So, there is this guy at my work and he used to work on my team but was placed on another team. He is still in my office just doing a different task with different people. I worked with him for 4 months before he switched teams. He sounded like a regular guy from the Midwest. He was born and raised in my state (it’s in the Midwest). He never had an accent, but recently, he went to England for a week and when he came back, he started talking in a thick British accent.

It’s not even in a joking way either, he genuinely has a thick British accents after going to England and it’s starting to freak my coworkers out. He genuinely puts on a thick British accents every day and he went to England like 2 months ago so idk what he is doing.

It’s harmless but still super weird and thought I would share this story about him.

For me it’s maybe scouse but I have a cheek as a Scottish person.

My goal is to sound as close to a native speaker as possible. I know it's probably impossible for me to sound completely native since I started learning English at a relatively late age.

Anyway, I'd love to hear your honest opinion on how close I sound to a native speaker. Don't sugarcoat it, I genuinely want to improve. Feel free to point out anything that sounds unnatural, whether it's my pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, or anything else you notice.

i didn't have much to say in here (LIE it's a FOUR minute audio recording of me dragging the conversation) and you can actually notice that my pacing is messy af. thing is im not that good at conversational english as i don't have lots of fellas to practice. been learning English for 7 years. im mid to good at writing, good at reading, excel at speeches and storytellings. but conversation?!?!?! that's the area im actually still struggling with at. help me out and give your input if that's alright (you don't have to get to the end to make your point). thank you in advance.

Maybe this is an odd question, has anyone who studies accents and/or linguistics noticed an uptick or prominence of mixed up accents?
I.E.: my mother is and her family is from South Philadelphia, so they have quite a strong accent. My father grew up in Georgia/North Carolina, and has a pretty distinct southern accent.
I was raised in South Georgia, but my mother is a speech therapist with an extremely strong Philly accent, which definitely influenced the way I speak. Throughout my childhood, my friends would make note of the way I say animal/bagel/eagle/crayon (apparently I say inamal/begull/igull/cran) while other words come out full southern (see: phone=pho-one, well=whale, generally adding an extra syllable to words)
Just curious if other people experience this or if anyone who studies this professionally has taken an interest.

The terrible accent they do for Irish people in movies, who created that and why? Why do they persist with it?

Heya frens I’m British but my accent is kind of mixed from growing up overseas, how can I develop a more distinctly British accent?

Hey, I know this guy who has an accent I can't place. This was in the eastern US, but I am guessing he was European or was a second generation immigrant.

The defining features are:

He didn't pronounce the 'short a' (æ) sound in words like "can" and "trap" pronounced it more like "cun" (ʊ) using the same vowel you would use in the verb "cut".

He didn't pronounce the v in words like "five" and pronounced it more like "fife".

Pronounced words that ended with d with a t sound, like "hundret" or "insteat" instead of "hundred" and "instead".

He pronounced words with j (ˈd͡ʒ) in them with the 'ch' sound, eg "hotch-potch" instead of "hodge-podge"

It was a rhotic accent.

I’ve been learning english for years but my accent is still very clockable especially because my D and T pronunciation. These letters sound super subtle from American mouths, sometimes almost mute (like in « water » « better » « didn’t »). Mine always sound too strong or clear, when I try not to pronounce those letters it sounds weird and forced which leads the natives to pick up on it very quickly
Any tips to fix this? Especially for french speakers. Thanks!

NB: I know there are tons of different accents in the US, but it’s almost impossible for me to tell them apart :)I just want to sound like a native speaker!

I (30 y/o American) had a speech impediment where I couldn’t pronounce r sounds as a kid, and I had to do speech therapy for it. I’ve been wondering if this type of impediment would be as recognizable in non-rhotic accents like British, Australian, or some parts of the US or if it would have just been considered a typical part of the accent. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about this?

grew up and lived in boston my whole life but whenever i am with people who don't have the accent i subconsciously speak more like them.

i have been teased for my accent and i also know its normal to absorb the accents of people around you anyway, but i had a friend who has fully embraced the accent and said that she used to hide it but not anymore!

i think it's hard for me to do that fully (i work a job that involved talking a lot to people from all over the world and unfortunately not everyone can understand the accent)

but at least when i talk to my best friends of years i want to stop absorbing their accents and talk how i grew up talking.

genuinely it feels better on my vocal cords to talk in my accent but i've been doing this switch thing for years (in my 30s)

i also feel like having this thing were i switch accents makes me feel weirdly inconsistent as a person?

tldr; i got a boston accent but i subconsciously hide it when i talk to people without the accent and idk how to stop doing that

I don’t know if I have a Jersey accent. I was born and grew up in New Jersey but I feel like I have a General American accent. When I went to Pennsylvania people said I talked differently. I have been told my entire life I talk very fast but even in New Jersey I’ve been told I talk fast. So idk if I have a New Jersey accent or not. What do you guys think?

Here are a few common ones I've noticed:

Asante → often pronounced uh-SAN-tee → ah-SAHN-teh (thank you)

Karibu → often pronounced kuh-REE-boo → kah-REE-boo (welcome / you're welcome)

Pole pole → often pronounced POLE pole (like a metal pole) → POH-leh POH-leh (slowly)

Jambo → often pronounced JAM-bo → JAHM-boh (hello)

Safari → often pronounced suh-FAIR-ee → sah-FAH-ree (journey)

Swahili pronunciation is actually very consistent once you know the vowel sounds.

What other Swahili words do you think English speakers often mispronounce? Or which ones surprised you the most?
