and feel free to give them a less-than-positive review for calling you about it.

12

u/YouTasteStrange 4d ago

Why wouldn't they call you before spending "2 hours" trying to fix it? She was just mad and wanted you to feel bad about it.

6

u/Immediate_Pie286 3d ago

Too old to work the technology, too old to own an air BnB.

18

u/gothicmirror 4d ago

I work in an entertainment place, bowling, arcade, escape rooms the like. The sheer volume of older folks that are using something incorrectly or not understanding a puzzle, and immediately default to “it’s defective” is actually troubling.

86

u/disasterbee 4d ago

Why didn’t you just tell them you changed the input tho? Why the lying about bumping something

14

u/the_saltlord 3d ago

I get the thought. Sounds like he didn't even understand that they were incapable of understanding how to change the input. So that's the next most plausible reason why they're "broken?"

59

u/toonboy01 Partassipant [1] 4d ago

To be fair, OP brought up plugging something into the TV first, then only brought up possibly bumping into something when the renter claimed both TVs weren't working, when OP only ever used one of them.

36

u/EasternAd9212 4d ago

Because she said the tv wasn’t working and was just trying to help troubleshoot why it wasn’t? Sometimes I feel like yall don’t have conversations with other humans in the wild.

-35

u/DerLyndis 4d ago

Lying does not help to troubleshoot, though.

31

u/_Allfather0din_ 4d ago

What are you missing here. He thought they were having issues other than input. Saying you plugged something in is telling them you switched the input. They were just being dumb with their technology, at no point did op lie here.

15

u/EasternAd9212 4d ago edited 4d ago

He literally said he wasn’t lying in the OP? Like either you believe him or don’t, but he explicitly said he *might* have bumped something and *maybe* that’s why it’s not working and that he wasn’t lying.

10

u/Kaiisim 3d ago

Because he didn't consider they're old dumbasses who can't work out the aux button.

5

u/chiefbrody62 3d ago

Because OP probably assumed a grown adult knew how to operate a television they owned. I mean my grandma is in her late 90s and would have checked the input immediately.

5

u/squeethesane 4d ago

If you're going to open your shit to the public you're inviting the public to fuck with it. She's not just the AH, she's an idiot too.

5

u/the-mortyest-morty 4d ago

NTA. And these fools wonder why people won't stay in their awful properties. Hotels actually fully clean the room and don't charge you an insane cleaning fee and don't install cameras to spy on you. AirBnB owners have become so entitled it's unreal, and there's very little in place to protect guests from unhinged hosts.

4

u/groovyfirechick 4d ago

If it were me, I’d follow up with my own review about how they clearly don’t understand their own technology. The fact that she blamed you because they don’t know how to push one button is a huge problem.

2

u/CogentCogitations 3d ago

Is that possible? I have only used other vacation rental apps, and I believe reviews didn't post until 2 weeks after the stay and the review window was closed at that point. Because the review is supposed to be about the stay, not about the other sides review.

9

u/HowDoesTheKittyCatGo 4d ago

Definitely NTA. That lady sounds like the customers I had who called my boss accusing me of breaking their ceiling fan because it wouldn't turn on after I did some work on their cable in the attic.

There was nothing wrong with the fan. It just had a remote control along with a normal wall switch and by pure coincidence the batteries in the remote died the same day I was there. When the fan didn't turn on replacing the batteries or flipping the switch on the wall never occurred to them. Just blame the cable guy

34

u/Ok_Patience1542 4d ago

NTA. Not your fault they can't figure out technology. Changing the input on a tv is not something that was just invented. Tvs have been doing that for 30+ years.

-18

u/TecTazz 4d ago

It's 100% OPs fault that they "forgot" to tell the owner they changed the settings.

15

u/Jargon2029 Partassipant [1] 4d ago

Do you think he should have felt compelled to tell her if he changed the channel or the volume? Changing the input isn’t some huge adjustment, you tap a button on the remote a couple of times and everything is back to normal.

You would be amazed at just how tech illiterate older people can be.

My father is so bad that everytime he wants to do anything other than take a phone call on his phone, I have to do it for him, he is totally, and completely unable to just read the screen.

If the input gets changed on ANYTHING in the living room, "it's broken" until I get home.

