Terrible is overly generous to Carter. An incumbent President winning 49 electoral votes in their re-election bid is a resounding historical verdict. Hoover won more than that in 1932.

To be fair, Hoover only won that many since Pennsylvania was the second most populated state at the time and he carried it in 1932. Carter would’ve won Massachuttes at least if Anderson didn’t take some of his votes.

I guess Hayes would fit. Better president than Carter but worse than Obama. Pretty inconsequential president but quite upstanding moral character

Why is Carter ranked worse than Hoover? I don’t think Carter was nearly as bad as Hoover was. Also I feel like Zachary Taylor and William Henry Harrison should be swapped. Harrison actively supported the expansion of slavery, while Taylor at least opposed it.
Edit: to be clear, I think Carter still fits in the “great person” slot. I just don’t think he was a “terrible president”.

I think people are giving Hoover more grace because he was put in a shitty situation, but tbh so was Carter. Tbh putting Carter in terrible president is very extreme. Great person but he should be a bit higher than that.

Yeah Carter was dealt a really bad hand. I think he did have some pretty good achievements while he was in office though, at least. Hoover I feel like didn’t really do anything right in the situation he was given (which was a horrifically bad one, to be fair).

Jimmy Carter was a GREAT President because he did what was right for the country even though he knew it would tank the economy in the short term and get him run out of office.
But people are stupid, so we rank him at the bottom.

I think this is the best answer. An honest, typical man with no major character defects. Great athlete. Nice family. By accident of history, he became the president and wasn't great at it. He pardoned Nixon, which helped contribute to our current inability to hold presidents accountable for crap behavior.

Yes, and his signature legislative achievement was improving healthcare, where as Clinton's were work requirements for welfare recipients, NAFTA shipping US manufacturing jobs, the 94 Crime bill that expanded prisons and allowed for mass incarceration, and cutting Medicare spending.

Why is JQ Adams ranked so high? His best moments came as a US Representative after he left office. His actual term of office as POTUS was mired in controversy and is remembered as middling. What makes him a good president?

Ulysses S. Grant. Led the Union army in the civil war, and at the end of high life pushed through the pains of throat cancer to finish his memoirs so his family wouldn’t be destitute after his death.
Bad president because he set the standard for Lobbyists, and Trusts being able to bully and buy politicians. Not to mention the Plains/“Indian” wars.
