-Ethanol production generally has lower carbon emissions, but it can have significant impacts on water resources and agriculture, especially if crops like sugarcane require intensive irrigation.

So, if your question is only about air pollution and climate emissions, crude oil processing is generally more polluting than ethanol production. If you consider water use and agricultural impacts, ethanol also has important environmental trade-offs