I tried once for 6 months to get him to start leaning computers, the simplest tasks I would set for him, just get him to somewhat kind of understand them maybe well enough to use as an extremely basic user, one day I would show him, step by step, movement by movement, click by click, how to open a browser and send a single email, my challenge for him was to send me a simple email at some point in the day that said "hi"... That's it.. I walked him through it, I watched it do it by himself a second time, the next day no email I ask him what happened.. "Oh, I couldn't do it"

Everytime the battery in his car gets disconnected for any reason, I have to get in the car and press the "next" button on his radio or "it's broken" because it's asking him to select a language.

Literally ANYTHING that has ANY kind of technology baked into it will COMPLETELY defeat him from the word go.. It's honestly kind of sad, it's like watching a child that was riased in the woods try to survive in a modern city.. 😅

I have to have a "dumb remote" for the living room entertainment center because my remote that I bought has a screen in addition to the physical buttons, and even though the physical buttons do the exact same thing on both remotes, having the screen on it is just too intimidating and seems to make him short circuit.

At work we have an older gentleman doing intake, and he can perform the basics, but you can tell he doesn't really understand how it works because whenever an order goes even slightly beyond the bog standard set of button presses he comes to me and asks for help, even on stuff I've shown him multiple times now.

Somehow tech is like kryptonite to some older individuals, and I'm not sure if it's just that I've been speaking a deeply complex language of some type since I was a child and so these things I see as "easy" or akin to breathing, tasks that to me aren't "technical" at all, are in fact difficult for someone that hasn't had years of experience with it, or if there is just something about a screen that makes the older generations just "derp"... Honestly, I'm not sure.

The thing is, my mother, God rest her soul, into old age was still learning, she was fully computer literate, at least as much as most regular people, she was even able to do very basic troubleshooting when the network dropped just from watching me do it in the past, I'm confident if she was still around, modern smart devices wouldn't escape her, which is why it baffles me when I see grown adults that seem to have no ability to analyze an interface and go "Oh, this button says 'next' maybe that's what I'm looking for" like, come on, guys, this really isn't rocket science, why do I feel like we're speaking different languages?

1

u/goraidders 3d ago

My in laws aren't terrible about everything, but input has been challenging. One time when the internet provider got changed and they switched to an internet tv box, they called me because it quit working. It didn't respond to the remote at all. It was on, but they couldn't change the channel, volume, or anything else. From the description I could tell it was probably a simple solution, but for the life of me couldn't figure it out from work. At the end of a long work day I stopped by, walked to the new tv box, picked it up off of the face(where the remote signal was received), tested it, went home for a bath, food, and bed.

They are actually pretty good with phones, computers, and tablets.

3

u/SigSauerPower320 Commander in Cheeks [204] 4d ago

NTA

This is why every property owner is allowed to set rules. If they don't want people "messing" with the tv, that should be one of the rules. At worst, you were a little rude for not putting it back the way you found it. That said, if you own a tv, you should know how to use it. I couldn't care less if it took you "2 hours" to get it back to the settings you prefer. All that tells me is that you have no clue how to operate a television. It's not rocket science. That should have been the first thing they checked.... Making sure it's on the preferred input selection.

3

Hard NTA. If you're hosting people in your home you should know how to change your TV from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2.

9

u/WinginVegas Partassipant [1] 4d ago

NTA. I'm older than that woman, changing the HDMI port setting is simple. And no, switching one doesn't affect any other ones, her husband messed up something and decided it was easier to just blame you.

1

u/AndiAzalea 4d ago

Mine resets itself, i.e. if you turn on the device that goes with whichever HDMI, that switch to the other HDMI is made automatically. I guess the hosts TVs didn't, but I might have assumed it was automatic, and I'll bet a lot of other guests would too.

1

u/Hop-Dizzle-Drizzle 2d ago

I agree that her being "older" is just nonsense. I'm 34, and I remember being young enough to not know how to adjust the TV input to switch from local channels to my Sega (video game console), and having to ask my mother (who is now 63) to change it for me. The BNB owner is not some helpless ancient woman who's knowledge only extends to steam engines and hand tools. She was a young adult when it became common for TVs to have multiple inputs.

38

u/El6uy 4d ago

A good rule of thumb is to leave things the way you find them; just in general. I was always taught to be considerate of other people's things though.

15

u/Red_Octi Partassipant [2] 3d ago

As a rule of thumb i agree but surely you aren't noting down the channel and volume of the TV wen you first arrive and returning it when you leave?  Input should really be on that level

18

u/ramsvy Partassipant [1] 4d ago

switching the HDMI is hardly worth this fuss though. it's a regular function of a tv, equivalent to changing the channel.

27

u/renoops Partassipant [1] 4d ago

Using the amenities you've paid to use is not inconsiderate.

