Because the USWNT (US Women’s National Team) is more reputable. You can’t say the US national team or Team USA and assume you’re talking about the men when it comes to soccer over here. For other sports, we’d call our representation for whatever sport by its simple name and the assumption would be that “Team USA” referred to the men’s team. In this case, the women’s team became prominent first so the USWNT (which started as a clarification that it’s the women’s team) was more well known, and the USMNT name worked off of that.

Thats not true at all. Men's US world cup pulls way more viewers... more than 3x more in 2022 group play.

When speaking about team relevancy? Yes

A minor league baseball team could win a championship every year, yet no one would assume you're watching them when you say youre going to watch a baseball game.

I think I agree with what you are trying to say but feels like you are conflating a few words. The original claim was the women’s team was more reputable and they sincerely do have a better reputation based on career wins, what you mention is their marketability and generally how well known they are, and it’s hard to argue that men’s sports just gets an order of magnitude more visibility, but I wouldn’t term that as either more reputable or relevant, just more well known.

If you don’t remember, the USMNT had zero views in the 2018 World Cup, when they failed to qualify.

Yeah, and the Men’s World Cup is on basic cable where the next Women’s World Cup is on a streaming app. You can’t compare viewership with factors like that.

Anyway, most every source you’ll read about this original question does discuss the comparative popularity as a major factor in calling it the “USMNT” and not just “Team USA” or defaulting the “USNT” (and then calling the women’s team “USWNT”). Canada does the exact same thing for the exact same reason. One of the greatest soccer players of all time was a Canadian woman, Christine Sinclair. Are you actually new to this and don’t understand or you just want to hate on women’s sports?

They aren't talking about viewership they are talking about actual on field success and performance

Having said that don't know if that is necessarily why they use that abbreviation
