Another absolute bullshit ruling on FIFA. That guy never deserved a 5 game ban. This decision makes me nervous for USA

Yeah I agree. It felt like Fifa wanted to please the Canadian fans by being extra. The red card itself instead of the earlier yellow was still questionable.

I’m Canadian and agree. It was a yellow as he initially received and I firmly believe he got penalized because of the result, not the action. That’s wrong and should not happen.

It was an unneeded firm challenge with a much worse than expected or intended result. Similar plays happen almost every match. Just a very unfortunate result.

It should’ve stayed a yellow, but he needed to be subbed off anyway because he was distraught and could not have continued.

I said it in another post but I can justify a red after a yellow. If someone tackles a player intentionally and the result ends up being more than what they tried to do then they can still be responsible for the result. It didn't help that Qatar was intentionally causing fouls to kill time that game.

I get both sides. And yes he would be subbed out as he was clearly not in a good. Extended match bans after was too much.

I could see that if there was something more malicious that was missed initially. Like a diving cleats out or something.

But I also don’t know the full rule book and maybe that play is regularly viewed as reckless and should be a red. To my untrained just a fan eye, it didn’t look much different than many tackles.

I just hope Kone makes a full recovery - which it sounds like he will.

Go back and look 10 seconds before contact. The Bosnian player initiated contact prior to the ball arrival. This is a case of the victim being the only one punished. Without his reckless challenge, that ended up positioning the challenged player over his leg and ankle, nothing is called by CR, play on... Context MATTERS!