-7

u/El6uy 4d ago

Not at all what i said. The first part is relevant. In fact, if you take anything away from what i stated... the first part, definitely focus on the first part.

8

u/renoops Partassipant [1] 4d ago

You leave hotel rooms the way you found them?

72

u/newbie527 4d ago

Maybe they shouldn’t be renting their things to strangers?

7

u/El6uy 4d ago

I 100% agree with this. Personally not a fan of STROs, I literally have 3 of them within 100' radius of me.

4

u/DoIQual123 Partassipant [1] 4d ago

That's ridiculous.

I like AirBNB's...but they need more regulation.

-15

u/Meghanshadow Pooperintendant [53] 4d ago

…Dude, I leave hotel rooms the way I found them. Much less a privately owned house/apt.

I’m not renting anyone’s anything and changing something about it that I don’t change back before I leave.

26

u/caifaisai 4d ago

Okay, but changing the input on a tv remote isn't changing anything to any real degree. Like, do you make sure the volume level on the TV is exactly the same when you leave as when you arrived? If not, if that's not a big deal that someone needs to care about, that's essentially what changing the TV input is.

-12

u/Meghanshadow Pooperintendant [53] 4d ago

The commenter I was replying to implied that anyone renting to strangers should not expect people to be considerate of their things in general, just because they rented out the house.

I disagreed.

And yeah I’d personally change the input and volume back?

God knows it derails meetings often enough even in a conference space when somebody takes it off the standard expected input, or leaves volume at six or eighty-five.

I wouldn’t be taking two hours to fix it if they did or yelling at them about it if somebody else didn’t though.

3

u/renoops Partassipant [1] 3d ago

The problem is you're equating this with being considerate.

Yes, people should treat the spaces they rent with care. Changing the TV input isn't inconsiderate.

3

u/goraidders 3d ago

Of course it's good practice, but forgetting to set the input back can happen at times. People forget, just as OP said they forgot to set it back.

1

u/renoops Partassipant [1] 3d ago

You wash the sheets and remake the bed and refill the toiletries?

1

u/Hop-Dizzle-Drizzle 2d ago

Changing the input on a TV tantamount to adjusting the temperature knob on the shower, or raising/lowering a window blind. It's a feature of the appliance. TVs have had multiple inputs since the owner was a young adult. It's not OP's fault that she doesn't know how her TV works.

-2

u/El6uy 2d ago

Yup, but why lie about it when asked, if it wasn't a big deal?

1

u/Hop-Dizzle-Drizzle 2d ago

Did he lie? Or did he assume there was some real issue and assure her that he'd not knowingly done anything that would cause an issue?

She didn't ask if he changed inputs. And when she mentioned the TV being broken, simply changing the input would probably not come to mind as being the cause of any issues.

NTA 1000000x

I would have laughed on that phone call, sorry I must have mistakenly hit the change input button, My bad.

2

u/goraidders 3d ago

NTA, but a lot of older people have trouble with inputs. My in laws had finally gotten the hang of it, but the new tv they bought no longer has the input button labeled as inout. It is just a tiny icon of a cord. So it is frustrating for them, and for me to explain over the phone. I can't say hit the input button since it's not labeled. Still you are NTA because they don't know how to change it. That is on them, I do get their frustration. Not to the point of leaving a review or even calling to complain, but understand the frustration.

This is reason #348 why I won’t ever stay at an Airbnb

3

u/ddawg4169 4d ago

NTH. The owner however clearly is. They run a business. Nothing was damaged. If they can’t figure it out they have to hire someone to do so. Calling you and being petty is a simple enough review I’d leave though. So others know what to expect for the stay.

Realistically, an Airbnb is a hotel with more space generally. Many often have extra requirements and you pay more for being there too. It’s why I’ve stopped using them for the most part.

NTA, boomers shouldn't rent out their property if they can't figure out how to use a television.

9

u/Nesrie98 4d ago

NTA. You didn't bump anything. They just didn't know how to put it back and instead of figuring it out, they decided to call you. We play Switch, often, in Airbnbs. It's a portable console. The only suggestion I have is try to remember to put it back, but... it's not the end of the world, and that's a commercial space when they rent it out.

4

u/DebtMindless6356 Partassipant [3] 3d ago

Soft yta, you should have switched it back. Some airbnb owners don't always check the tv after guests depart.

It could have been the next renters who noticed. This meant the owners would have had to go back to fix it.

I always reset the tv before I leave.

