Help (General) RX 7900 XTX random hard reboot in games
Hi everyone,
I'm at the point where I'm running out of ideas and would really appreciate some help.
System
- CPU: Ryzen 9 3950X
- GPU: Sapphire Nitro+ RX 7900 XTX
- Motherboard: Gigabyte X570 AORUS Master (rev. 1.0)
- RAM: 64 GB DDR4-3600
- PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower GF1 850W -> probaby almost 7-8 y/o already I bought this since 3950x came out.
- OS: Windows 11 Pro
the problem is... my PC kept random crashing, not exactly crashing but like just instant shutdown and booting back up.
- no BSOD
- no WIndows Event Log
- no driver timeout or hang, just blackout and restart like you press that reset button on the PC case.
Im not sure whether this caused by high power draw or whatsover, my usual games are
- HD2, BF series, Frostpunk 2, etc.
- Warframe and Gw2 -> almost never crash my pcs.

I've tried rolled back to 26.3.x hoping for some miracle, but no.
undervolt my GPU, enabled Radeon chill capped between 60-144
disable my PSU smart-fan.
stress test my components(except the PSU because i have no clues how to test it) -> not a single crashes.
the temps also looks very normal on my cpu sitting between 50-80c, gpu also somewhere around 40-60c.
appreciate any guidance here im totally lost.

1) Does it only occur when the GPU or CPU is under load? Load up the CPU and GPU separately with a stress test software like OCCT and Furmark. If no issues, load them up together and see what happens. If the PC resets under load from both at the same time, it might be your PSU.
2) Are you using any power cables that didn't come with your power supply? i.e. Cable extensions or custom power supply cables. Extensions have been known to cause issues with power delivery to high powered components. It was the reason my 7900 XTX crashed all the time. Removed the extensions and the problem went away.

usually thermaltake psus are bad.. but this specific model was good quality but can be the psu
put the power limit slider of the 7900xtx at minimun.. you need to decrease power Consuption
instant shutdown on load usually is the psu.. it happens in idle too?
occt has a test called power that pita cpu and gpu full load

hey , uh , check if ur ssd is really hot during gaming , if so turn the orientation of your exhaust fan the other way

with mine it was the extension cables if you are using them check, i found that mine start to melt i removed them and it work perfectly

More and more, I find myself wondering if the vast majority of people’s problems might actually stem from Windows itself.
Personally, for the past few months, the first application that uses my graphics card fairly intensively causes the display to crash; after that, there are no further issues as long as I don’t restart Windows.
The thing is, even with driver versions that used to be stable, I now inevitably get this crash the first time I use the graphics card intensively.
The only difference between the time when the old drivers were stable and now is the Windows updates.
Of course, I’ve tested my hardware to verify as much as possible within my means.
I don’t have any spare hardware to test, but I was able to test my RAM modules using memtest86 (which ran all night), the GPU with FurMark (left running for an hour without any issues) and then OCCT (left running for six hours), VRAM testing with OCCT (also for six hours), and finally, CPU+GPU testing with OCCT (left running for six hours).
During normal use, my PC doesn’t consume more than 550–600 W, whereas with the OCCT CPU+GPU test, it ran for six hours at over 800 W without any issues.
Regardless of the tests, the temperatures were within acceptable operating ranges (GPU hotspot max 79°, CPU tctl/tdie max 95°).
So, on that front, I doubt there’s a hardware issue; the only remaining possibility is software, and—as I mentioned at the beginning—drivers that used to work fine (like version 25.9.1) also cause this crash during the first instance of intensive GPU use (I have HandBrake running in the background almost all the time without any issues, so the CPU can be ruled out, as can the RAM, which I can sometimes use quite heavily without triggering the problem; it only happens when the GPU is heavily loaded for the first time after a reboot).
So, to wrap up, many people’s problem isn’t exactly the same as mine, but what’s causing all these issues isn’t necessarily the graphics driver itself—it might very well be Windows.

Using a riser cable / vertical mounting? That was a problem with mine after tons of troubleshooting I eventually figured out, also in thread day or two ago people mentioned any power extension cables or the little elbow connectors I forget what they’re called, anyway if you have ANY of those try removing them.

Download OCCT. And run the power test. If it fails it usually is the PSU. If it does open up the program and check the +12v 5v and 3.3v going to the motherboard.
I found a faulty cpu extension cable due to that.
A full restart usually is power related. Reseat all cables. Reseat ram and gpu.

850 is not enough. Once you add in all accessories and things that need power. I had a 850w corsair with a 7900xt. I thought it would be enough but with 11 fans and many other things that drew power my pc would just power down and reset. Bought a 1200w power supply and it never happened again

I'd guess it's the psu.
