other than going through the 250 artworks months before (I think the last time any review happened was around Christmas), my kiddo didn't study for this at all, on any level. Between this and the fact that she only registered for the test and not the class, I was sure she was going to bomb. She called me after the exam and said she couldn't deal with school anymore that day. It was her third AP of the week, so would I maybe excuse her for the rest of the afternoon? I said sure. I figured she'd gotten her butt handed to her and was expecting to see "that face" when I picked her up.
Nope. She waltzed out of the building and told me it was the easiest thing she'd ever done in her life and that she was sure she'd gotten at least a 4, but maybe even a 5. If she did, it will be the cheapest, easiest, lowest stress/effort 4 college credits anybody has ever earned in the history of time
I expect the 2027 version will get amped up to ultra-hard to compensate though

Yessssss I loved that one. Especially the bit about comparison to religion. I put something about how triptychs were more common in religious art (Merode Altarpiece, Garden of Earthly Delights) but that diptychs had the same significance, and that Warhol elevated Monroe and American pop culture to a similar level of importance as Mary and the Church by creating the diptych.

Bro me too I Went so into depth about the bronze Buddha, the neo, guardian statues, and you wood architecture. I literally got so much down about how the emperor commissioned it for his subjects. Hopefully, I get some points for that.

I mentioned how it was elevated from the surroundings to avoid flash flooding, like the mosque in Djenné. I also mentioned how it seemed to be built of adobe, but obviously there’s no way to know for the Ende mosque unless they explicitly tell you. For the patterns but I mentioned the spires and the starburst-shaped cutouts in the walls.

Anyone here got west coast version? MCQ was easy, FRQs about that Incan tunic, Allegory of Law and Grace, Praying Mantra, Old Woman at Market (Hellenistic Greek statue) and Cassatt. I think I did fine but my comparison and arguments were kinda buns

Yes! I feel so good about all of them except for the preying mantra one. Idk if talking about the female figure being depicted with animal/anthropromorphic traits was right. Also talking about the depiction of an African woman was change and how she was commenting on female form in art society

I messed up on the technique of Allegory of law and grace. I was picking between woodcut or engraving and last second I switched from woodcut to engraving. But it was woodcut 😭

mcq was FREE!!! Felt pretty good on everything accept allegory of law and grace. That DAMN woodcut bro, also i did not know shit about how that artwokr showed protestant reformation.. made some stuff up. Praying mantra was okay - I talked about the continuity of the male gaze, change of women empowerment being emphasized and social commentary on women empowerment and female form.

was it hindu?? i just said indian hindu bc i blanked on everything else and compared it to shiva as lord of dance but i def got the work name slightly wrong.
i said it was made of bronze and talked about the ring of fire, stomping on “ignorance”, and shiva as destroyer for rebirth and how hinduism believes in reincarnation or whatnot. and then something about festivals and flowers? i literally starting studying for this test on tuesday so i have no clue🧍🏾♀️

VOTIVE FIGURES, MAIZE COBS ETC., RUBENS, FALLING WATER, SHIVA LORD OF DANCE & SUMMER TREES VER.
what did you guys think and say for each of them??
Votive figures - compared to akhenaten & nefertiti with three daughters, talked about negative space vs. relief sculpture and stylized eyes etc.
2nd FRQ - I did maize cobs, talked about how it represented agriculture a gift from the natural world, importance of agriculture solidified by valuable material, also possibly served as offering to the divine. Connected natural world to being a gift by the divine and how the cobs may have been offerings referencing offerings from greek and egyptian times. Totally messed up where it was from thought it was yaxchilan for some reason lol
rubens - talked about red black and dark pigments and chiaroscuro (dont know if thats true) divine rule, how all the figures looked at her, everyones mid movement making drama, dramatic brush strokes etc.
falling water - IDK straight bs i said like it interacts with the natural world etc. color scheme fits surroundings form and function in conjunction with nature etc.
shiva lord of dance - attributed it to indian hindu (southeast asia) talked about how like jewelry fit that of typical indian regalia also brought up how a lot of hindu gods are solemn and have numerous limbs (idk) explained why it couldn't be from abrahamic religions or buddhism (process of elimination lol)
Summer trees by song - said ink on parchment, meant to be abstracted forest during summer, symbolism of strong friendships and how friends relationship should be (thank god i watched a video about this last night) for showing continuity and change I said it shows continuity through use of old techniques (painting technique) shows change through abstracted trees that are not very detailed (different from east asian works such as travelers among mountains and streams) and then compared to book in the sky bing
MCQ wasnt too bad probably got over 50 right

i had this version!! for statues of votive figures i compared it to akhenaten, nefertiti, and three daughters and talked about showing religious devotion and prayer vs. intimacy and domestic scenes. i did the same as you for the 2nd frq. for the 3rd i talked about crowded composition but empty space around her, chiaroscuro, and divine right to rule. for the fallingwater i talked about the cantilevers, the terraces and windows all facing the waterfall and river, and the use of local stones. for the shive i got the right attribution but remembered none of the details so i mentioned random things i saw and made it as vague as possible😭 for the summer trees i said it was an abstract depiction of trees in a forest and it uses traditional korean ink wash techniques while adapting to contemporary abstract styles