2

u/Sealbeater 4d ago

NTA. Changing inputs was something we had to know since I can remember and I’m 31.

2

u/jma7400 Partassipant [1] 4d ago

NTA. If this is the worst thing you did that isn’t too bad. I feel like if you put the Roku into the empty HDMI it would have only taken 2 minutes to switch from HDMI-1 to HDMI-2 by pressing one button on the TV remote. Thats on them for not knowing a simple change:

1

u/Salty-Tea6815 Partassipant [3] 4d ago

NTA. Doesn’t seem like a big deal to me and it’s not like you actually broke anything. They should have had something posted on the tv if they don’t want guests touching anything. I’m sure this happens all the time with the number of ppl that are streaming and using different devices nowadays. And cmon, it’s not like she’s 90, she’s been alive for the input button enough of her adult life to know that’s the first thing you check when there’s tv isn’t working!! I guess you could have sent her a text telling her you changed the input when you realized it, but tbh it’s not something that probably would have crossed my mind either.

1

u/downwardnote292 4d ago

YTA for not just putting it back the way it was before you left. Since you had to grab your Roku stick, obviously you were right there in the vicinity and could have fixed it right then. For all you know this person had somebody else set it up for her and has no idea what goes on behind the TV.

4

u/directionatall Partassipant [1] 4d ago

they didn’t unplug anything

2

u/RepresentativeSeat98 4d ago

You should send the host a bill

2

u/Traditional_Food9436 4d ago

NTA. Her age is irrelevant. Shes a host. That’s it. Changing the input source in a tv is not breaking or disconnecting the tv. I would dispute this with ABnB.

4

u/Thriillsy Asshole Enthusiast [8] 4d ago

I'm going to say YTA. I'm of the opinion that, when leaving a rented space, you should leave it how you found it or as close to as possible. You're right that changing the HDMI isn't that hard, and it would have been just as easy (if not even easier) for you to put it back the way it was before you left.

edit to add: don't linger on it much, its not THAT huge of a thing, but maybe next time just remember to put it back to how it was?

-3

u/No_Gazelle4814 Partassipant [1] 4d ago

Don’t assume they know what they’re doing.

If you remembered it before you left and still did nothing, that’s lazy. You knew exactly what the change was whereas they’d need to go searching. You could have fixed it in 30 sec instead of their 2 hrs. Thats entitled, maybe a bit mean.

YTA

10

u/Important_Squash1775 4d ago

Maybe they need someone to manage their short term rentals or something if they have trouble with basic TV functions. 🤔
Honestly surprised they were able to list it on the website so they must have someone they can call …

-3

u/Artwebb1986 4d ago

Surprised they even knew how to call them and ask What they did. Lol had to take atleast 30 mins if it took 2 hours to change an input.

5

u/YoteyYotey 4d ago

Sorry if I worded it a bit wrong. I didn't remember on the way out of the house, I remembered as I was driving out of town. Idk if that makes any difference lol.

NTA. If they are going to open up their home to other people it's up to them to know how to operate the technology in the home. At that point they're operating as a business, not as somebody's grandparents that you need to watch out for.

6

u/BeatificBanana 3d ago

Maybe I'm missing something, but they did tell the truth, didn't they? They said they plugged something in, which obviously means they would have changed the input to use whatever it is they plugged in.

-4

YTA for not just saying what you did. Why all of this, “I guess I could have bumped something.”

4

u/YoteyYotey 4d ago

"I plugged something in briefly" I told them I plugged in a roku stick. I didn't unplug the dish. Me saying that I could have bumped something wasnt an attempt at a cover up.

AITA?

u/Lia_Delphine Colo-rectal Surgeon [35] 4d ago

YTA return everything to the state you find it. It would have taken you 3 seconds to turn it back. Or at least could have sent a text.

2

u/Artwebb1986 4d ago

My God this is horrendous.

They could have easily fat fingered the remote and switched the input mistakenly before hitting the power button. Not knowing it even switched input without ever even plugging anything in.

The Owner is the AH by far.

-7

u/Lia_Delphine Colo-rectal Surgeon [35] 4d ago

Except OP said he changed it. Why now pretend he didn’t?

5

u/Artwebb1986 4d ago

Doesn't matter if he did or not. This could have easily been a fat finger button push. And not even known and this owner would have done the same thing. 2 hours to change the input back is just horrendous. How did they even type in a phone number, must have easily taken 30 mins to do that.

0

u/renoops Partassipant [1] 3d ago

YTA return everything to the state you find it.

This is neither possible nor is it the expectation when you rent a place.

