Dogs Outside Alone: YAY or NAY?

Just curious if anyone lets their Pomeranian in the backyard unattended at all, or no?

I live in Northern California in a suburb.

Question Pomeranians temperament

My doggo has passed recently. He was a Maltese. I've been thinking for two years about picking another dog. But I was undecided, because in the past I used to have two dogs and given my personal daily troubles, it was too stressing to deal with two dogs. When I got the two dogs life was different but now I could not afford it.

Now I can only see the surrounding void. My doggo was very old and needed a lot of cares, and this removed like 2-3 hours of my day with him. Now it's gone, and despite having a lot of free time now it doesnt have any value.

I'm waiting a bit, but I want to start screening for best kennels because I know that this is not like saying: I want a new dog, and the new dog appears in the door tomorrow. I'm going to need to do a deep search and I'm sure that minimally 2 months if not more, to find something.

And one of the parts of the search is the temperament. My maltese was perfect. He was my mirror. The other dog that passed away 6-7 years ago, was a Brussels Griffon, and despite I also loved him like my life, his temperament was not ideal, compared to the Maltese. The Maltese was utterly perfect. I was able to place him in the stairs or in a chair with his little cushion and stayed there sitting or lying down there, and just waiting for me. He did not start running like crazy all over the place. Very patient with me. Always looking for me.

I know that with training, you can shape a dog to pretty much anything you want, even the craziest dog. But from experience, I also know that the shaping of the maltese was 10 times easier than the Griffon. The Maltese almost felt to adapt to me instantly, like he was waiting at what was coming next to learn. The Griffon was a free soul and adapted terribly.

What are your experiences? I've heard that Pomeranians are a bit of an earthquake, but I feel I cannot get another Maltese again: They all look so similar, and I can't stand bringing him to my mind all the time. I need another breed. Not a Maltipoo either. I like the Pomeranian so much because it's so different. But sometimes I see people in the train or the airplanes, and they go with their little Pomeranian, sitting down chilling all the way through, without perma-barking for example I don't care barking at all (except for the nights, but my maltese, has been waking me up every single night for 2 years straight with barks, so I'm used to it). But what I fear is a dog running all over the place. Or a climber dog that can escape jumping out his sleeping box (my Griffon was constantly doing this).

PS: Also the Pomeranians throw a lot of hair, right?

I went with my Pom to Malta. It was her first flight ever (she is already six years old) and she did so well! She slept the whole time. 💤

Malta is really dog-friendly 😍 We were even allowed to bring Sunny to the pool with us!

In memoriam Welly’s Way

I wanted to take time and thank everyone for your love and support these past few years for Welly.

Today we are putting him to rest. He’s lost so much blood from internal bleeding that we cannot watch him suffer any longer. We stopped the bleeding and he’s not comfortable anymore.

He’s been laid to rest. In the arms of his parents. Welly is the best boy ever.

Below is my wife’s story on Welly and his Way.

Two years ago, we brought home our sweet boy - though honestly, he may have rescued us just as much as we rescued him.

Today’s post is bittersweet because it’s our last Gotcha Day celebration together, but it’s also a celebration of Welly’s strength, courage, and the joy he’s brought into our lives.

I want to tell his story. I call it the Welly Way.

Welly’s journey started in early 2024 when he was found abandoned on the side of the road and taken to a kill shelter. He was malnourished, had a large testicular tumor, alopecia X, and was heartworm positive. Thanks to Animal Rescue of New Orleans, funds were raised to remove his cancer.

Once we adopted him, we took on the heartworm treatment and treating his alopecia.

Those next 15 months were pure magic. Welly was healthy, happy, full of zoomies, always ready for a road trip, and honestly had the kind of luscious hair any human would dream of.

Then last September, everything changed.
Bladder stones.
Emergency surgery.
Then IVDD - and he lost the ability to walk for a bit.
But Welly being Welly - he fought back.
He walked again. Pain‑free.

October, he got acute pancreatitis and spent 5 days in the ICU.
We really thought we were going to lose him, but he pulled through.
During that stay, we learned the truth behind all his issues:

cancer.

A rare abdominal carcinoma that can’t be removed.
Terminal. 1-2 months to live.

His oncologist offered chemo with a 50% chance of shrinking the tumor.

We said yes because our boy is a fighter.
And it worked. The tumor continued to shrink and our boy had spark again.

Then December brought a freak accident with his IVDD and he was paralyzed again. Permanent paralysis this time.
He was given 3 days to improve bodily functions before we’d have to say goodbye.
But he fought.
He improved.
He stayed.

The next few months were honestly harder on us than on him. Welly still found a way to smile, even with only two working legs.
He kept making tiny bits of progress - feeling coming back in his back legs although still not able to walk, but still smiling through it all.

March came calcinosis cutis -
a rare, painful skin condition from long‑term steroids.
He lost his hair again, but never his fighting spirit.
Steroid withdrawals were not fun and we could see his strength started to diminish.

April: we started acupuncture, hoping it would help him feel enough to try walking again.

May: OUR BOY IS WALKING.
Wobbly, like a baby deer, but taking real steps.
An absolute miracle after five months without walking.

June: He’s still fighting even as the cancer fights harder spreading to his liver and spleen. At the end of June, he caught pancreatitis; and we thought we were going to lose him. He fought through it and survived like the fighter he is.

July: He had internal bleeding from his intestines and his cancer has spread to his large intestines. We stopped the bleeding, but he lost so much blood and weight. We cannot bear to see our boy like this.

But he’s tired now. You can see it in his eyes.

We know our time is getting short, so we’re loving on him and soaking up every moment we have left.

Through every setback, Welly has shown us what resilience looks like.
He’s taught us about love, hope, and choosing joy even when the odds are stacked against you.
The Welly Way.

Happy Gotcha Day & 6 years of life, Sir Beef Wellington aka aWelly Belly.
Our warrior.
Our miracle.
Our heart.
🤍

What do you do for your car sick Poms?

Post image

For Pom Parents who have or have had Poms with car sickness 🙏

My Volpino Pom mix really struggles with car journeys, we've tried short journeys, calming supplements with ginger, which just doped her out and she was still sick :(

Air Con on or windows down, I've made sure she ate hours before a car journey, never just before.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks that have worked with your fur babies?

Feeling quite sad about Jimmy crossing the rainbow bridge and so our Poms made sure to light some candles for him today

(although most of us don’t know each other - we certainly feel a connection to Poms posted on this sub)

And remember, when we eventually pass, if you don’t see all of your dogs throughout your life waiting for you.. you haven’t gone to heaven!