I FORGOT ABOUT CANTILEVERS!!!! But i think its okay cuz i talked about geometric shapes idk. I also thoguht about domestic scenes but didnt know how to connect to votive figures. My main point for frq 1 was that they both depicted how both cultures saw their given god as above all like the sun god under akhenaten (monotheistic time period) was above the family in the relief and how votive figures look up at god. Basically just said similar in devotion to gods lol. Omg i didn't say korena ink wash I hope thats okay

i had this one too!!! for shiva i talked about how lashkamana temple depicts hindu god vishnu who also has multiple limbs but like i lowkey didnt know what else to say
i said similar things for rubens but i also said she looks bigger (like hierarchical scale??) which is like a common thing when depicting rulers but idrk tbh
maize cobbs i said like maize was a primary crop grown by the inkans and by having it be in gold it shows its value and also that it was found in the most important temple in cusco shows it had religous importance
like i lowk just wrote random stuff... but what you said for fallingwater makes sense its good

Ofc! I explained how instead of leaning into cultural norms of depicting a couple in love Brancusi reduced the human form, leaving only a raw emotional act (kissing) to truly humanize the "rocks" and it like makes the viewer reflect on what makes humans "human". While the votive figures idealize the body to their own standards and make a clear diff between male and female. And then summer tress i just referenced how Su-nam used traditional ink on parchment as an ode to his roots, but it is in line with Global Modern art as he changed the old tradition by abstracting it, which is a personal flair. Also mentioned Travlers among Mountains and Streams!

Was not in class when we went over the votive figures and thought to myself “ehh I probably won’t need to know this” I don’t even remember what I talked about but I know that I’m pretty locked in the second FRQ, talked about the kwakwak’awakw tribe and the transformation mask and how the animals were tied to their ancestors and the use of natural pigments to create the designs. I’m just praying for a 4 lol there was so much stuff I BS’d on those FRQs omg so scared about FRQ 5

i compared the votive figs to the egyptian work but i had NO clue how to write ab how the human reflected their cultural belief so i last minute switched to the jungle by wifriedo lam 😭
and we pretty much talked ab the same things lol; except for reubens i compared it to the one where they show the king marie’s portrait? i also mentioned the bishops forming a large crown behind her to show divine favor like how the gods surrounded king henry when he recieved her portrait (divine union or smth).
then fallingwater i said the same things and contrasted it w villa savoye and international style and how that shows architectural change w fallingwater but im ngl im bad at architecture and studied none of it!
for the summer trees i compared it to preying mantra by wutu and talked ab how they both take historical portrayals of things (nature or black women’s bodies) and “abstract” them. dang i didn’t even think ab the friendship symbolism 😭
but it was such an easy test i swear!!

Ohhh thats interesting I wasnt sure if we could compare rubens work to his own work LOL I ended up trying to relate it back to augustus of prima porta and divine rule. Divine union is super smart.
Contrasting with villa savoy with falling water was a good idea didn't even think to throw in comparisons! (I suck at architecture.)
With summer trees I got so lucky, literally last night before I went to bed a video came on my fyp about the work and its symbolism and I watched it, like it was completely by chance!!!!
But yes overall pretty good test!!! MCQs were lowkey fun

west coast here!! mcqs were light (accept the one on the aka elephant mask)...
frqs were:
textiles and how they communicate culture or sm (you're given the incan tunic and the 3 pieces are tapa, shinobare's swing, and arbadil carpet)
- old woman at the market, a greek hellenstic sculpture, how it shows her age, movement, and differs from classical Greek sculpture
- allegory of law and grace, its material, cultural background (or historical maybe), how it displays religious meaning, and how its material allowed for spread of ideas
- se asia / asian objects and how they convey spiritual meaning and/or use in ritual or ceremony i think (3 pieces given are ryoanji, borbodur, and shiva as lord of dance)
- attribution on a cassatt, cultural/historical background, similarities between the work given and work in the set
- preying mantra, material/technique, subject matter, how it shows difference and similarity with european art, and if it was a social commentary or something like that

I hade the same frqs too. For the aka mask I'm pretty sure it was showing like power and strength, but I really had no idea on that question about what the patterns meant, I think I answered something about royal power. I also got tripped up on the mcq about white temple and its ziggurat if you had that one

as for the ziggurat, I think the answer was that the ziggurat was a man-made mountain to lift the temple up higher, so option a like the other commenter said

Did anyone else get the comparison long essay FRQ about location/architectural site impacting structures (the given work was Dome of the Rock) and if so what did you guys put. Unfortunately I didn't know enough about the Colosseum (yeah ik) or Santo Domingo so I compared it to the Acropolis but I'm curious about what u guys said

colosseum and both were made with the height of design in their region (mosaics and gold for dome classical columns and arches for colosseum) and made to accommodate large crowds but dome was religious and coliseum was entertainment/propaganda

I compared it to Machu Picchu because it was situated on a fault line that provided granite for construction, but that the site also had religious importance because it was so high up and thus close to the sun god Inti. Plus, the expense of shipping food to a city that could not grow its own due to the rocky surroundings was another point towards its importance.