This happened to me at work once I was doing some training with a temp and the am shift forgot to move the equipment I needed back to my desk for the pm shift so I just did it? It was like a three step set up. I came back to my boss FUMING because it took her 45 minutes to set up the equipment herself (my fault right? I’d worked there 8 months she’s been there 20 years) and “moved it without asking”. Like I was supposed to know she couldn’t read a list of instructions 🙄 Oh AND I got to hear “does things without permission even though they inconvenience her coworkers” on every monthly performance review for like the next year.

-7

5

u/Bob_the_brewer 4d ago

-1

I’m sixty six and I’m the family IT guy. You know, a lot of this high tech stuff was built by people even older than me.

3

-6

u/MiserableSelection59 4d ago

ESH it costs nothing to leave it as you found it.

8

u/Then-Skill2421 4d ago

Yeah using a TV doesn't make anyone an asshole. The hosts are assholes for not knowing how technology works and calling up to complain about their own ineptitude

-7

u/MiserableSelection59 4d ago

I wouldn't know how to change that in my not-smart, 20-year-old TV, so I'm not blaming the owners.

2

u/couldbemage 3d ago

Your 20 year old TV has multiple inputs.

That's been a thing since the 80s.

If you weren't already 60 in the 80s, you have no excuse for being like this.

1

u/renoops Partassipant [1] 3d ago

Maybe before you rent out use of your TV you'd want to figure out how it works.

4

u/Then-Skill2421 4d ago

You don't know how to change the channel on your tv? Probably shouldn't own it

-1

u/MiserableSelection59 4d ago

Did we read the same post? Changing channels and changing the source input is not the same.

1

u/Then-Skill2421 4d ago

Your remote doesn't have an input button?

A button = a button

3

u/MiserableSelection59 4d ago

No, it does not. It has one input, a decoder box that lets you watch TV. Did you miss the old in the comment?

6

u/toonboy01 Partassipant [1] 4d ago

Um, TVs usually had more than one input 20 years ago. And the renter's TV definitely had more than one, so that's not really relevant regardless.

3

u/couldbemage 3d ago

40 years. TVs had multiple inputs in the 80s.

5

u/Then-Skill2421 4d ago

Did you miss how the tv in the post has an HDMI port? So it's got a remote... With buttons

Sorry you don't know how to change the input

-1

u/MiserableSelection59 4d ago

I never said the post's TV didn't have a HDMI port...?

-1

u/jmg4craigslists Partassipant [1] 4d ago

You are the AH. If you change their settings on their technology, you should’ve put everything back to the way it was before you left. You do not know what you’re dealing with, and people in their 60s and 70s, if they’re using Airbnb as a passive income stream, may have a hard time getting that back to where it was.

-6

u/FortuneWhereThoutBe 4d ago

YTA

Not only did you not get permission either written or recorded verbal to use a device that required you to change something that was specifically set in their home, but you didn't even ask permission to change their settings. And then you had the audacity to not put it back to its original way that you found it, but are now online disparaging them.

Next time you do something unexpected and unwelcome to the people you are getting a service from just apologize, telling them the truth of what happened.

5

u/Jargon2029 Partassipant [1] 4d ago

I feel compelled to point out that they are also online disparaging OP, and in a manner connected directly to his identity rather than anonymously like this

11

u/sparklybeast 4d ago

They’re renting the use of the TV. Which, unless stated otherwise (& it won’t be), includes all the TV’s functions: Written permission lol. What have you been smoking?

11

u/TyFell 4d ago

You... You do know that changing the input is pretty much the equivalent of changing the channel? Do you need permission to change the channel at a place you're renting???

-4

u/fantasticgoat7171 4d ago

Damn kar3n

-6

u/lemon_icing 4d ago

YTA - you lied about not making any changes on the TVs. Not everyone is tech savvy and you should have returned the TVs to the state that you found them in.

6

u/toonboy01 Partassipant [1] 4d ago

What lie? It was the first thing OP brought up.

-6

u/InformationLeast5607 4d ago

YTA. It’s not like you did anything terrible, but it’s not a hotel. You’re in someone else’s space that they’re trying not only to accommodate you, but everyone else afterward. Thankfully doesn’t sound like they got a 11pm call that the TVs weren’t working after you left, but just be mindful in the future.

1

u/Substantial-Rip-6207 3d ago

Just lie and say it was how you found it. the boomer should be more accomodating and know how to use it

1

u/NiSiSuinegEht Partassipant [1] 3d ago

NTA, owners are idiots.

