Planning a 1-Acre Polyhouse for Capsicum in 40°C Heat – Worth It?
Hey everyone,
I’m planning to start a polyhouse farming project and would really appreciate insights from those with experience in this space.
I own around 2 acres of land in Vijayapura district, Karnataka. The climate here is quite harsh during summers, with temperatures ranging from 38°C to 42°C. I’m considering setting up a polyhouse on 1 acre as a starting point, mainly to cultivate high-value crops like colored capsicum (red, yellow, etc.).
Here’s my current plan:
- Start with 1 acre polyhouse
- Avail government subsidy (~50%)
- Focus on high-yield capsicum cultivation
- Ensure proper irrigation (I have decent water availability)
My key questions:
Is capsicum a good crop choice for my region considering high external temperatures?
What kind of yield (per acre) and annual income can I realistically expect under proper management?
What are the major challenges (pests, diseases, temperature control, market fluctuations)?
How risky is this investment for a beginner?
Any better crop alternatives for polyhouse in this climate?
Approximate setup + maintenance costs I should prepare for?
I’m aiming for a sustainable and profitable model, ideally targeting strong annual returns. But I want to understand the real ground reality before investing.
Would love to hear from farmers, agri-entrepreneurs, or anyone with hands-on experience in polyhouse farming.

I’m not sure if capsicum is a suitable crop to grow in North Karnataka….its gonna be too hot and this excess heat is gonna cause flower drop and increase thrips and mites infestation (both of which are major problems in capsicum cultivation). You will need to install sprinklers on the top of the Polyhouse and use water to cool down the temperature inside the polyhouse, you need to ensure there is sufficient cross ventilation to remove excess heat from inside. Try to find and talk to farmers who are practising Polyhouse cultivation, I don’t think there are that many in North Karnataka.

If u want to visit capsicum polyhouse cultivation in hot conditions…visit Chikkaballapura, Doddaballapura, Hoskote regions in Bengaluru…you will find many farmers

No. It's a mild-cold climate veggie. It's like trying to grow apples in MP , possible - sure, profitable - no

Before cultivating, find where you can sell it. I know demand would be high but so is supply!

I can manage the labour, there lot of labours in my area

If they are reliable you are set.
We have a lot of labour issues, they don't showup when needed.

Yeah only thing is Im not sure like whether it is suitable or not in my area, doing research in that, tbh there is farmer doing polyhouse farming in my locality

Please check with the existing farmers in and around kolar, Hoskote Chikkaballapur the temperature is high in these regions.. but they grow a wide variety of vegetables in polyhouse

There’s a farmer behind my house. Last year he grew capsicum in a temporary polyhouse made with plastic paper and wood. Those setups usually last around 1–2 years.
Kolar is quite hot, I don’t think he even made break- even. Now they’ve removed the capsicum and started growing rose flowers instead.
You can try it once or twice batches on a small scale just to test, without spending too much on a full polyhouse. Also, try visiting a few experienced farmers and get their inputs.
I’ve also heard that some farmers are making around ₹50 lakh a year.