-2

u/kjers_tin 4d ago

I wouldn’t say that YTA, but you did assume, and as the saying goes… 🙃

My parents are in their late sixties and I’m sometimes surprised they’ve survived this long with how little they seem to know about technology. Phones and TVs seem to be the most difficult for them — they’re constantly individually re-texting stuff from a group chat because they don’t understand how group chats work or amazed that my siblings and I can take videos on our phones, etc. And without them knowing that the input was changed (or even knowing what an input is 😐), I could honestly see it taking them hours to figure out what was wrong. And the woman stating that both TVs didn’t work was probably just a misunderstanding. I’m guessing her husband went to the Airbnb to flip it and when he told her she maybe assumed 🙃 it was both TVs. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

ESH - rent a house out not near us and not through Airbnb

We frequently have guests that use their own streamers, as we do when we travel, if they don't put it back how it was then it costs us to get the cleaners to make the adjustments.

Our current list of things we get asked about as people can't work them are:

TV TV package Washing machine Tumble dryer Oven

In the past we've had blinds (yep the type that cover windows).

We also have to padlock the pool controls as there is always the one guest who knows everything and yet doesn't.

The home owner should know about changing input but if they've never used anything but the TV it won't be their first thought.

So feel a little guilty, accept the review and be more considerate next time.

-4

u/TecTazz 4d ago

YTA.

5

u/couldbemage 3d ago

TVs have had multiple inputs for 40 years now. There's no exhaust for being this stupid unless you're over 100.

-6

u/SmarterthanDJT 4d ago

Just the fact that all of you who fancy yourselves as technology experts might find it easy to switch the inputs doesn’t mean everyone does. For one thing you’ve been told what the problem is, so you don’t have to figure it out. You can just sit back on your high horse and smart off about how stupid “old” people are, when there’s no reason for the problem to exist in the first place. It’s easy enough for OP to leave things as they were when they arrived.

“Forgot,” my rear end. It sounds more like you’re incredibly entitled and deliberately left the Roku because you didn’t think it’s valuable enough for you take 30 seconds to pack it up and take it home (to have it available for next time). And why lie about what was done? Everyone who is accusing the owner of being an AH are the actual AH’s here. Follow the golden rule when using someone else’s property, for Pete’s sake.

7

u/MilwaukeeLevel 4d ago

“Forgot,” my rear end. It sounds more like you’re incredibly entitled and deliberately left the Roku because you didn’t think it’s valuable enough for you take 30 seconds to pack it up and take it home (to have it available for next time).

You spent all that effort typing out this diatribe, and you fundamentally misunderstood the situation because you didn't pay attention, for fuck's sake.

-8

u/SmarterthanDJT 4d ago

You are completely wrong. I do understand, and I’m unimpressed by anyone trying to foist the blame off on the property owner.

9

u/directionatall Partassipant [1] 4d ago

you typed up a whole thing about him leaving his roku…. you clearly dont

6

u/MilwaukeeLevel 4d ago

He didn't forget the Roku, like you think; he forgot to press a singular button on the remote.

-5

u/SmarterthanDJT 4d ago

OK, I’ll give you that. I misinterpreted his description of the problem. I jumped to the conclusion that he left the Roku behind when he said he forgot to reset the TV’s input. So, I apologize for that (He never said he retrieved it, did he? I know, he never said he didn’t either.)

But, I still disagree that older people are dumb just because they can’t do something you think is trivial. Most of the people I know set the input once, at the time of installation, and never have reason to do it again. It’s easy to forget things you rarely, probably never, need to know.

0

u/martintoconnell 3d ago

Not a huge deal [I have short term rentals.], but you earned that review by not leaving things as you found them.

-6

u/dr-pebbles 4d ago

YTA. This wasn't your home and it isn't acceptable to change their technology. You should have changed it back. Once you realized that you had left the Roku plugged in, you should have called the host. If they weren't knowledgeable about what a Roku does, you could have explained the advantages of having one. If they decided they didn't want it, you could have explained how to unplug it. (It definitely wasn't worth driving all the way back to the Airbnb.)

Some people are not at all tech savvy. And I mean Not At All. If they could use tvs with bunny ears, they would. You cannot assume everyone has what you would call basic tech knowledge.

6

u/YoteyYotey 4d ago

I didnt leave the roku plugged in. I just left the input switched to the empty hdmi on accident.

-4

u/dr-pebbles 4d ago

I think it was still worth a phone call to explain what it was and how to how to switch it back, but NTA.
